A reminder of a cameraman catching Ian Botham's six, a lifetime supply of multivitamins and two cans of cold lemonade Vodka : The story behind Harry Gill's stunning catch off Tim David's six
'I had a bit of time, but it was just coming straight for me. I was praying I didn't drop it like (Broncos star) Ben Hunt did in the 2015 grand final. The lemonade ones are bloody good. I've got a bit of a hangover this morning. It just stuck. My hand is a bit sore this morning but, yeah, happy with it. My phone is blowing up. People I haven't spoken to in 10 years have been in contact,' Gill, who is a pilot in Darwin, told The Age on Monday.
With Australia playing at Darwin for the first time in 17 years, David had come to the crease with the Australian team losing three wickets for 30 runs in 3.1 overs. David, who would play a knock of 83 runs off 52 balls, was batting on 40 runs having hit four sixes and two boundaries before he launched a Corbin Bosch delivery into the stands with an alert Gill in the front row taking the catch in the stands meters away from the advertising boards in the 13th over. The catch would draw reactions from commentators with former Australian opener Mark Waugh talking about the famous catch taken by Channel Nine Cameraman Tony Fox off the six by England's Botham off the bowling of Australian bowler Simon O'Donnel in the World Series Cup Final at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 1987. Fox had taken the catch two-handed near the sight-screen in the front row in the stands with a cigarette in his mouth and throwing the ball back to the field. 'You just need a smoke and you'd be right at home.' Waugh would say on Fox Sports post Gill's catch on Sunday. Waugh's fellow commentator Mark Howard too would praise the one-handed catch by Gill. 'A nice snare in the crowd. Two cans in the right hand, the kookaburra in the left. Cool and casual.' Howards said on Fox Cricket.
Gill though would talk about Fox's catch as 'much cooler' but shared that the South African fielder Drewald Brewis too termed it as a 'good catch'.'His is so much cooler, bro. I wish I had a durry (cigarette) in my mouth so I could have done that. The South African cricketer that was in front of me said it was a pretty good catch,' Gill told The Age.
At the time of the catch, Gill was wearing a cap bearing the name of the multivitamin brand Good Day. The brand was launched by Tom Birmingham and Eddy Simpson, hosts of Hello Sport podcast and Birmingham was quick to offer Gill a life-time supply of the Multivitamins. 'We are dead serious about lifetime supply. Natural life, of course. Once he's dead, we will turn the subscription off. We're getting his address and he'll be getting whatever. We'll have something dropped off at his house every month. We're going to fly him down to Sydney at the end of the year for our Christmas party. It's like the multivitamin gods are smiling on us. The catch was phenomenal. Two cans in the hand means he's an alpha male. He looked excited and pleased with himself, but also, in a way, like he does it all the time. This will be shown forever, like that guy smoking the dart behind the sight screen.' Birmingham told The Age.
As for Gill, he just termed his holding of two cans as a 'lazy effort' and shared how he went home post the match and watched a horror movie. 'It's just obviously easier to go and buy two drinks than one. The lines weren't even that bad. It was just me being lazy. I got a few more tins to celebrate after. It turned out to be a pretty good game. I then just went home and watched a horror movie,' said Gill.

It Was Nerve-Wracking When...: Glenn Maxwell Makes Honest Admission After His Match-Winning Knock Against South Africa
Star Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell made honest admission after playing an impressive match-winning knock in the third and final T20I against South Africa at Cazaly's Stadium, Cairns on Saturday. Chasing 173 for victory, Australia were in deep trouble at 122/6, before Maxwell took charge and produced another piece of run-chasing brilliance. The big-hitting Aussie star played an unbeaten knock (62 off 36 balls) with the help of eight fours and two sixes at a strike-rate of 172.22. As the equation came down to four required from two balls, Maxwell finished the job with a trademark reverse sweep six off the match's penultimate ball and guided Australia to a series victory. After his match-winning knock, the 36-year-old said that it was nerve-wracking in the middle when Australia lost a couple of wickets in a row. "It was nerve-wracking when we lost a couple of wickets in a row. Corbin Bosch bowled a brilliant over. To keep the run-rate near 9 or 10, we were down to two wickets, I had to keep the majority of the strike," said Maxwell in the post-match presentation. "Nice to get a couple out of the middle right at the end. I just stay calm, watch the ball, try and not preempt too much, understand the areas where I can get the boundaries and where I can get the twos. Just tried to stay on strike as much as possible," he added. The veteran all-rounder mentioned that the series win against South Africa is a confidence booster for Australia before the 2026 T20 World Cup. "We've had a great run with this T20 group. To have another series win against a quality opposition in South African is great for our confidence heading forward. There's still about 13-14 internationals before the T20 World Cup and we are building something really nice in this group. It's certainly a very fun change room to be in and I am enjoying every moment," said Maxwell. Also Read: Glenn Maxwell's Unbeaten Fifty Leads Australia To 2-1 Series Win Over South Africa Meanwhile, Tim David, who got the Player of the series winner acknowledged that he might not have received the honour of winning the award had it not been for Maxwell's 'blinding innings'. "Without Maxi playing a blinder inning tonight, I wouldn't have been standing here. There's been contributions from everyone in this series. We've had so much fun, we had a great time playing up in the northern Australia. Let's see what happens in the future," said David. Speaking about his own batting form, David said," Just enjoying going out there and competing. Keeping it really simple and not trying too hard. Form comes and goes but I feel like the lot of work I have been doing, it's been contributing to success for this team. We have got so many different people who can contribute, so I'm happy to be part of that at the moment.

