Tallahassee drivers report street parking issues, suspicious toll messages
A. We are all familiar with scofflaws on Kerry Forest Parkway. Disregard for the red traffic signal at Velda Dairy is not uncommon. Let's ask our TPD traffic enforcement squad to police the area before a serious injury is the result.
Street parking sign missing?
Q. Margie reports a problem with parking by the owners and or tenants who occupy the townhouses/ apartments on Edenderry Drive right off Shamrock Street North. Instead of parking in their garage or driveways they park on the opposite side of the street from their house.
The street is narrow, if someone is turning onto Edenderry from Shamrock and someone is exiting and if a car is parked right there it is very hard to get on or off the streets without being hit by traffic on Shamrock.
Further in, cars park on Edenderry right where Riverchase Drive exits onto Edenderry. When a car is exiting River Chase and a car is trying to turn onto Riverchase it is almost impossible due to the car parked on Edenderry. The No Parking Here To Corner sign is gone and needs to be put back up to prevent an accident there.
A. Margie, the privilege of operating a motor vehicle in Florida requires all holding such a driver license be familiar with Florida traffic law. Accordingly, in this case a very extensive Florida Statute, 316.1945 stopping, standing, or parking prohibited in specific places- subsection (1)(b)3 states No Parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk or intersection. Although the No Parking here to corner signs must be replaced, subsection (1)(b)3 tells us everything we need to know about parking near an intersection. Penalties include towing the violating vehicle and monetary fines for the driver that parks a vehicle outside fs: 316.1945.
Not knowing the law does not preclude vehicles being towed for improper parking or the driver who parked the car improperly being cited if a traffic crash should occur.
We ask our traffic engineers to install/ reinstall the No Parking Here To Corner signs at both intersections. We thank our traffic law enforcement division for enforcing fs: 316.1945 (1)(b)3 at these two intersections.
Suspicious toll messages
Q. Joe received an official looking text from Florida HS&MV stating he owed $6.99 for not paying a toll. He reports no particular info of the event was provided. Is it a legitimate claim? I don't use toll roads. I am a senior citizen.
A. Joe you will never receive an official message by text from Florida Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles or any other state agency. Not for any reason. A certified letter maybe but never a text message. The message you received has no legitimacy. Text messages come with a phone number, if you should receive another text claiming it is from the State of Florida let me know the accompanying phone number. Probably a spoof number but people attempting to extort money, and $6.99 was likely a test run..
Road conditions worsening
Q. David, referring to our Street Scene report of Pedrick Road's degraded pavement condition has this to say about seeing just one road mentioned in poor condition. The city is doing a very bad job of road maintenance. Ocala Road has needed resurfacing for at least 7 years. Almost any main street is in poor condition such as High Road, Fourth, Sixth and Seventh Avenues. Duval, Monticello, Bronough, Brevard. Some have to do with poorly done patchwork. We see very little resurfacing. The condition of Ocala and Monticello for many years show the city is not taking road maintenance seriously.
A. David, you speak for quite a number of Street Scene readers saying the same thing over many years. I'd like to find a believable reason the City of Tallahassee is turning a blind eye when it comes to maintaining roads and streets under their responsibility. There are just too many to be completely ignored. On a regular basis Street Scene reports local roads needing maintenance. We do thank Tallahassee public works for resurfacing Pedrick Road but David gives his list of roads in need, let's continue there. City of Tallahassee, be ready for more needy streets after this hits the presses.
Trucks on Old Bainbridge Road
Q. Bertha says, I may be kicking a stalled truck on this subject but I still have to swerve to the right on Old Bainbridge Road east of 27 when these tractor trailer trucks pass me on the left. There is barely enough room for 2 car lanes much less 18 wheelers. It seems better than it was but it's still pretty bad. There has got to be a way to get semis off this canopied family friendly road.
A. Bertha, this uphill fight has been very exhausting but I'm telling everyone with these menacing and dangerous GPS guided tractor trailer trucks banging their way through narrow, sometimes unimproved, local roads, don't give up. Street Scene is gaining momentum in convincing the GPS (Global Positioning System) industry and the US trucking industry to change the way they direct truck traffic off multilane main highways onto local roads.
A trip to Pasco County
Q. Julie is telling anyone who will listen that US-19 through Pasco County is a dangerous road and asks Street Scene to include her concerns in the online section of the Tallahassee Democrat to get the attention of law enforcement. Speeding is rampant and so is cellphone use while driving and DUI. But you don't see police until after something happens. We need help here, I hope you will include the lack of traffic enforcement in your column.
A. Street Scene is very familiar with this beautiful area of Florida made less beautiful by traffic crash statistics. US-19 is a well maintained six lane divided highway with dedicated right and left turn lanes throughout. The problem, as you point out, Julie are irresponsible drivers and the lack of traffic law enforcement.
