Scrap metal worth RM9.17mil from Americas, Europe, Asia seized at Port Klang
PORT KLANG: The Customs Department seized 1,960 tonnes of scrap metal worth RM9.17 million from 83 containers in the Port Klang Free Zone during operations in May and June. Selangor Customs director Mohamad Azhar Ahmad Paharazi said the scrap metal was seized following cooperation between the department's Enforcement Division and the National Targeting Centre (NTC). "Serial inspections and confiscations of the 83 containers revealed that they contained scrap metal weighing an estimated 1,964,234kg, believed to have been brought in without an import permit. "The importation of scrap metal is subject to an Import Permit issued by Sirim Bhd as stipulated under the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2023," he said at a press conference at Wisma Kastam in Pulau Indah. Azhar said the syndicate also made false declarations by declaring the goods as aluminium alloy, aluminium materials, computer components, precious metals and unprocessed aluminium. "Preliminary investigations show the metals were imported from several countries across the Americas, Europe and Asia. Further investigations are ongoing under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967," he said. In a separate case, a total of 240 sacks containing 12 tonnes of tin ore worth an estimated RM1.92 million were seized through inspections of two lorries carrying loads of five and seven tonnes in front of a factory in Pulau Indah, Port Klang, on July 3. Azhar said further checks found that the lorry drivers submitted a suspected fake Customs Form 1, with a declaration date stated for August 2025. "The seized tin ore amounts to 240 sacks with an estimated value of RM1.92 million. "We are still investigating the source and intended destination of this tin ore as well as its intended purpose. "The case is being investigated under Section 133(1)(c) of the Customs Act 1967," he said.

Selangor customs seizes RM9.17m scrap metal at Port Klang Free Zone
KLANG: The Selangor Customs Department has intercepted an illegal shipment of 1,964 tonnes of scrap metal valued at RM9.17 million after confiscating 83 containers at the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ). Selangor Customs director Mohamad Azhar Ahmad Paharazi stated that the seizure was made following joint inspections with the National Targeting Centre (NTC) over two months starting in May. Initial investigations indicated the metals were imported without permits from various countries in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, likely for domestic use. 'The goods were falsely declared as aluminium alloy, raw aluminium, computer components, and precious metals in the Manifest and Customs Form 1. Importing scrap metal requires permits from SIRIM under the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2023,' he said during a press conference at Wisma Kastam, Pulau Indah. In a separate case, Mohamad Azhar revealed that eight 20-foot containers carrying 221.7 tonnes of steel coils worth RM1.29 million were also seized at PKFZ. The shipment, declared as furniture and mattresses, was found to contain Prime Pre-Painted Steel Coils imported without permits. 'The goods are subject to anti-dumping duties of 52.1 per cent under the Customs (Anti-Dumping Duty) Order 2021. A total of 62 coils valued at RM769,434 were seized, with duties and taxes amounting to RM516,290. Investigations are ongoing,' he added. From May to early July, Selangor Customs also prevented smuggling attempts involving other goods worth RM4.37 million, including duties and taxes, at West and North Port Free Zones. - Bernama

RM16.6 million smuggled goods seized
Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Crystal E Hermenegildus Text Size: JKDM officers, including Siti (centre), showing the smuggled goods, including alcohol, chicken breast and canned products, seized. Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Customs Department (JKDM) thwarted three separate smuggling attempts involving contraband goods worth a staggering RM16,668,938.04, including alcohol, boneless chicken breast and rice. JKDM Assistant Director General Siti Mang said the seizures were made during coordinated enforcement operations at Sepanggar Port between May 14 and May 29, this year. Advertisement 'The operations reflect JKDM Sabah's firm commitment to combating smuggling activities which pose a threat not only to national revenue but also to public safety and food security,' she told a press conference at Sepanggar Port, Tuesday. Siti said the largest seizure involved 33 containers of imported beer which lacked the required import permits under the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2023. The contraband, estimated at 659,856 litres, carried a value of RM3.97 million, with duties and taxes amounting to a further RM11.86 million. 'Customs officials discovered that the shipping manifests had been falsified, with the goods declared as aluminium products to evade detection,' siti said. In the second case on May 16, authorities inspected a single container at Sepanggar Port and discovered 28,008kg of frozen boneless chicken breast, valued at RM233,400. 'The items required import permits from the Sabah Department of Veterinary Services but were falsely declared as frozen vegetables. 'The estimated duty and tax losses from this attempt were RM93,360,' she said. On May 29, a third inspection uncovered 150,000kg of fragrant and glutinous rice that had been falsely declared as broken rice for animal feed. Siti said the rice, packed in sacks and lacking proper import documentation from the Director General of Paddy and Rice Regulatory Authority, was valued at RM356,250. The evaded duties amounted to RM142,500. All three cases are being investigated under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967, which provides for a fine of no less than 10 times the value of the seized goods or RM50,000, whichever is greater. Offenders also face a maximum jail term of five years, or both. Siti urged the public to refrain from involvement in smuggling activities, which she said cause not only revenue leakages but also endanger national safety and disrupt the welfare of local communities. 'We call on the public to continue supporting Customs in the fight against smuggling by sharing any relevant information,' she said. Anyone with information on smuggling activities is encouraged to contact JKDM via the toll-free hotline 1-800-88-8855, or report to the nearest Customs office. Customs seize 272 tonnes of scrap iron worth RM1.64mil in West Port
KLANG: The Selangor Customs Department has seized 272.6 tonnes of scrap iron worth RM1.64mil that was illegally brought in, following the detention of 14 containers at West Port Free Zone recently. Customs assistant director-general (enforcement) Raizam Setapa @ Mustapha said all the goods were confiscated after a series of inspections and seizures conducted in April 2025. He said preliminary investigations revealed that the scrap metal was imported from several countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia, and is believed to have been brought in for recycling purposes. "Inspections found that the goods were declared as copper alloy, alternators and used vehicle components, including aluminium powder, in Customs Form 1 to mislead authorities. "All the goods confirmed as scrap iron were seized for not having an import permit issued by the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) as outlined under Item 5, Part 1, Fourth Schedule, Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2023," he said during a press conference at Wisma Kastam, Pulau Indah here on Monday (May 26). In other developments, Raizam said Selangor Customs also seized 26,238 litres of alcoholic beverages worth RM188,724 after detaining a 40-foot container on May 6. He said the container arrived at Port Klang on April 22, with the goods declared as furniture. Raizam also stated that Customs successfully foiled attempts to smuggle five types of commodities, including rice, chewing tobacco and 21 units of washing machines and clothes dryers, with a total value of RM3.5mil through seizures involving the West and North Port Free Zone areas throughout April and May. "All cases are being investigated under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967 for importing prohibited goods contrary to a prohibition and Section 133(1)(a) of the same act for making false declarations," he said. – Bernama
