Performance artist MR Vishnuprasad's ‘Footnotes' explores climate change and its impact on Kochi's coastal regions

The Hindu31-07-2025
MR Vishnuprasad sits atop a column, at the central gallery space at Durbar Hall, while his audience gathers around him in a semicircle. He is set to present 'Footnotes', a performance based on tidal flooding in Kochi. There are no props in sight, other than a visual of a graph projected on the wall behind him, and no fanfare.
How is a performance artist going to tackle a complex environmental issue in a gallery setting? As Vishnuprasad begins his narration, the questions begin to dissolve. He opens the piece by recounting a recurring nightmare — of everyday household objects floating about him. Broaching the issue gently, he builds a steady narrative around tidal flooding, bringing fact, data and real voices to the fore.
'It is the daily reality of people living in Kochi's coastal areas — how they deal with the quiet terror of the rising waters that refuse to leave their homes and how their lives now are defined by these tidal surges,' says Vishnuprasad, whose inquiry into climate change — climate injustices and ecological grief led him to the project.
He visited the regions in Kochi plagued by saline water intrusion to understand and experience it first hand. No longer a seasonal phenomenon, tidal flooding has forced several families in Kochi's coastal belt, including Vypin, Edavanakkad, Enikkara, Edakochi, and Thanthonithuruth, to abandon their homes. Though local collectives such as the Edakochi Janakeeya Samithi have been fighting for the cause, their plight continues.
Vishnuprasad gathered video footage of flooded homes from the archives of the Edakochi Janakeeya Samithi, and collaborating with video artist Akarsh Karunakaran, combined the footage with poetry, narrative text and live speech by residents of Edakochi to create his 'lecture performance'. 'I wanted real voices to be represented. It is their reality,' he adds.
'Footnotes' has been conceived as a lecture performance, a relatively new form of performance art combining elements of a traditional lecture with that of performance art. The piece offers space for the scientific and the artistic worlds to meet, where fact blends with creative expression. Vishnuprasad's own journey has been through these seemingly disparate worlds. With a masters in Environmental Science, and a background studying hydro geology, Vishnuprasad has worked with several organisations including the Centre for Environment Education. A poet and writer as well, he later took to the arts, especially intrigued by the spontaneity and thrill of performance art. He earned a PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies from JNU, Delhi and since then, has been exploring the various possibilities of the genre. After his debut Malayalam novel Matthias published earlier this year, Vishnuprasad is working on his next.
'Footnotes' will be an ongoing project, says Vishnuprasad, where he would continue his engagement with the issue. 'It is not just a documentation, but a response to the changing realities.'

Rishab Shetty, Kichcha Sudeep condemn overnight razing of Vishnuvardhan's memorial: An explainer on the controversy

