Sonic fans just realising why iconic hedgehog is blue ahead of fourth film
Sonic the Hedgehog fans have only just realised why the iconic video game character is blue - and it turns out there's even a reason for the colour within the franchise's lore. Sonic is one of the most popular video game characters of all time, and he's been featured in over 100 gaming titles since his first appearance in 1991's Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis.
In 2020, Sonic became the subject of his own live-action film, which has since spawned two further films, with a fourth on the way in 2027. With interest in the super-fast mammal still rising, fans are now starting to ask one very pertinent question - why on earth is he blue?
The real-world reason for Sonic's striking blue coat is simple. Sega created him in 1991 as a mascot that was supposed to rival the success Nintendo was having at the time with their mascot, Mario. As Mario is predominantly red, Sonic was made blue as a direct contrast, as well as blue being the primary colour in the Sega logo.
As for Sonic's red shoes, they were actually inspired by both Santa Claus and Michael Jackson, with the design team particularly taking inspiration from the latter's 1987 album, Bad.
A TikTok video from Byte Sized Science explained: "Sega made Sonic to rival Mario, and they needed a bold mascot. Blue matched Sega's logo colour, and the red shoes were inspired by Michael Jackson's Bad cover. Even his attitude was designed to feel edgy and Western, unlike Mario."
But Sonic's blue colour isn't just something that can be explained away by good marketing strategies. The character actually has an in-game reason for his blue hue, and it's all to do with his arch-nemesis in the games, Doctor Robotnik.
In a Sonic comic it was revealed that Sonic was originally a regular hedgehog with natural brown fur. Everything changed when he stumbled into the laboratory of a scientist named Ovi Kintobor, who was looking for the seven Chaos Emeralds so that he could lock the world's evil away inside them.
Sonic decided to help him by using his superspeed to find the last Emerald. The scientist was so fascinated by his skills that he began running tests on the hedgehog.
But when Sonic ran so fast that he broke the sound barrier, the sonic boom destroyed the testing gear and turned Sonic blue in the process.
The hedgehog stuck around with Kintobor after the incident, but later, another accident occurred in which the scientist fell into his evil collecting machine while holding an egg. The evil stored in the Chaos Emeralds was transferred into Kintobor and the egg, fusing them into the evil Doctor Ivo Robotnik - the Eggman.
The Blue Blur will star in his fourth film in 2027, where Ben Schwartz is expected to reprise his role as the voice of the titular hedgehog. Jim Carey has played Dr Robotnik in the past three instalments, but it is not yet known if he will return for the upcoming fourth flick.
It's also believed that Sonic's love interest, Amy Rose, could make her debut in Sonic 4, but no actress has been confirmed to be voicing her as of the time of writing. According to IMDb, however, both Lady Gaga and Scarlett Johansson have been considered for the role.
For Sonic fans who can't wait for the new film, a new Sonic racing game titled Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, is scheduled to be released on September 25th this year for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. A Nintendo Switch 2 release is planned for a later date.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is expected to be released on March 19, 2027.

Three ingredient air fyer doughnuts that are on the plate in minutes
These little balls of sweetness are a great treat for the weekend and easy to make A Scots mum has shared a recipe for three ingredient air fryer doughnuts which take minutes to make and are a great treat for the whole family. The doughnut doughballs are made with flour, yoghurt and vanilla essence, items many will already have in the kitchen. Ailsa, from Inverness, who posts on TikTok under @familymealswithailsa first shared the recipe in 2023 when the simple treats video clocked up 2.4 million views on the social media platform. And this week she recreated the viral recipe once again for her 94.7 thousand followers. She said: "Let's recreate my most viral video doing the three ingredient viral doughnuts." The list of ingredients are 150g flour, 200g Greek yoghurt and vanilla essence. And that's all you need to make the doughy delicacies. Ailsa added: "The last time I did this video it hit 2.4 million." She goes on to combine the three ingredients in a large bowl before mixing them all together, with a little help from her daughter. As it begins to form a doughy consistency, she then advises to use your hands to 'bring it all together'. After sprinkling flour on her work surface, Ailsa continues to knead the dough. She said: "Then we are going to put it into little balls". She then forms the dough into small dough ball shapes and adds: "They're now going to go into the air fryer at 180C for six to eight minutes." While the doughnuts are cooking she said: "While they're in the air fryer, in a bowl I'm going to mix together some sugar and cinnamon. And in the other bowl we are going to melt off some butter." Once removing the dough balls from the air fryer, she then dips them into the butter before rolling them in the sugar and cinnamon mix. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The final step is to melt some chocolate in a mug for dipping. Ailsa said: "And there we have it, our three ingredient air fryer doughnuts." She did however concede that they have a few more than three ingredients, saying: "Although they're not really three ingredient anymore because there's the butter, the sugar and the cinnamon so I would really say that that was six." After a positive taste test from her daughter and husband she added: "Well, the whole gang approves so give it a try." Followers agreed. One said: "Those look delicious," to which Ailsa replied: "So good!!". Another added: "Well done guys, they look amazing." One asked about using zero per cent fat Greek yoghurt to which Ailsa replied: "That's what I used," and another asked what type of flour to use. Ailsa said: "Just any self raising flour." And she told another fan to use the air fryer setting on the gadget instead of bake setting.