Street Scene calls upon FHP, Pasco County Sheriff and Local Police in the many municipalities to join forces to establish a task force to set up a life saving project to saturate the known problem areas with officers writing traffic citations and making arrests. I know from personal experience employing such a blitzkrieg of law enforcement works to wake up habitual speeding violators and actually get them and the drug impaired off the streets altogether. I was a team member of a DUI squad that had a set-goal to reduce traffic fatalities. We met our goal.

Electric Light Commercial Vehicle Market worth $116.60 billion by 2032
DELRAY BEACH, Fla., Aug. 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The electric light commercial vehicle market is projected to reach USD 116.60 billion by 2032 from USD 24.49 billion in 2025 at a CAGR of 25.0% during 2025–2032, according to a new report by MarketsandMarkets. The growth in the electric light commercial vehicle (eLCV) market can be attributed to the rising demand for efficient urban delivery and service vehicles, driven by e-commerce expansion and small business needs. Leading OEMs such as Ford (E-Transit), Stellantis (Citroën ë-Jumpy, Opel Vivaro-e), Rivian (EDV 700), and Mercedes-Benz (eSprinter) are taking strategic positions in this segment by offering purpose-built electric vans tailored for fleet operations. The integration of telematics, predictive maintenance, and route optimization technologies is contributing to a reduction in fleet operating costs by up to 20%, while also enhancing vehicle uptime. Strategic collaborations between OEMs and energy providers, including Stellantis with LG Energy Solution, Ford with SK On, and GM's BrightDrop initiative, are improving access to depot-based high-capacity charging infrastructure to support demanding commercial duty cycles. Concurrently, advancements in battery technologies, particularly modular battery packs and battery swapping systems developed by firms such as NIO and Ample, are minimizing vehicle downtime and improving operational flexibility. Emerging markets across Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and select countries in North America offer substantial untapped potential, supported by increasing urbanization and electric vehicle penetration levels still below 10% in many countries. Download an Illustrative overview: Browse in-depth TOC on "Electric Light Commercial Vehicle Market" 269 - Tables96 - Figures285 - Pages By vehicle type, vans are expected to hold a prominent market share during the forecast period. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Great Rates and Award-Winning Service The Insurance Savings You Expect Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You Electric vans are a driving force in the electric light commercial vehicle market due to their suitability for urban logistics, regulatory compliance, and long-term cost efficiency. The significantly lower total cost of ownership, stemming from reduced maintenance, cheaper energy costs, and government incentives, makes electric vans especially attractive to fleet operators. Additionally, major logistics and delivery firms such as Amazon, DHL, and UPS are accelerating adoption to meet sustainability goals and benefit from operational savings. Electric vans are expected to witness an increasing demand due to lower operating costs, negligible harmful emissions, and government support. With the growing demand for electrification of mass transit and developments in battery technologies, pure electric vans were introduced to the market. OEMs are increasingly focusing on launching electric vans. For instance, in June 2025, Tata Motors launched the all-new Tata Ace Pro, heralding a transformative era in small cargo mobility. The Tata Ace Pro is India's most affordable four-wheel mini truck, delivering exceptional efficiency, unmatched versatility, and superior value. E-Transit Courier is a compact van that offers up to 300 km of range, up to 700 kg payload, and 25% more load space than the previous generation Transit Courier, enabling it to carry two Euro pallets. By GVWR, the 6,001-10,000 lbs segment is expected to hold the dominant market share during the forecast period. The 6,001–10,000 lbs GVWR holds the dominant share of the electric light commercial vehicle market and has witnessed steady adoption growth over the past four to five years, driven by early pilot deployments, maturing EV supply chains, and falling battery costs that have enhanced vehicle affordability and operational viability for fleets. The market is driven by the rising demand for electric light commercial vehicles that offer a balance between payload capacity and operational efficiency. This category includes popular models such as the Ford E-Transit, Rivian EDV 700, Bollinger B2 Chassis Cab, BrightDrop Zevo 600, and Mercedes-Benz eSprinter (long wheelbase variants), which are widely used by logistics companies, utility service providers, and urban freight operators. The 6,001–10,000 lbs segment of the electric light commercial vehicle market is primarily driven by the increasing fleet electrification efforts of last-mile logistics companies seeking to comply with stricter emission regulations and reduce operating costs. For example, Ryder System's June 2024 order of 200 BrightDrop Zevo 600 electric vans for its North American fleet, citing strong demand from e-commerce and retail clients for sustainable deliveries. The payload capacity and driving range offered by vehicles in this segment make them ideal for urban and regional logistics, especially where city access regulations favor zero-emission commercial vehicles. Europe is projected to be the fastest-growing market during the forecast period. In Europe, strategic partnerships between OEMs and energy companies are driving the rollout of charging infrastructure tailored for commercial fleets, including depot-based and fast-charging hubs across key logistics corridors. Further, the growth of e-commerce is also pushing demand for eLCVs in parcel delivery and urban logistics. The market is gradually shifting toward mid-sized and large electric vans capable of 100–200 miles of range and over 1,000 kg payload, which aligns with the operational needs of fleet managers. Furthermore, leasing and battery-as-a-service models are gaining traction, helping to reduce the upfront cost burden for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The UK is the leading country with the largest market share in the region. Electric vans dominate the UK electric light commercial vehicle market. For instance, British Gas placed one of the UK's largest commercial EV orders, deploying around 1,000 Vauxhall Vivaro-e vans. As of May 2025, Royal Mail operates the UK's largest electric delivery fleet with approximately 7,000 electric vans, including a recent order of 2,100 Stellantis EVs (1,100 Peugeot E-Partner and 1,000 E-Expert vans), in addition to nearly 8,000 Ford E-Transit vans to accelerate its decarbonization strategy. These vehicles are favored for their compatibility with urban low-emission zones and expanding last-mile delivery needs. The E-Transit, in particular, has gained traction due to Ford's established dealer network and service support, while the Vivaro-e benefits from Stellantis' competitive fleet pricing and government-backed grants. Further, Kia is steadily entering the UK electric light commercial vehicle market, with its first dedicated electric van, the Kia PV5, expected to debut in 2025 as part of its Purpose-Built Vehicle (PBV) lineup. The uptake is especially visible in London, where congestion charges and ULEZ regulations have accelerated fleet electrification. This state has the highest maximum speed limit in New England. Can you guess which one?
