BARCELONA (Reuters) -Barcelona's dreams of a Champions League, Copa del Rey and LaLiga treble have vanished after Inter Milan roared back from the brink of elimination to grab a phenomenal 7-6 aggregate win and end the Spaniards' European campaign in the semi-final.
Another show of attacking genius by teenager Lamine Yamal and midfielder Pedri had put Hansi Flick's side within touching distance of their first Champions League final in a decade - before they succumbed to the same defensive flaws they have been getting away with for most of the season.
Barcelona are an attacking juggernaut with 163 goals in 56 games this season: 43 of those in 14 Champions League games.
But they have also been playing with fire at the back, conceding 24 goals in Europe's top-flight competition including four to Benfica, three to Borussia Dortmund and seven to Inter in the semi-final games.
Barca's thrilling season has included eight fightback wins in all competitions, including against Atletico Madrid, Benfica, Celta Vigo and a couple against bitter rivals Real Madrid.
But defeat in Milan showed they have to add some defensive steel to their swashbuckling attack.
After conceding 16 goals in their last seven matches, Barca's young squad has learned a painful lesson against a veteran Inter side chasing a fourth Champions League title and their first in 15 years after losing to Manchester City in the final two years ago.
Over both games, Inter scored seven goals in only 10 shots on target - ruthlessly illustrating Barcelona's vulnerability.
The Italians withstood a storm thanks to their fantastic goalkeeper Yann Sommer who made 14 saves over both legs of the semi-final. Barca lost Germany keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen early in the season and resorted to veteran Wojciech Szczesny, who came out from retirement but could not make the necessary impact in two close games in Barcelona and Milan.
LALIGA NOW THE PRIORITY
The five-times European winners cannot spend long licking their wounds: they must quickly turn their attention to LaLiga, where they top the table and on Sunday host rivals Real Madrid, who trail them by four points with four games to go.
Unbeaten domestically since late December, Barcelona will try to grab a fourth consecutive victory over Real this season and a second in less than a month after a win in extra time that earned them the Copa del Rey title a few days ago.
"It's very cruel. It's true that the team gave everything and deserved to be in the final, but we're young and we have to learn from this and next year we'll give even more of a fight," Pedri told reporters on Tuesday.
"Now we're hurt, but we have to focus on Real Madrid because on Sunday the league is at stake for us."

DOUBLE-TOUCHED penalties, such as the disallowed kick by Julian Alvarez that helped knock Atletico Madrid out of the Champions League, should in future be retaken, international football's rule-making body said on Tuesday. 'The situation where the penalty taker accidentally kicks the ball with both feet simultaneously or when the ball touches the penalty taker's non-kicking foot or leg immediately after they have taken the kick... is rare,' wrote Lukas Brud, the secretary of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in a circular. It did occur in the Champions League round-of-16 second matchup between Atletico and Real Madrid in March. The tie finished 2-2 on aggregate and went to a shoot-out. On his attempt, Alvarez slipped but still found the net. Video review detected that he touched the ball twice as he shot. The referee ruled the shot a miss under Law 14, which deals with the penalty kick, and Real went on to win 4-2. After the match, European governing body UEFA said that 'under the current rule, the VAR had to call the referee signalling that the goal should be disallowed'. UEFA said it would hold talks with FIFA and IFAB. Brud said the situation had not been addressed by the existing rule. 'As it is not directly covered in Law 14, referees have understandably tended to penalise the kicker for having touched the ball again,' wrote Brud. However, he added, the law 'is primarily intended for situations where the penalty taker deliberately touches the ball a second time before it has touched another player'. 'This is very different from the penalty taker accidentally kicking the ball with both feet simultaneously or touching the ball with their non-kicking foot or leg immediately after they have taken the kick, which usually occurs because they have slipped.' Brud pointed out that even an accidental second touch could be unfair to a goalkeeper because it changes the ball's trajectory. Therefore, he wrote, IFAB had decided that 'if the kick is successful, it is retaken'. If a kick during the game is unsuccessful, the result is an indirect free kick, as it would be for a deliberate second touch, unless the referee decides to play an advantage for the defending team. In a shootout it remains a miss.

Garces' 'granny connection' to Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Fans have been wondering how did this footballer from the Western Hemisphere end up in Malaysia's national team. Facundo Garces hasn't graced the M-League before, so his name doesn't ring a bell with the fans here. So, the news of one of the national team's latest heritage players has raised eyebrows, and many wondered about his links to Malaysia. On Monday, the 26-year-old centreback was announced as one of the new heritage players to be added to Harimau Malaya. Garces is to strengthen the defence ahead of the Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 10. Most of the fans welcomed Garces' coming and some were even surprised that a player of Malaysian descent is playing for La Liga side Deportivo Alaves. According to Argentine media outlet Garces, who previously played for Club Atletico Colon in Argentina before joining Alaves in Spain, has a Malaysian grandmother. "For Facundo Garces, who once played with Colon, it is understood his connection to Malaysia is through his grandmother," reported the Argentine media outlet. Garces' presence should provide more options for Harimau Malaya coach, Peter Cklamovski, in forging a formidable team against Vietnam. Cklamovski used the services of heritage players — 29-year-old Dutch-born midfielder Hector Hevel in the 2-0 win over Nepal in an Asian Cup qualifier on March 25 and the 23-year-old flanker Spanish-born Gabriel Palmero in the 2-2 with Cape Verde last week. Three more foreign players — Rodrigo Holgado, Jefte Betancor and Jon Irazabal — are also reported to be joining Harimau Malaya for the match against Vietnam.
