Tunnock's teacakes honoured in new song by Glasgow musician

Glasgow Times11-05-2025

Award-nominated musician Kenneth I MacKenzie has supported huge artists like The Waterboys during his time in a Glasgow pipe band and even wrote a song about Oor Willie.
Now, the award-nominated trad music fanatic has released a song dedicated to Scotland's best-known biscuits and cakes - Tunnock's.
The song, Tunnock's The Legend, was inspired by 'everyone having cupboards full of the stuff' and a chance meeting with Boyd Tunnock, the idea then "snowballed" from there.

Speaking about the song's inspiration, Kenneth, 63, said, "I had the idea years ago and never did much with it.
"I met Mr Tunnock a few years ago at a business-type lunch, and I bounced the song off him.
"He thought it sounded like a great idea, and it just 'snowballed' from there.
"He's quite a character, actually."

He "tried to write a verse for every product" in the song and used it as a theme throughout.
However, the Glasgow Times always asks the difficult questions, and we got Kenneth to pick his favourite.
He said: "I just discovered it last night... I've just decided the Caramel Log is my favourite.
"It really is something else, you know."

Kenneth's career has seen him play all around the world, and he's graced the Barrowland Ballroom to support The Waterboys as part of The City of Glasgow Pipe Band.
Speaking about that time, Kenneth said: "What an experience that was! Oh, it was great fun."
The song was produced by musical arranger and musician Will Marshall, who arranged Kenneth's last album.
Will is also the musical director for the pantomime season at the Eden Court Theatre and has started writing film scores.

Kenneth, who stays in Scotstoun, said: "I'm in the Park quite often on Thursdays for the session.
"I've got a lot of connections up north and up in the West Coast. Ardnamurchan is like a second home, and I write and sing about it a lot.
"That's where the passion for traditional music comes from."
He's no stranger to honouring Scottish icons with his music, having put together a tune about Oor Willie - Scotland's Oldest Wee Boy - which was produced by Stuart 'Woody' Wood from the Bay City Rollers.

Kenneth also keeps a secret with the song, he explained: "I've brought in a well-known Scottish singer, but no one has revealed their name yet.
"So, it's top secret adds to the mystique of the whole thing.
"They're very well known in the Scottish folk scene and said 'I'm going to do it, but don't tell anybody it's me'."
Producer, Will Marshall (left) and Kenneth Mackenzie (right) (Image: Supplied) Tunnock's director, Fergus Loudon, said: "Without exception, we all thought Kenny's song was very catchy.
"We don't have any use for it at the moment, but we'll certainly keep it on file for any future marketing initiatives we are running."
The song was first aired by Andy Hood on Celtic Music Radio at the start of Celtic Connections this year and has been played many times since.
It's now available on Spotify here.