Speed limits have been rising in recent decades, and with them has come increased deaths, according to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In 2023, nearly 12,000 deaths, or 29% of all motor vehicle fatalities, came from speed-related crashes. An IIHS study that used data from 1993 to 2017 found that a 5 mph increase in the speed limit causes an 8% increase in death rates on interstates and freeways. It causes a 3% increase in deaths on other roads. Most New England states have some of the lowest maximum posted speed limits in the country. But one has a maximum speed limit 10 miles per hour higher than the rest. More: Is it illegal to drive slow in the left lane in Massachusetts? Pam McVety: The EPA's big beautiful falsehoods
I don't like being lied to, nor do most of you, but that is exactly what the Environmental Protection Agency is doing. There is so much misinformation coming from our president and his administration, it is hard to keep up with them or understand how they affect us, but this one is the 'mother of all lies' and it will hurt us. The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing to rescind the 2009 Endangerment Finding under the Clean Air Act, that said that greenhouse gases contribute to air pollution and endanger public health. Surely by now, each of you knows that this is true, right? Pretty much everyone understands that our rising carbon emissions are leading to warmer, more destructive weather including more violent hurricanes. Tallahassee has experienced it. The nightmarish tornado outbreak that swept through our neighborhoods in April 2024, cost us over $63 million. Local friends have seen their homes damaged repeatedly by our increasingly violent weather and this is happening all over the country and the world. So, why in God's name would our federal government propose a rule that puts us in more danger by eliminating its authority to regulate greenhouse gas (carbon) emissions? We all know the answer. Our federal government is being administered to accommodate the rich and powerful, like the fossil fuel industry. It is not being run to protect or help us. This proposed rule revision, in part, is to help the auto industry, and I am not even sure that all segments of the industry support it. It will remove the regulations that require vehicles to reduce their carbon emissions. It will also potentially help power plants and other industries not have to reduce their carbon emissions. And wait for it, here is the worse part: The EPA announced that 'By repealing all greenhouse gas emission regulations for motor vehicles and engines, we are reinstating consumer choice and giving Americans the ability to purchase a safe and affordable car for their family, while decreasing the cost of living on all products that trucks deliver". This is greenwashing. They are justifying this rule by suggesting that not regulating carbon emissions will make the price of vehicles and goods cheaper for you. Don't fall for this. The costs of dealing with the climate crisis, which will worsen if we don't cut our carbon emissions, are a lot more serious and costly than the cost of a vehicle or the products that trucks deliver. They are in the hundreds of billions of dollars annually and are increasing. Lives are being lost; millions of them each year due to the burning of fossil fuels and human suffering is unmeasurable. For verification of this, I refer you to the Fifth National Climate Assessment and the Sixth IPCC Assessment Hoping you will join me in voicing your objection to the EPA about rescinding its authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. You have until Sept. 15. Your comments can be as simple as I object to this rule because it will hurt my family. Send your comments to a-and-r-Docket@ To read more about this rule go to EPA proposed rule: Reconsideration of 2009 Endangerment Finding and Greenhouse Gas Vehicle Standards. There is a lot at stake here and contrary to EPA's claim that this will help you financially, there is more than your family budget at stake. History will show that this may be the single most egregious action this administration took, unless they get us in a nuclear war. It is a blatant disregard for our health and safety or your pocketbook. It is not rational nor is it based on science or reality. Rescinding the endangerment finding will hurt us in Tallahassee. It will hurt our children and our grandchildren. It will hurt our neighbors near and far. We cannot afford to ignore this.
