ABU DHABI (WAM)Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, President of the UAE Sailing and Rowing Federation, has awarded the winners of the Abu Dhabi Grand Kingfish Championships 2025 at a ceremony held at Majlis Al Bateen in Abu Dhabi.The championships promoted traditional sport that embodies the UAE's maritime heritage, and carried a prize pool valued at more than Dh4.2 million.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan honoured sponsors and supporters of the event, and affirmed its significance and role in promoting the continued practice of maritime heritage sports.

11 Aug 2025 20:10 ULAANBAATAR (WAM)Two UAE endurance riders Sheikh Khalifa Al Hamed and Issa Al Khiyari concluded their historic participation in the Mongol Derby endurance race by tying for first place with American rider Michael Pollard and British rider Anna world's greatest equine adventure race, covering a distance of 1,000 km, was held over eight days from 7:00am to 7:00pm, making it the longest in the world for this distance. It began on August 4 and will culminate with the awards ceremony on Khalifa Al Hamed stated that reaching the finish line with his fellow rider Issa Al Khiyari was an achievement in itself, given the extremely challenging conditions and great obstacles. These included varied terrains, mountain passes, green valleys, rolling hills, plains, sand dunes, and explained that they were determined to continue the race until the end to demonstrate the capabilities of Emiratis in facing challenges, and not to withdraw from such a difficult competition despite the circumstances during the dozens of riders withdrew at various stages due to exhaustion and difficulties in handling the Mongolian horses, with the rest of the participants failing to reach the finish line after eight Khalifa Al Hamed revealed that the daunting challenge they faced was handling the unfamiliar Mongolian horses—unlike other races where the rider competes with their own horse. In addition, staying on horseback for about 12 hours a day made simply reaching the finish line a major accomplishment in their first-ever participation. The Mongol Derby is an equestrian endurance race and world's longest horse race. It extends 1,000 kilometres through the Mongolian Steppe.

Strong performances by young rowers Hamad Amer Al Shamsi finished fourth in the men's U-19 singles and fourth in the men's U-19 doubles, partnering with Hamad Abdullah Al Hosani. Salem Ali Al Mansoori finished fifth in the boys' U-16 singles, a category introduced for the first time in Asian championships, while Ahmed Khamees Al Hammadi placed ninth in the men's singles. In the men's doubles, Hamad Saeed Al Matroushi and Khamees Ghanem Al Shamsi finished sixth. Federation applauds team's progress Mohammed Abdullah Al Obaidli, Secretary-General of the UAE Sailing and Rowing Federation, lauded the players' efforts and emphasised the event's importance in preparing athletes for worldwide contests, such as the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

His Excellency Hamid Al Shamsi gave Mr Shroff a tour of the club's modern sailing team headquarters, which serves as an international training centre, as well as the club's facilities including the hotel, gym, and swimming pool. The chairman expressed his gratitude to the Asian Sailing Federation president for the visit, also thanking the UAE Sailing and Rowing Federation, led by Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, and the Sharjah Sports Council for their continuous support in advancing marine sports in the country. He affirmed that Al Hamriyah possesses all the capabilities to host the Asian Championship, citing the club's experience in organising major sports events such as the Al Hamriyah International Championship and the international modern sailing camp last season.
