Arab News2 days ago
RIYADH: The Madinah Region Development Authority participated in the main session of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at the UN headquarters in New York, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday.
In the session, titled 'Transformation from the Ground Up: Acting at Local Level,' the authority highlighted Madinah's pioneering role and the Kingdom's leadership in localizing the Sustainable Development Goals.
Abdulrahman Ibrahim, the authority's chief data and innovation officer, said Madinah had become a model for international best practices.
Key initiatives include the 2023 Madinah City Voluntary Local Review — the first in the Kingdom and second in the Arab region; the 2024 State of Sustainable Development Report for Madinah Region — the first Voluntary Subnational Review in the Arab region; and the launch of the Atlas of Sustainable Development in Madinah City Neighborhoods, a global first for precise, neighborhood-level SDG assessment.
The session also reviewed successful local and regional approaches to accelerating sustainable SDG solutions, discussing key enablers and opportunities to expand local action.
The authority's participation, part of the Saudi delegation led by Minister of Economy and Planning Faisal Alibrahim, underscores the Kingdom's commitment to sustainable development aligned with Vision 2030.
The UN forum, running through to July 23, also featured dialogue sessions on global frameworks for resilient urban development and strategies to create value for cities through data-driven trends.

Al Rajhi Capital sees no changes to MSCI Standard Index in August

Al Rajhi Capital said it does not expect any Saudi company to be added to the MSCI Saudi Arabia Standard Index but flagged Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Co. as a potential deletion and downgrade to the Small Cap Index. The firm cited Saudi Kayan's SAR 6.9 billion market cap as below the required threshold, adding that that the company's adjusted free float market cap also falls short. A removal could trigger outflows of about SAR 248 million. The MSCI review will be announced on Aug. 7, with changes effective Aug. 27. The firm said Umm Al Qura for Development and Construction Co. (Masar) and Riyadh Cables Co. exceed the total paid-up capital threshold but remain below the free float requirement, adding that Riyadh Cables could become eligible if its share price rises by about 25% and meets the adjusted threshold before the November review. Astra Industrial Group and Aldrees Petroleum and Transport Services Co. may become eligible if their shares rise more than 30%, assuming the current minimum thresholds remain unchanged, the brokerage added.

Final ruling overturns GAC fine against 2 Electrical Industries subsidiaries

Electrical Industries Co. (EIC) said the Administrative Court of Appeal issued a final ruling on July 7, upholding the Administrative Court's decision to annul the Committee for Adjudication of Competition Law Violations' two rulings concerning the fines imposed on two of the company's subsidiaries. In a statement to Tadawul today, July 23, the company said it received the official court judgment from the Administrative Court of Appeal via its legal counsel on July 22. It also noted that the costs associated with this matter cannot be determined at this stage. EIC confirmed that the ruling is considered final. However, it remains subject to potential review by the Supreme Administrative Court if any party files an objection within the legally defined period, particularly on grounds of misapplication of the law or a violation of Shariah by the Court of Appeal. According to data available with Argaam, EIC received in July 2024 a decision from the Committee for Adjudication of Competition Law Violations, which includes imposing a penalty of SAR 26.1 million on two of its subsidiaries for potential violations of the Competition Law. The Administrative Court in Riyadh ruled to annul paragraphs five and six of the committee's decision in January 2025, which related to the fine. Subsequently, the General Authority for Competition (GAC) appealed the decision before the Administrative Court of Appeal.

SAB CEO sees no slowdown, pressure in Saudi Arabia's business sectors

Saudi Awwal Bank's (SAB) retail and corporate segments delivered strong results in the second quarter of 2025, Al Arabiya reported, citing SAB's CEO and Managing Director (MD) Tony Cripps. He emphasized that SAB sees no signs of slowdown or pressure across business sectors in the Kingdom. Cripps attributed the improved profitability during the quarter largely to effective cost management. The bank has not observed any distress in corporate client activity across segments, he said, noting that credit risk was limited to just one or two names among the bank's clients during Q2. The bank is currently comfortable with its capital levels, but future expansion will necessitate raising more capital. Thus, SAB intends to tap international markets again, with a growing focus on broader participation from Asian markets in upcoming financing rounds. SAB's CEO and MD pointed out that the bank was able to offset lower interest income with an increase in fee-based revenues, and that it focused on residential mortgages to stabilize interest returns. The bank also acted early in response to expectations of falling interest rates.
