KPWKM's 2025 Kembara Kasih Roadshow reaches over 10,000 Sabahans across six districts
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Joachim Gunsalam (fourth right) performs the gimmick for the Kembara Kasih closing ceremony in Tawau last Saturday TAWAU (May 28): The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development's (KPWKM) 2025 Kembara Kasih roadshow wrapped up in Tawau on May 24 after covering nearly 400 kilometres and making stops across six districts in Sabah. The outreach programme, which began in Tuaran on May 16, successfully reached and benefitted over 10,000 residents. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the initiative brought together 34 programmes and services that were delivered at various roadshow stops, offering direct assistance to communities in need. 'Kembara Kasih also included visits to 14 clients under the Social Welfare Department (JKM) and several families identified by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) along the route,' she said. 'We hope these visits help ease their burdens, offer encouragement, and inspire them to move forward and rebuild their lives.' The roadshow was divided into two zones: Zone 1 covered Tuaran, Papar and Penampang from May 16 to 18; while Zone 2 involved Lahad Datu, Kunak, and Tawau from May 22 to 24. Nancy highlighted that Kembara Kasih 2025 focused on five core pillars, namely empowering family institutions; advancing women's professionalism; enhancing community capacity and potential; strengthening community well-being; and promoting growth in the care sector. As part of family empowerment efforts, LPPKN organised several programmes, including a parenting character development forum in Penampang; a men's well-being programme at the Marine Police Force headquarters in Lahad Datu; and the Kasih Remaja@Kafeteen programme at SMK Sri Nangka in Tuaran. To support women's professional development, the Zero Tolerance for Violence programme organised by the Department of Women's Development (JPW) was held at the Papar Community Hall and drew more than 700 participants. Under the theme of enhancing community capacity, JKM conducted five initiatives, including the Intergenerational Mind Image programme and the launch of a new Senior Citizens Activity Centre (Pawe) in Benoni, Papar. KPWKM Commended For Leading Advocacy Against Sexual Harassment
TAWAU, May 25 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) has been commended for its proactive efforts nationwide in raising awareness about sexual harassment. Sabah Deputy Chief Minister II, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, said sexual harassment can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, age, race or religion, and is often perpetrated by someone close to the victim. 'Many victims remain silent due to social pressure or simply because they don't know where to seek help. They should take advantage of the Sexual Harassment Redress Tribunal (TAGS) introduced by KPWKM. It provides a fast and low-cost alternative for addressing sexual harassment complaints. 'We all share the responsibility of creating a safe environment and supporting victims in seeking justice,' he said at the closing ceremony of the KPWKM Kembara Kasih 2025 programme and the handing over of the anti-sexual harassment notice last night. Also present was KPWKM Deputy Secretary-General (Operations), Farah Adura Hamidi. Joachim expressed concern over the rising trend of such cases in Malaysia, with 788 cases reported last year compared to 522 in 2023. As of March this year, 214 cases have already been recorded, five of them in Sabah. He praised the impact of the KPWKM Kembara Kasih 2025 programme, which covered six districts across Sabah, starting in Tuaran on May 16, then moving through Papar, Penampang, Lahad Datu, Kunak and ending in Tawau. He said the initiative brought meaningful benefits to key target groups in Sabah, particularly women, children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities, through 34 programmes. 'Programmes like Ziarah Kasih, which deliver direct aid to clients of the Social Welfare Department and the National Population and Family Development Board, received strong support from the local community.

KPWKM urges collective action against child abuse cases

KUNAK (May 25): The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) has called for greater community involvement in protecting children from abuse and neglect, emphasising the need for a collective approach to ensure child safety. According to the minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, every level of society including parents, educators, the parent-teacher association (PTA) and local communities, plays a role in creating a safe environment for children. Speaking at the 'Kasih Kanak-Kanak Child Protection Advocacy Programme' at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Selamat Kunak, she stressed that child protection must be a shared responsibility. 'This initiative supports the government's commitment to preventing physical, emotional and sexual abuse, neglect and exploitation, as outlined under the Child Act 2001,' she said in her speech that was delivered by the ministry's deputy secretary general (operations) Farah Adura Hamidi. The Kasih Kanak-Kanak programme was rolled out nationwide in 2024, reaching schools in every state, including 10 in Sabah. It is an initiative under the 'Kembara Kasih KPWKM'. Building upon this success, the ministry now aims to expand the programme to 300 more schools to continue raising awareness and empowering children. Nancy said the ministry, through the Social Welfare Department, was deeply concerned about the growing number of abuse cases, which had been widely highlighted on social media. In Sabah alone, 1,181 child abuse and neglect cases were recorded in 2024. 'These figures are not just statistics – they represent real stories of trauma and injustice experienced by children who should have been protected and loved,' she said. The federal minister noted that in addition to physical harm, cases of emotional abuse and neglect were also on the rise, including children left without food or care, beaten, or verbally abused to the point of damaging their confidence and mental health. The programme also promotes awareness of reporting channels, including the Talian Kasih 15999 and WhatsApp line 019-261 5999, all out to offer immediate help for children in distress. 'We need everyone to be the eyes and ears of the community. 'Report abuse immediately – your action could save a child's life,' she urged.
