The latest group of surrendered cadres included two women who turned themselves in to senior police and CRPF officials, citing disillusionment with the Maoist ideology and harsh forest life.
"The number of Maoists, who surrendered under the Lon Varratu campaign of the Dantewada police, has crossed the 1,000-mark and this achievement reflects the far-sighted policies of the government, the continuous action of the security forces and the trust of the local communities," said Dantewada Superintendent of Police Gaurav Rai to news agency PTI.
"It is a symbol of the commitment of the government and administration to bring back the youth, who have strayed due to the hollow ideology of Maoists, to the mainstream," he added.
Among the surrendered militants, Chandranna alias Bursu Punem, 52, and Amit alias Hinga Barsa, 26, each carried Rs 8 lakh bounties. Both were divisional committee members involved in multiple attacks on security forces.
Two other significant surrenders included Aruna Lekam, 25, an area committee member with a Rs 5 lakh bounty, and Deva Kawasi, 22, a section commander with a Rs 3 lakh reward.
The remaining cadres carried varying bounties - one with Rs 2 lakh, a woman cadre with Rs 1 lakh, and three others with Rs 50,000 each.
"The 12 cadres, including two women, turned themselves in before senior police officials as well as those belonging to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) citing disappointment with growing differences within outlawed outfit, harsh forest life and hollow Maoist ideology," Rai added.

The surrendered individuals were also influenced by the rehabilitation drive 'Lon Varratu' and the state government's new surrender and rehabilitation policy.
The successful campaign has now seen a total of 1,005 Maoists surrender, including 249 with bounties on their heads.
The surrendered cadres under the Lon Varratu drive came from various districts including Sukma, Bijapur, and Narayanpur, apart from Dantewada.
Police records show that in 2024, a total of 792 Maoists had surrendered across the seven districts of the Bastar region, including Dantewada.

Citing Malegaon blast case verdict, Yogi accuses opposition of ‘shielding terrorists'

1 2 Lucknow: Accusing opposition parties of "implicating innocent Hindus" while shielding actual terrorists in reference to the recent clean chit to the accused of the Malegaon Blast, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday alleged that Congress and Samajwadi Party repeatedly conspired against nationalists and were, in the Malegaon case, questioning the credibility of the country's constitutional institutions. "Will Congress ever apologise to the nation for its misdeeds?" the CM asked while addressing a public meeting in Meerut. He further said that the politics of Congress and SP was long centred on casteism, communal riots, and appeasement of mafia. Calling their approach to terrorism "soft", the CM demanded a public apology from Congress, stating that its politics rooted in casteism, riots, and mafia appeasement deeply harmed the nation. The CM was in Meerut to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for development projects and participated in the bhoomi pujan of a Rs 2,517 crore Integrated Township project, spread across 295 hectares. The CM also provided financial assistance to young entrepreneurs, self-help groups, and housing scheme beneficiaries. Dedicating the township project to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the CM announced that its name would be 'Atal Shatabdi'. Located near the Rapid Rail corridor, this project aims to offer affordable and sustainable housing to residents of the National Capital Region. "The township will reshape Meerut's urban landscape with integrated residential, industrial, and commercial facilities, along with schools, technical institutes, and medical colleges. The project is expected to generate employment for lakhs and establish Meerut as a new hub of development," he said. Elaborating on the development in Meerut in recent years, the CM said that earlier known for its 'Chor Bazar' areas like Sotiganj, it was now gaining international recognition for its sports goods industry, thanks to initiatives like Rapid Rail, the 12-lane expressway, and the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme. The country's first sports university, named after Major Dhyan Chand, is coming up in Meerut, he said, while the country's longest expressway connecting Meerut to Prayagraj will be completed by the end of the year, reducing travel time to Lucknow to just six hours. He also announced the commencement of survey work for the Meerut–Haridwar expressway and the integration of divisional offices under one roof as key developmental initiatives and announced new development projects as well, including the reconstruction of the Inner Ring Road and a new Circuit House. He urged people to purchase indigenous products over foreign goods to stop national wealth "from flowing into anti-national activities". The CM also announced that on the occasion of Rakshabandhan, women would be able to travel for free in state transport buses from Aug 8 to 10. He credited the govt's zero-tolerance policy for ridding Meerut of riots and crime and putting it on the path of development. "Eight years ago, Meerut was burning in the flames of communal violence. Today, it is surging ahead with infrastructure like the Rapid Rail and Expressways," he said. During the event, the Chief Minister distributed loans amounting to Rs 29 crore to 675 entrepreneurs under the Mukhyamantri Yuva Udyam Vikas Abhiyan. Financial assistance of Rs 64 crore was also extended to 881 self-help groups. Keys to homes were handed over to beneficiaries of the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana, and farmers excelling in their field were honoured with citation certificates.

Delhi HC denies bail to DHFL promoter Kapil Wadhawan in bank fraud case

New Delhi: The Delhi high court denied bail on Monday to DHFL promoter Kapil Wadhawan in an alleged Rs 34,926-crore bank fraud case, noting that his "conduct during custody was not beyond reproach". Justice Ravinder Dudeja rejected his bail plea, saying such economic offences were not only crimes against specific victims but against the financial system at large. The CBI alleged Wadhawan, as promoter and CMD of DHFL, was the principal architect of a massive financial fraud involving diversion and misappropriation of approximately Rs 34,926 crore from a consortium of 17 banks. "The allegations regarding manipulation of valuable assets and transactions carried out during judicial custody are grave and suggest that the applicant continues to exercise significant control and influence," the HC observed. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai It noted CBI's submission that Wadhawan was facing multiple investigations and cases across jurisdictions involving serious financial offences, which undermined his argument that he posed no risk if enlarged on bail. "The court cannot permit the release of a person who is prima facie the mastermind of a deep-rooted financial fraud, especially when the trial is at a nascent stage," it concluded, noting that if released on bail he might tamper with evidence or, worse, flee from justice. "Many of the witnesses in this case are stated to be either ex-employees or associates of DHFL and, as such, there is a high risk and possibility that the petitioner might try to influence witnesses," it said. Wadhawan is accused of creating and operating 87 shell companies in the names of associates, employees, and relatives to siphon off funds, falsely recorded as retail housing loans to over 2.6 lakh fictitious customers through a non-existent "Bandra Branch-001" in DHFL's internal systems. He was taken into custody in the case on July 19, 2022, and granted default statutory bail on Dec 3, 2022, but the Supreme Court cancelled his bail on Jan 24, 2024. The court observed his "effective custody" was two years, and not four years as claimed. "Having regard to the nature and seriousness of the allegations, the gravity of the offence, the applicant's central role in the conspiracy, the potential adverse impact of his release on the trial, and the huge magnitude of the funds siphoned off, this court finds no merit in the present application," the order held.