My new ‘caravan toy' is great if you're holidaying in one this summer – it's light, easy to pack & feeds the kids quick
A CARAVAN mum has revealed her new go-to gadget that's perfect for feeding kids in a hurry and light enough for you to pack this summer. If you're a parent who's ever returned from a long beach day with hungry kids in tow, you'll know that dinner prep can feel like a race against the clock. 3 Caravan mum Amy, known to her TikTok followers as @amylissx, has found a nifty little gadget that's transformed how she feeds her brood on the road. Amy and her family have been documenting their caravan trips around the UK, with their latest adventure taking them to sunny Cornwall. But in between sandy beaches and family fun, she revealed her latest gadget and it's already a hit with her followers. 'I've got a new caravan toy,' she grinned in her TikTok video. 'Just adding to my Ninja collection. I've got the Ninja Crispi glass portable air you just need a quick and easy chicken nugget. Smiley faces will do." The Ninja Crispi is far from your average bulky air fryer. It's lightweight, compact, and designed for small kitchens, caravans and campervans and is perfect if you want big cooking power without the chunky footprint. It even looks the part, with three stylish colour choices like blue, stone and sage green, so you can coordinate with your holiday home's interior. How does it work? Launched in the UK in March 2025, the CRISPi works by housing the cooking mechanism inside a neat 'PowerPod' lid, which clicks onto one of two glass dishes. Once you're done, you can serve straight from the dish or pop it straight into the fridge, no extra washing up required. Watch the video to see inside the family-of-seven's caravan home Like all air fryers, it promises to whip up meals faster than a conventional oven, with that all-important crispy finish but without drowning food in oil. And for parents like Amy, it means she can feed three kids in minutes without sacrificing space in the caravan or lugging around heavy equipment. The Ninja Crispi is currently on sale on Ninja Kitchen UK for £149, down from £180. So if you've been thinking about making the splurge, now's the perfect time. If you fancy something similar but cheaper, Argos has the Cookworks Halogen 15L Air Fryer for £40, while Lakeland's Dual Basket Air Fryer (currently £89.99) offers double the cooking capacity. Ninja themselves also have the Double Stack 2-Drawer Air Fryer on sale for £199.99, for those who want to cook two meals at once without taking up all the counter space. For Amy, though, the Crispi has earned pride of place in her caravan kitchen. 'She's stunning, she's lightweight, and she feeds the kids fast,' she laughed. How to save money on your food shop Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how you can save hundreds of pounds a year: Odd boxes - plenty of retailers offer slightly misshapen fruit and veg or surplus food at a discounted price. Lidl sells five kilos of fruit and veg for just £1.50 through its Waste Not scheme while Aldi shoppers can get Too Good to Go bags which contain £10 worth of all kinds of products for £3.30. Sainsbury's also sells £2 "Taste Me, Don't Waste Me" fruit and veg boxes to help shoppers reduced food waste and save cash. Food waste apps - food waste apps work by helping shops, cafes, restaurants and other businesses shift stock that is due to go out of date and passing it on to members of the public. Some of the most notable ones include Too Good to Go and Olio. Too Good to Go's app is free to sign up to and is used by millions of people across the UK, letting users buy food at a discount. Olio works similarly, except users can collect both food and other household items for free from neighbours and businesses. Yellow sticker bargains - yellow sticker bargains, sometimes orange and red in certain supermarkets, are a great way of getting food on the cheap. But what time to head out to get the best deals varies depending on the retailer. You can see the best times for each supermarket here. Super cheap bargains - sign up to bargain hunter Facebook groups like Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK where shoppers regularly post hauls they've found on the cheap, including food finds. "Downshift" - you will almost always save money going for a supermarket's own-brand economy lines rather than premium brands. The move to lower-tier ranges, also known as "downshifting" and hailed by consumer expert Martin Lewis, could save you hundreds of pounds a year on your food shop.

Dozens of hot air balloons take to the skies above Bristol
Dozens of hot air balloons of all shapes and sizes have filled the skies above Bristol for the city's annual fiesta. Around 90 balloons took part in a mass ascent at Ashton Court Estate, where the popular event takes place, on Friday morning. Hundreds of fans were up early to watch the opening ceremony of the free-to-attend Bristol International Balloon Fiesta just after 6am, with balloon burners lighting up to mark the start of the event. One balloon then took to the sky with a union flag, followed by dozens of other brightly coloured balloons which flew over Bristol towards Bath, Somerset. Commercial balloon pilot Tom Hilditch, 35, from Brighton, was among the pilots to fly in the mass ascent and praised the 'idyllic conditions'. He said: 'It was great to fly with all the other balloons. 'There were idyllic weather conditions, with nice slow winds. 'The winds were a little too variable when trying to find a landing spot but otherwise it was a perfect morning.' Mr Hilditch, who has had his pilot's licence for 13 years, is planning to cycle around England towing a hopper balloon – which does not have a basket – to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust next year. This year's fiesta, running from Friday to Sunday, will celebrate Bristol and its heritage links to the world of hot air ballooning. The activity has been part of Bristol's culture for many years, with the first recorded flight in the city dating back to the 18th century. During the fiesta, balloons are scheduled to take off early morning and evening – though this is weather permitting. Special shape balloons will be present at the event, including the Up balloon, Thomas the Tank Engine, Sonic the Hedgehog, Astro the Alien, Rupert the Bear and Oggy the Friendly Dragon – which comes from America. There is also a Wallace & Gromit Moon Rocket balloon, Buster and Bella the Bulldogs, Slither the Snake, Snow White, an Ordnance Survey Map and BBC Globe. In the evenings, night-glows – where dozens of tethered balloons light up in sync to a special musical soundtrack – will take place.
