Women ministry steps in with aid and counselling for UPSI crash victims' families
PUTRAJAYA, June 10 — The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) will provide RM1,000 each in immediate aid to 10 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) warded in the intensive care units of two hospitals in Perak.
Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the donations are through Yayasan Kebajikan Negara under the 'Skim Pemberian Ehsan Kepada Keluarga Mangsa'.
She said her deputy, Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad, will visit the affected students on her behalf.
'Eight students are being treated at Taiping Hospital, while two are in Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, Ipoh,' she told reporters after officiating the Women Seminar 2025 'EmpowerHER: Engage Energise Elevate', here today.
Nancy said the ministry will also look into aid and support for the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
'I think the families need time to grieve as well. It is not just about giving money. What they need most right now is emotional support,' she said, adding that the ministry is ready to offer the services of professional counsellors.
'But we cannot simply show up immediately, people are still devastated,' she said.
The tragic crash occurred between 12.30 am and 1 am yesterday on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, when a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jertih to Tanjung Malim overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza.
The accident claimed the lives of 15 students and left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant, and the Alza's driver and three passengers. — Bernama

Gerik bus crash: Counselling team waiting for families, says Nancy
KUALA LUMPUR: The Women, Family, and Community Development Ministry is allowing students and families affected by the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) bus tragedy time to become emotionally ready before commencing counselling sessions. Although the counselling team is prepared to start anytime, many families are still waiting for their loved ones to recover in the Intensive Care Unit and wards, said Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. "We are ready, but we also have to consider the readiness of the families as we don't want to disturb their emotions right now. "We also received a report that some counselling students from UPSI are using this opportunity to carry out practical counselling for their friends, as some affected students feel more comfortable talking to their peers. "Through this incident, UPSI counselling students can provide encouragement and positive talk while gaining practical knowledge," she said. On June 9, 15 UPSI students were killed in the crash involving a bus and a multi-purpose vehicle in Banun, near Tasik Banding, approximately 57 kilometres from Gerik, Perak. Nancy spoke to reporters after officiating the Wanita Gig and Business In Technology (Wanita GIG@BIT) programme on Thursday (June 12). The programme is an initiative by the Women Development Department (JWP) to open up digital economic opportunities for women, reduce the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), while supporting more inclusive national development. "We have many economic empowerment programmes, and Wanita GIG@BIT is one of them. We will have more programmes involving women in income generation while helping them acquire skills. "There are 350 participants this year, with a focus on reskilling and upskilling in the latest technologies, including artificial intelligence, for women who want to lead in entrepreneurship," she said. Throughout this year, the JPW has planned several other programmes with strategic partners, including eKelas Usahawan @JPW, STEM Graduate Empowerment into the Workforce Programme, Digital Photography and Video Workshops, as well as Basic Generative AI and Cybersecurity Awareness Programme in collaboration with Maxis Berhad, Canon Marketing Malaysia, Mereka Academy, and the International Federation of Women and Commerce Industries Malaysia (IWFCIM). The ministry hopes Wanita GIG@BIT will increase the participation rate of the female labour force in the digital field and further empower women in the country.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Malaysia announced that this International Union for Conservation of Nature Green List status, awarded in May to the country's first terrestrial protected area, serves as a model for inclusive and practical conservation. WWF-Malaysia's Elyrice Alim, site mentor for PSFR's Green List journey, emphasized that the IUCN Green List is more than just a label—it reflects a well-managed protected area grounded in strong relationships with local communities, rights-holders, and civil society. "What makes Pin Supu Forest Reserve truly special is the community's active involvement from the beginning, including in co-developing the first management plan," she said. WWF-Malaysia Chief Executive Officer Sophia Lim echoed this sentiment, stating that the IUCN Green List is a testament to the commitment to conserving biodiversity while supporting economic growth and social inclusion. She highlighted the partnership between the Sabah Forestry Department and KOPEL as inspiring, representing over two decades of dedicated, community-driven conservation. KOPEL is a local community cooperative that promotes sustainable livelihoods through ecotourism and conservation. "We hope to see more protected and conserved areas across Malaysia achieve this global standard," Lim said, adding that this milestone highlights the success of local collaboration and places this forest reserve alongside some of the world's best-managed Protected Areas. Building on this momentum, Tun Mustapha Park (TMP)—one of Sabah's iconic marine protected areas, managed by Sabah Parks—is now preparing for its IUCN Green List evaluation. This process involves assessing how well the park is managed and protected to meet international standards, reflecting Sabah's ongoing, collective commitment to conservation excellence. Lim remarked that the recognition of Pin Supu Forest Reserve on the IUCN Green List marks a landmark moment for conservation in Sabah and Malaysia, made possible through the dedication of multiple partners. As the implementing partner of the IUCN Green List programme in Malaysia, WWF-Malaysia supports nationwide promotion, coordination, and technical facilitation of the Green List process, aiding current and future efforts by protected areas working towards this recognition. Prior to this, the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area (SIMCA) also received its accreditation in May 2022. PSFR's inclusion on the list demonstrates its exemplary commitment to biodiversity conservation, effective management, and inclusive, community-based approaches. Located in the middle of the Lower Kinabatangan floodplain in Sabah's Kinabatangan District, Pin Supu Forest Reserve spans 4,696 hectares, featuring diverse lowland forest types, oxbow lakes, and a complex limestone karst system of caves. It plays a vital role in maintaining connectivity within the broader Lower Kinabatangan floodplain ecosystem. It is currently the only forest area in Sabah managed in partnership with a local community, where meaningful participation is recognised as a key priority.