Sunderland Make Dream Premier League Return, Thrash West Ham 3-0
Richarlison scored twice to give Tottenham manager Thomas Frank a dream home debut with a 3-0 win over Burnley on Saturday, while Sunderland shocked West Ham 3-0 on their return to the Premier League. Frank was seconds away from launching his era in charge with a trophy until a late Paris Saint-Germain revival won the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday. The former Brentford boss replaced Ange Postecoglou despite the Australian ending Spurs' 17-year trophy drought by lifting the Europa League. However, Postecoglou was undone by a miserable return of six home league wins last season as Tottenham finished just above the relegation zone in 17th. Richarlison made the most of the faith shown in him by Frank as the Brazilian turned in Mohammed Kudus' cross to open the scoring. The pair combined again on the hour in more spectacular fashion as Richarlison's bicycle kick crashed in the Ghanaian's delivery from the right. Brennan Johnson was Tottenham's hero of the Europa League final with the only goal against Manchester United and he began the new season by racing clear to slot in the third. Burnley racked up 100 points in their Championship promotion campaign last season but did little to suggest they will buck the trend of sides being relegated straight back to the second tier. For the past two seasons, all three promoted teams have gone down. However, big-spending Sunderland enjoyed a dream return to the top-flight with a second-half demolition of West Ham. Former Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka is among pool of new signings attracted to the Stadium of Light. But it was three players key to their promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since 2017 who scored. Eliezer Mayenda's looping header gave the Black Cats lift off on the hour mark. Centre-back Dan Ballard headed in the second before Wilson Isidor rounded off a huge win in stoppage time. Newcastle miss Isak Newcastle missed the unsettle Alexander Isak as they failed to find the breakthrough against 10-man Aston Villa in a 0-0 draw at Villa Park. The Magpies were the dominant side even before Ezri Konsa's red card for bringing down Antony Gordon 24 minutes from time. Isak had not been involved during Newcastle's pre-season as he appears determined to force through a move to Liverpool, who reportedly saw a £110 million ($149 million) offer for the Swedish striker rejected. The two clubs face off in their next league match at St. James' Park on August 25. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said he wants an end to the saga one way or another. "From my perspective, you want a resolution quickly. It's taking away the focus of the players and the supporters," said Howe "We want to be united together. We'd like a resolution, but we're not in control of that." Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz struck in the 96th minute to salvage a 1-1 draw at Brighton after Matt O'Riley's penalty put the Seagulls in front. Manchester City begin their campaign away to Wolves later on Saturday, hoping to bounce back into contenders for the title after a season to forget in 2024/25. Arsenal are not in action until Sunday when they travel to face a transformed Manchester United attack. Defending champions Liverpool began their title defence with a dramatic 4-2 win over Bournemouth on Friday thanks to late goals from Mohamed Salah and Federico Chiesa.

Irfan Pathan Reveals Story Behind 'Tongue Out' Celebration: 'Smelling Like Indian Curry'
Last Updated: Irfan Pathan revealed his 'tongue out' celebration in the 2008 Perth Test was a response to racial taunts from the Australian crowd. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan recently shared several untold stories from his playing days, including the true inspiration behind his iconic 'tongue out' celebration during the 2008 Perth Test against Australia. India and Australia have always had a fierce on-field rivalry, characterised by intense competition and heated moments. The 2007-08 series was no exception, filled with controversies and spirited battles. During the Perth Test, while Irfan was fielding near the boundary, he was subjected to racial taunts from a section of the Australian crowd. 'When I was fielding at the boundary line, they targeted me by saying things like, 'You have eaten Indian curry, you're smelling like Indian curry.' The Australian crowd try to get under your skin," Irfan was quoted as saying in an interview with The Lallantop. Instead of moving away, Irfan chose to respond in his own unique way. 'I didn't change my field position and instead gave them replies. 'When I took a wicket, I took my tongue out to indicate that my tongue is very clean and there's no smell. So, that celebration was for the crowd," he explained. India went on to win that historic Perth Test by 72 runs, marking one of their most famous overseas victories. Irfan was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance, scoring 28 and 26 runs in the two innings and taking five wickets to help India bounce back in the series. However, alongside these highs, Irfan also faced career setbacks. He recalled how in 2009, despite performing well in Sri Lanka alongside his brother Yusuf Pathan — where India chased down 60 runs off just 27-28 balls — he was sidelined during the New Zealand tour. 'It was back in 2009, when we were in New Zealand. Before that, my brother (Yusuf Pathan) and I had won matches in Sri Lanka. The situation in which we had pulled a win – if it had been anyone else in our place, they wouldn't have been dropped for a year. In that match against Sri Lanka, we needed 60 runs from just 27-28 balls, and we won it from there," Irfan was quoted as saying to The Lallantop. 'In New Zealand, I was benched for the first match, the second match, and the third match as well. The fourth match was a draw because of rain. I wasn't in the final match either. Then I asked Gary sir why I had been dropped. If there was something I needed to improve, he could tell me, but I wanted to know the reason I was left out," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