Kannada star Vishnuvardhan, who also acted in a few Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi movies, died at age 59 on 30 December 2009. The 'Sahasa Simha' died of a heart attack at the King's Court Hotel in Mysore. His last rites were performed with full state honours at Abhiman Studio in Bengaluru. On Saturday, fans woke up to the shocking news that a structure at his memorial had been razed on Thursday, with fans protesting at the studios on Friday. Vishnuvardhan was a popular actor in South Indian, particularly Kannada cinema. Vishnuvardhan's grave site razed TNIE reported that the land in Abhiman Studios once belonged to the late Kannada actor Balakrishna. However, the current owner reportedly razed the structure at the memorial overnight with permission from the court and under police protection. Film director Ravi Srivathsa, who recorded a video of the demolished structure, was quoted as saying, 'This is my god's (Vishnuvardhan) place, and it has been destroyed. The man who gave jobs and shelter to many has been treated this way.' Balakrishna's daughter Geeta Bali alleged, 'I learnt about it through the media and was shocked. My elder brother, Ganesh, was murdered last year. The person behind his murder is also involved in the demolition. Politicians are also involved.' The memorial at Abhiman Studios included an 8-foot statue of Vishnuvardhan, which is now the bone of contention between the new owners and fans. Despite long-standing demand to preserve the site, the demolition has frustrated fans who called out the government, police, and the Film Chamber. According to a OneIndia report, a new memorial spread across 2.75 acres in Mysuru has been in development since 2020, with plans to showcase Vishnuvardhan's personal belongings. Kichcha Sudeep, Rishab Shetty condemn the razing of memorial Kannada star Rishab Shetty on Saturday evening condemned the razing of Vishnuvardhan's memorial overnight. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in Kannada, 'What has happened in the case of Vishnuvardhan sir's memorial is condemnable. It has deeply hurt every fan who worships him wholeheartedly. In the case of a great actor of the state, such incidents are happening again and again, which is an insult to his personality and service to the arts. #VishnuSir #VishnuVardhan #Injustice #VishnuVardhanSmaraka.' Kichcha Sudeep also condemned the move and wrote in a long note on X, 'Sahasa Simha Vishnuvardhan represents an unending admiration and respect. The night before last, the destruction of his memorial feels as painful and distressing as if a temple of a god we have believed in and revered for years was shattered.' He also added that many, including him, had asked authorities if they needed money to maintain the structure when the case was in the High Court. 'We were ready for everything, I myself said so. Yet, the government didn't pay attention to this, or perhaps, without providing a proper explanation to the court, without burying it in the ground, they said the memorial at the cremation site isn't valid since there's already a memorial in Mysore,' he added. Sudeep also added that he will go to court, if need be, to appeal to the individual who owns the land to preserve at least a small portion of where Vishnuvardhan's memorial once stood. 'I am speaking as a fan of Vishnuvardhan, not as Kichcha. The pain is immense,' wrote Sudeep. The actor also posted a video reiterating the same in a video and questioning the move to demolish the memorial, and reiterating that he will stand up against it. Dhruva Sarja said Vishnuvardhan does not need a memorial to immortalise him, but condemned the manner in which it was razed, writing, 'There is no death for a true achiever, nor for art... Vishnu Appaji is immortal... Why does a person who has built a temple in the hearts of crores of Kannadigas need a memorial? Yet, in this land, such an insult to such an achiever is not right. It causes immense pain to the heart. There are many questions to ask upon hearing this, but as a Kannadiga and an artist, in this moment, I stand honestly with the fans of Vishnu Sir. I am waiting for your next move. Jai Kannadambe, Vishnu Dada is immortal…' Vishnuvardhan's wife, Bharathi, and their two daughters, Keerthi and Chandana, are reportedly yet to comment on the controversy.

My heart is filled with anger at the injustice of it all. I have known you for almost three decades, and in all that time you have been a true friend – one of the kindest and most genuine people I have met in our industry. Though we worked together in only one film, the shows we did and the time we spent together were enough for me to understand your character and to treasure our friendship." Rahman, who is also the co-brother of music director A R Rahman, then went on to say, "During those shows, I saw firsthand how much you cared for others – whether it was fellow actors, especially newcomers, the crew, organisers, or your fans. I still remember you quietly buying medicines for crew members who were unwell, without expecting any thanks or recognition. You treated everyone with respect, regardless of their position. Those moments spoke volumes about the person you are." The actor then went on to comment on the current situation in which the actress finds herself. He wrote, "This current situation is nothing but utter nonsense. Meher and I are shocked and disgusted by the people behind this malicious act. It is clear to me that this is a deliberate attempt to tarnish your name and stop you from being elected as the President of the Malayalam Artists' Association. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Such dirty games are common in politics, but I never expected to see them in our film industry." Seeking her forgiveness for not reaching out to her sooner, Rahman said he was unable to reach out, first because of food poisoning and then as he was mourning the loss of his dear friend, Shanavas. "My words are meant for you, but I also want the public to know where I stand. I'm aware that some media outlets may twist my words, but I honestly don't care," the actor wrote. Urging the actress not to lose heart, actor Rahman said, "Shwetha, please don't let this break your spirit. I know how hard you have worked to get where you are today – without anyone's help, through sheer determination and strength. You are stronger than this storm, and those who have tried to harm you will one day face the consequences of their actions. I have no doubt that you will make an excellent president of the Malayalam Artists' Association, and I stand with you in full support. "
