Move over, Musang King? Durian scene spikes in Malaysia as it savours markets beyond China

In the world of durians,
Malaysia 's Musang King may reign supreme, but a new wave of contenders is emerging.
From the creamy Black Thorn and Red Prawn to the sweet Hajah Hasmah, the government is championing lesser-known premium varieties to capture growing international demand.
Other established types like Sultan and Tekka are also seeing interest, offering the fruit at a more accessible price and broadening Malaysia's footprint in the global durian market.
Agriculture Department director general Nor Sam Alwi said Musang King and Bukit Merah are the main varieties recommended for export due to their rich, creamy texture and strong flavour, but efforts are under way to highlight other premium types such as Black Thorn, Red Prawn and Hajah Hasmah.
'These varieties are being evaluated for future certification and export readiness, based on their potential in terms of taste, texture, shelf life and suitability for long-distance shipping,' she said.
Nor Sam said that Chinese nationals, in particular, are willing to pay premium prices for these varieties.

In China, ‘bridge-builder' Singapore champions a multilateral world

A marquee visit by Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to China this week has underscored a push by Southeast Asian countries for multilateralism amid uncertainty over America's commitment to the region and free trade. Observers say Wong's comments during his five-day trip, particularly at the World Economic Forum in Tianjin, or so-called Summer Davos, are aligned with the regional agenda of Asean members in recent years. But even as Chinese President Xi Jinping called for his country and Singapore to 'stand on the right side of history' and advocate for an equal multipolar world, analysts say it remains to be seen if Beijing will put its money where its mouth is. Wong's China visit marked his first such trip outside Southeast Asia since being sworn in as prime minister in May 2024. It also comes after the decisive win of his ruling party at the general election last month. At their meeting on Tuesday, Xi in his comments to Wong echoed his message to other Asean leaders earlier this year to stand up against 'unilateral bullying' and 'tariff abuse' in reference to US President Donald Trump 's trade policies. 'Hearing that straight from the senior-most leadership in China is somewhat reassuring, but of course the proof is in the pudding,' said Chin-Hao Huang, associate professor of political science at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore.

China's durian imports plunge as stricter checks catch out traders

China's imports of fresh durians have fallen this year because of stricter sanitation checks at the border, according to people who follow the trade. The value of fresh durian imports in the first five months of this year fell by 32.5 per cent year on year to US$1.93 billion, according to the General Administration of Customs. By volume, imports were down 32.9 per cent to 390,900 tonnes. Hardest hit was Vietnam, which saw nearly 62 per cent year-on-year declines in both the value and volume of durians shipped to China, customs data shows. Vietnam's shipments totalled US$254 million during the first five months of 2025. Imports from Thailand fell 24 per cent year on year in US dollar terms over the same period to US$1.67 billion, with a slightly smaller decline in volume terms. Thailand retained its title as China's top source of imports, followed by Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries. Tighter safeguards against pesticides and other sanitation issues have slowed imports, people who follow trade said on Tuesday, adding that exporters might need some time to get used to the new rules. 'Vietnamese growers and traders need to meet the standards,' said Nguyen Thanh Trung, a political scientist at Fulbright University Vietnam. 'This year I think they may be affected a lot, but growers and traders will learn.'

Malaysia's Anwar relents, exempts imported apples and oranges from fresh tax after backlash

Imported apples and oranges will be exempted from the revised sales and services tax (SST), responding to public concerns, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on Thursday. He stated that while it is preferable to consume local fruits such as papayas and bananas, the cabinet decided on Wednesday to exempt these popular fruits. Anwar conveyed this decision to the media after launching the Kota Madani project in Putrajaya's Precinct 19 on Thursday. 'There will not be exemptions for other imported fruits as we have many local fruits to choose from. However, we compromise with apples and oranges as there have been many requests from the public.' 'The sales value threshold will now be increased from half a million to 1 million ringgit (US$236,634). There will be further announcements and clarification on this,' Anwar added. In his speech earlier, he advised that it is better to eat a local banana a day rather than apples.
