Penang CM urges residents to fly Jalur Gemilang with pride
GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has encouraged Penangites to proudly fly the Jalur Gemilang in celebration of National Month, describing it as a representation of Malaysia's sovereignty, unity, and national pride. He reiterated Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's appeal for all Malaysians, irrespective of race, background, or political stance, to display the flag at homes, offices, and businesses as a gesture of patriotism. 'The colours of the Jalur Gemilang embody the dignity of our nation, the history of our struggle, and the enduring spirit of independence,' Chow said during the launch of the Penang-level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign. 'Respecting the flag means preserving harmony, rejecting divisive prejudice, upholding integrity and justice, and being responsible, progressive citizens,' he added. Also present at the event were Penang state legislative assembly speaker Datuk Seri Law Choo Kiang and state secretary Datuk Seri Zulkifli Long. New road project in Kapit brings relief to longhouse families
KUALA LUMPUR: The construction of a new road linking Nanga Serau in Song to Nanga Seranau in Kapit, Sarawak, has been welcomed by hundreds of longhouse families who have depended solely on river transport for decades. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for including the project in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). He described it as a crucial development for Kapit's residents, stating, 'Currently, hundreds of longhouse families residing on the left bank of Sungai Batang Rajang depend entirely on the river route to travel to and from Kapit town.' The project, part of a nationwide plan to build and upgrade 2,800 kilometres of rural roads under the 13MP (2026–2030), will also include a bridge across the Batang Rajang near Nanga Yong. This bridge will directly link the river's left bank to Kapit town, significantly improving accessibility. Nanta, who is also Kapit's MP, highlighted the hardships faced by the community, saying, 'This announcement brings renewed hope and motivation to continue advocating for development and equal access in Sarawak's interior.' He added that the project demonstrates the government's commitment to rural communities. Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir stressed the need for innovation in Malaysia's higher education sector to align with the 13MP's goals. He urged stakeholders to collaborate, stating, 'We need institutions that are not only functional but capable of driving change through bold decisions and visionary leadership.' - Bernama

Malaysia's 13MP to boost high-value growth, sustain trade surplus
KUALA LUMPUR: The government expects Malaysia's trade surplus to remain robust under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), driven by high-value industries and economic diversification, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. He noted that while imports will stay high to meet development needs, Malaysia's long-standing trade surplus and current account surplus position the economy for stability. 'The trade balance is always in our favour. By developing new industries and investing in high-value sectors, we can increase output and sustain our surplus,' he said after appearing on Bernama TV's 'Ruang Bicara' programme. Amir Hamzah stressed that 13MP aims to enhance competitiveness through structural shifts into AI, digitalisation, and green technology. 'If we stagnate, others will overtake us. Economic complexity will create high-skilled jobs, raise wages, and maintain our edge,' he added. On trade policy, he advocated pragmatism, urging a move away from outdated strategies. 'We must adapt. Past reliance on foreign labour for low-cost production is no longer viable. By upskilling locals and adopting technology, we can reduce dependency on foreign workers,' he explained. Despite global uncertainties, Malaysia's outlook remains positive, with the IMF revising GDP growth forecasts to 4.5%. 'This reflects confidence in our direction,' he said, highlighting 13MP's monitoring mechanisms to ensure effective execution. Projections show Malaysia's trade surplus hitting RM116.3 billion by 2030, with exports growing at 5.8% annually from 2026. - Bernama
