FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — Fiorentina says coach Raffaele Palladino has left the Serie A club 'by mutual consent' after only one season in charge.
It was reported earlier this week that Palladino had handed in his resignation but that the club was trying to convince the 41-year-old coach to stay.

'Fiorentina can confirm that Raffaele Palladino's contract, as well as those of his backroom team, has today been terminated by mutual consent,' the Italian club said Friday in a brief statement.
Palladino coached Fiorentina to a sixth-placed finish in Serie A and a Conference League spot. It was regarded as a successful season, so his reported resignation had caught club management off guard.
Fiorentina also reached the semifinals of the Conference League. It had lost in the final of that competition in each of the previous two seasons, under Vincenzo Italiano.
Less than a week after the season ended, the Serie A coaching carousel is ramping up. Massimiliano Allegri returned to AC Milan on Friday and a number of other changes are expected.

Redemption for Yates on epic mountain climb as he closes in on Giro d'Italia title
SESTRIERE, Italy (AP) — Simon Yates produced one of the greatest rides of his career on one of cycling's most grueling climbs to all but win the Giro d'Italia on Saturday. Yates started the penultimate stage in third, one minute, 21 seconds behind previous leader Isaac Del Toro, but the British cyclist launched a solo attack on the beyond-category climb to Colle delle Finestre — the same mountain that spelled heartbreak for him seven years ago — to ride clear of his overall rivals. Advertisement Yates was openly sobbing after he crossed the line more than five minutes ahead of Del Toro. 'When the route was released I always had in the back of my mind to try and do something here and close the chapter, let's say,' an emotional Yates said, as he was trying to hold back tears. 'I maybe look relaxed but I also had doubts this morning, if I could really do something, but the guys they encouraged me and believed in me, so yeah, thanks to them.' With just the mostly ceremonial finish in Rome left on Sunday, Yates moved into the lead of the three-week race and is all but certain to lift the Trofeo Senza Fine (Trophy With No End) for the first time. Advertisement Yates, who won the 2018 Spanish Vuelta, is 3 minutes, 56 seconds ahead of Mexico's Del Toro and 4:43 ahead of Ecuador's Richard Carapaz. Ottawa's Derek Gee is fourth, 6:23 behind Yates. 'I was close, and this is a thing, but at the end I didn't win," said Del Toro, who was nevertheless smiling as he saluted at the finish. "I will just keep working and I will come back for sure. Redemption for Yates Yates' attack had echoes of Chris Froome's audacious move on the Finestre in 2018 that earned him the trophy. This time around, Yates made his move on the early slopes of the Finestre and had about 45 seconds on Del Toro and Carapaz when he hit the white gravel roads. The duo didn't collaborate behind him. 'We could have been the strongest but we were not the cleverest,' said Carapaz, the 2019 champion. 'In the end he (Del Toro) lost the Giro, he didn't know how to race well and the most clever rider won.' Yates crested the climb with a lead of 1:41 on the pair and caught up to Visma–Lease a Bike teammate Wout van Aert, who helped him pull farther away on the descent. 'I'm not getting any younger as well and to win these, especially the Giro, something that I've really targeted for many, many years … I think it's the best it will be.' French Open 2025: Coco Gauff emerges from a tough second set to return to Week 2 in Paris
PARIS (AP) — Coco Gauff got off to a terrific start in the French Open's third round Saturday, taking 12 of the first 15 points for a 3-0 lead after just 10 minutes. The rest of the opening set went smoothly, too. Things got much tougher from there, and the 2023 U.S. Open champion was merely two points from dropping the second set, before getting back in the right direction and defeating Marie Bouzkova 6-1, 7-6 (3) to reach Week 2 at Roland-Garros for the fifth consecutive year. Gauff, a 21-year-old from Florida , was the runner-up in Paris in 2022 and is seeded No. 2 at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament this year. Next up for her will be a matchup on Monday against No. 20 Ekaterina Alexandrova, with the winner moving into the quarterfinals. After needing just a half-hour to claim the first set Saturday, Gauff wound up in a 75-minute struggle in the second. That set included eight breaks of serve in a row as the sounds of popping fireworks drifted over to Court Philippe-Chatrier from the nearby soccer stadium belonging to Paris Saint-Germain, whose fans were gathering to attend a watch party ahead of the Champions League final against Italy's Inter Milan in Munich, Germany, later Saturday night.
