Safoda renews cooperation with Jica

PAPAR: The Sabah Forestry Development Authority (Safoda) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) have renewed their commitment to sustainable forest management via an inaugural Safoda-Jica Friendship Day held at Safoda Eco-Forest Park, Kinarut, here, recently. Safoda Chairman Datuk Hamild @ Hamid Awang said the landmark event marks the renewal of a joint commitment Safoda-Jica to conserve 198 hectares of forest land within the Safoda Forest Reserve – a strategic and symbolic step toward a greener Sabah and demonstrating a tangible commitment to reforestation and ecosystem protection.
Advertisement He said the event was held also to celebrate 60 years of Japanese cooperation in Borneo. He said it brought together a diverse and passionate group of government agencies, international partners, educators, students and local communities united by a shared vision of creating a sustainable future through the preservation and responsible management of the Safoda Forest Reserve. PENAMPANG: The district has welcomed the newly launched The Majulan Hotel at ITCC, Penampang, to boost Sabah's tourism industry, especially ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026). Its Chief Executive Officer, Alexander Hugo Malakun, said the hotel aims to enhance its services and attract both domestic and international tourists to stay at the newest hotel landmark in the area. Advertisement He expressed optimism that the hotel can cater to both tourists' and locals' needs, as ITCC offers a shopping mall and complementary facilities to enhance visitors' experiences. 'Looking ahead, Majulan Hotel will help draw more visitors to Sabah in the coming year. It features 163 rooms, a swimming pool, gym, café, restaurant, rooftop viewing deck, and several event spaces designed to cater to both leisure and business travellers. 'Furthermore, the hotel is part of an integrated development with ITCC, where many activities for locals such as weddings, festivals, cultural events, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs take place. "Our Chairman, Datuk Seri Clarence Bongkos Malakun, also provides free Kadazan language classes weekly. We hope these initiatives will spill over to benefit the hotel and attract more tourists,' Alexander said. He made these remarks to reporters after Sabah's Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, officially launched the grand opening of The Majulan Hotel at ITCC Penampang on Wednesday. Tun Musa signed a plaque to mark the official opening of the new hotel. Guthrie and Gamuda to develop 1.2GW solar power in Malaysia

Ringgit Rises Against Major Currencies, Eases Vs US Dollar
WORLD By Zufazlin Baharuddin KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The ringgit appreciated against most major currencies but eased slightly against the greenback at the close on Wednesday amid cautious market sentiments ahead of the release of the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes later tonight. At 6 pm, the local note dipped to 4.2250/2290 against the US dollar from yesterday's close of 4.2215/2255. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that apart from the minutes, comments by senior US central bank officials will also come into focus after the release of the FOMC details. 'Markets are anxious about whether the US Federal Reserve (Fed) will deliver a 25 basis points interest rate cut in the upcoming FOMC meeting,' he told Bernama. Afzanizam said last week's US consumer price index and producer price index dynamics suggested that the Fed might continue to focus on inflation, but noted that the weak labour market warranted additional monetary stimulus. In addition, the market sentiment will stay guarded ahead of policy signals from the Fed's Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium later this week. At the close, the ringgit settled mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. It gained versus the euro to 4.9196/9242 from 4.9307/9354 yesterday and inched up against the British pound to 5.7033/7087 from 5.7066/7120, but dropped vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8648/8677 from 2.8572/8601. The ringgit also traded mostly higher against other ASEAN currencies. It gained versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2864/2898 from 3.2901/2935 at Tuesday's close, strengthened against the Thai baht to 12.9756/9935 from 12.9848/13.0027 and inched up vis-à-vis the Indonesian rupiah to 259.6/260.0 from 259.8/260.2. However, it slid against the Philippine peso to 7.41/7.42 from 7.39/7.40 yesterday.
