Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Customs Department (JKDM) thwarted three separate smuggling attempts involving contraband goods worth a staggering RM16,668,938.04, including alcohol, boneless chicken breast and rice. JKDM Assistant Director General Siti Mang said the seizures were made during coordinated enforcement operations at Sepanggar Port between May 14 and May 29, this year.
Advertisement 'The operations reflect JKDM Sabah's firm commitment to combating smuggling activities which pose a threat not only to national revenue but also to public safety and food security,' she told a press conference at Sepanggar Port, Tuesday. Siti said the largest seizure involved 33 containers of imported beer which lacked the required import permits under the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2023. The contraband, estimated at 659,856 litres, carried a value of RM3.97 million, with duties and taxes amounting to a further RM11.86 million. 'Customs officials discovered that the shipping manifests had been falsified, with the goods declared as aluminium products to evade detection,' siti said. In the second case on May 16, authorities inspected a single container at Sepanggar Port and discovered 28,008kg of frozen boneless chicken breast, valued at RM233,400. 'The items required import permits from the Sabah Department of Veterinary Services but were falsely declared as frozen vegetables. 'The estimated duty and tax losses from this attempt were RM93,360,' she said. On May 29, a third inspection uncovered 150,000kg of fragrant and glutinous rice that had been falsely declared as broken rice for animal feed. Siti said the rice, packed in sacks and lacking proper import documentation from the Director General of Paddy and Rice Regulatory Authority, was valued at RM356,250. The evaded duties amounted to RM142,500. All three cases are being investigated under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967, which provides for a fine of no less than 10 times the value of the seized goods or RM50,000, whichever is greater. Offenders also face a maximum jail term of five years, or both. Siti urged the public to refrain from involvement in smuggling activities, which she said cause not only revenue leakages but also endanger national safety and disrupt the welfare of local communities. 'We call on the public to continue supporting Customs in the fight against smuggling by sharing any relevant information,' she said. Anyone with information on smuggling activities is encouraged to contact JKDM via the toll-free hotline 1-800-88-8855, or report to the nearest Customs office. The identity of whistleblowers will be kept strictly confidential. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Johor Customs thwarts bid to smuggle nearly RM1 million worth of drugs using courier service

JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor branch of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) thwarted an attempt by a drug distribution syndicate using a courier service to smuggle drugs, weighing 10.194 kilogrammes, and worth RM955,687, here in April. Its director, Aminul Izmeer Mohd Sohaimi said that in an operation conducted at 3.35 pm on April 23, the enforcement team inspected two suspicious parcels from Hong Kong at a mail and courier centre here. 'The results of the inspection on each box found two packets of candy placed on top of a white bottle containing a black liquid. 'Initial tests on the black liquid revealed a type of morphine,' he said at a press conference here today. Aminul Izreer said the two boxes were addressed to a named person at a double-storey terrace house in Pulai, Johor, and the packages were declared as food items. However, the ownership status of the house is still under investigation, and efforts to track down the syndicate and the owner of the parcels are being actively carried out. Published on: Thursday, June 12, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 12, 2025 By: Cynthia D Baga Text Size: Venantius (left) being escorted by the MACC personnel after the proceedings. Kota Kinabalu: A former Rela officer from Tenom who told the court that he submitted the false claims for the assignment allowances during the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) as he wanted to help the Tenom Rela personnel whose income was affected at that time, was jailed 14 days and fined a total of RM147,160 for seven counts of submitting false claims. Venantius Masingga, 63, said this in mitigation after he pleaded guilty to the charges against him before Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga, on Wednesday. Advertisement He told the court that the money which he obtained using the fake claims were not for his personal use but to buy food baskets for the Tenom Rela personnel affected by the implementation of MCO at that time. According to Venantius, he did not mean to commit the offence but forced to do so to help the Rela personnel. Originally, Venantius have 18 charges against him but he only pleaded guilty to the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth charges while the rest were taken into consideration by court in accordance with Section 171A of the Criminal Procedure Code. The sentences imposed on Venantius as follows: Second count – two days' jail and fined RM16,160 in default three months' jail. Third count – two days' jail and fined RM27,680 in default three months' jail. Fourth count - two days' jail and fined RM24,400 in default three months' jail. Fifth count - two days' jail and fined RM21,240 in default three months' jail. Sixth count - two days' jail and fined RM19,200 in default three months' jail. Seventh count - two days' jail and fined RM18,640 in default three months' jail. Eight count - two days' jail and fined RM19,840 in default three months' jail. The court ordered Venantius to serve the jail sentences concurrently. Venantius did not pay the fines. The charges stated that Venantius had submitted the MCO assignment allowance claims under the names of his wife and children who actually never performed their duties during the MCO with the intention of deceiving the Director of Rela Sabah. He committed the offence between March 2020 and August 2021 at the Rela Sabah Headquarters. The offence under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which is punishable under Section 24(2) of the same Act provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, or a fine of not less than five times the amount or value of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction. In mitigation, Venantius who was not represented, asked for leniency saying that it was his first offence and very remorseful as well and promised not to repeat the offence in future. He added that he was suffering from hypertension and that he has two small and schoolchildren to look after. Venantius also told the court that he had served 20 years as army, 20 years as Rela personnel and six years being a coach for National Service Training Programme (PLKN). 'I will get ready to do community service if the court orders so,' said Venantius. However, MACC Prosecuting Officer Rekhraj Singh urged the court to hand down an appropriate sentence taking into consideration the rampancy of the case as well as seriousness of the offence. Rekhraj submitted that as Rela personnel, Venantius should be a good example to the community and that the sentence should be a lesson not only to Venantius but others. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