Caitríona Balfe addresses the end of Outlander in amazing tribute

Outlander's Caitríona Balfe paid tribute to the show Outlander star Caitríona Balfe has expressed her deep appreciation for the Starz historical drama during a recent virtual gathering, reports the Scottish Daily Express. The Irish actress, who portrays Claire Fraser, reflected on the show's achievements and extended her gratitude towards the team behind it. ‌ Balfe remarked: "I think we've been so spoiled to have so many years of the show doing so well and being promoted so well. ‌ "Every single year, Starz have been so amazing and they've put these massive billboards up and it's almost like you start to get used to it, until you realise this may never happen again and it's a really amazing thing that we've been a part of." She also shared her best wishes with the cast of the upcoming prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood: "And I hope you guys get to have the same experiences for a very long time because it's really very special and it's not to be taken for granted." ‌ Balfe was speaking at The Gathering, an online event hosted by Starz in celebration of Outlander Day on June 1, which marks the publication date of the first book in Diana Gabaldon's acclaimed series. The event was organised by Starz to offer a sneak peek at the anticipated prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood, bringing together actors from both the original and upcoming series to discuss what fans can expect. ‌ Actress Harriet Slater, who portrays Ellen MacKenzie in Blood of My Blood, expressed her admiration following Balfe's tribute: "I just want to say congratulations because you've made such an incredible show, and like you said, it's so rare for a show to go on that long these days. "I feel like things are cancelled left, right and centre, so it's amazing that you've made this and it's so loved and I feel very proud to be joining, and we've got some big boots to fill." ‌ Sam Heughan, famed for his role as Jamie Fraser, also offered his commendations to the cast of Blood of My Blood: "We're actually going to be the biggest fans of your show. "Honestly, I can't wait to see all the younger versions of ourselves or the characters we love." He continued: "A big thank you to our showrunners and writers, Diana Gabaldon who... she was the beginning of all this stuff. Good luck and we're rooting for you." ‌ Outlander: Blood of My Blood is set to captivate audiences with a 10-episode run, delving into the romantic histories of Claire and Jamie's parents. Echoing its predecessor Outlander, the spin-off will span various time periods, showcasing Claire's parents' love story during World War One and the fervent relationship of Jamie's parents in 17th century Scotland. ‌ While Blood of My Blood isn't directly adapted from any of Gabaldon's novels, it draws upon the Outlander canon through anecdotes Jamie and Claire have recounted about their forebears. The absence of original material has allowed the scriptwriters greater creative freedom to experiment with the narrative and fill in some blanks, especially concerning Claire's parents Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield). Claire was only aware that her parents perished in a car accident, but it appears that Blood of My Blood will provide a definitive resolution to their destiny.

Presenter Danny Campbell to run 10k race in Crocs in memory of brother

His younger brother Duncan died in 2024 after a long battle with cancer. Before his death, Duncan Campbell spoke about his mental health in a book called The Suicide Notes and at an Edinburgh Fringe show of the same name. Danny Campbell said the race will be deeply personal, and funds raised will go to the Mental Health Foundation. He said: 'There were days where I was really overwhelmed, anxious, and felt like I was failing at everything – being a dad, running a business, keeping it together. Danny Campbell will take on the 10k in his Crocs (Image: HOKO Design/PA) 'My brother was honest about his own struggles, and that has been an inspiration and, in many ways, it's changed my life. 'Running in Crocs might sound daft, but it's about showing up exactly as you are and marching to the beat of your own drum. That's what he taught me.' Known for their signature aesthetic rather than as running shoes, the Crocs are likely to make the 10k even harder for Campbell. The 34-year-old, who founded Glasgow-based HOKO Design in 2019, has become well-known in Scotland through his architectural work, as well as for his TV presenting. Behind the scenes however, he has had to face the loss of his brother, while growing a business and raising his three young sons. READ MORE: The presenter said: 'When Duncan died, everything changed. He was so young. He was kind, funny, and smart. He was always the first to ask how I was doing. 'If Duncan had decided to end his life, we would have lost those final special years together. I'm grateful we had that time. 'I believe we had that time because he opened up. Hopefully by running a very slow 10k in squishy shoes, I can encourage others to share their problems with those close to them.' Danny Campbell hopes he will help break down stigma around mental health (Image: HOKO Design/PA) The Glasgow Men's 10k starts at the Riverside Museum and finishes at Glasgow Green, and is designed to get men of all ages moving and talking – with a focus on mental health. Campbell added: 'I read all the comments online about my Crocs, and I think it's a great indicator of why people don't open up. 'I find the online abuse quite funny, but if you take a step back, it shows that if you do anything remotely different from the norm, people want to knock you down. 'We lose too many good people because they don't feel they can talk. If doing something a bit silly gets even one person to open up, that's a win. 'An event like this is brilliant because it brings men together and will hopefully help remove the stigma around mental health. Maybe it'll remove the stigma around wearing Crocs too.' Julie Cameron, associate director for Scotland at the Mental Health Foundation, said: 'We're incredibly grateful to Danny for taking on this challenge, raising both awareness and vital funds for the Mental Health Foundation. 'His message encouraging people, especially men, to talk about their struggles and seek support is more important than ever. 'While awareness has grown, stigma still holds many back from opening up about their struggles. 'Normalising conversations around mental health is crucial, and if an architect running a 10k in Crocs sparks those discussions, that's a win.'
