PE investor 3G buys Skechers in $9.4bn deal

Business Mayor11-05-2025
Investment firm 3G Capital will acquire footwear maker Skechers USA for USD 9.4 billion – the footwear industry's biggest buyout to date – as the shoe brand grapples with the impact of steep US tariffs. The transaction is expected to close in Q3 of 2025, the company said in a statement on Monday.
The deal will be financed through a combination of cash provided by 3G Capital as well as debt financing that has been committed by JPMorgan Chase Bank. Before the deal was announced, Skechers had a market value of about USD 7.4 billion. It brought in USD 9 billion in revenue last year. Shares of the shoe company rose as much as 25% on Monday in New York.
Skechers will continue to be led by its CEO, Robert Greenberg. After the deal, Skechers will become a private company. Skechers, founded by Greenberg in 1992, has focused on less-flashy sectors of the footwear market, with comfortable styles. 3G, the New York-based private equity firm, has a reputation of doing few but large deals. Founded in 2004, it made its first splash by acquiring Burger King in 2010.

COHR Earnings: Coherent Stock Crashes 16% on Disappointing Guidance

The stock of Coherent (COHR) is down 16% after the semiconductor company reported revenue guidance that disappointed Wall Street. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. The Pennsylvania-based company announced earnings per share (EPS) of $1, which topped the $0.92 expected among analysts. Revenue for the year's second quarter totaled $1.53 billion, which was ahead of the $1.51 billion forecast on Wall Street. Sales were up 16% from a year earlier. Unfortunately, Coherent's revenue guidance overshadowed what was otherwise a strong print from the optical materials and semiconductor concern. For the current quarter, Coherent said that it expects revenue of $1.53 billion, which is basically the same as sales generated in Q2 of this year and is 0.6% below analysts' consensus estimate. Laser Business Sale Coherent's networking business unit saw its revenue rise 39% year-over-year in calendar Q2 to $945 million, above expectations for $940 million in sales. That strong showing was partially offset by the company's other two business lines, materials and lasers, which were down a combined 8% in the quarter. Just before Coherent's latest earnings were released after markets closed, the company announced the sale of its laser business for defense markets at a price of $400 million. Money generated from the sale will be used to pay down the company's $3.7 billion in debt. Is COHR Stock a Buy? The stock of Coherent has a consensus Strong Buy rating among 15 Wall Street analysts. That rating is based on 14 Buy and one Hold recommendations issued in the last three months. The average COHR price target of $105.31 implies about 8% downside risk from current levels. These ratings are likely to change after the company's financial results.

Time to Buy JPMorgan & Citigroup Stock for Potential Rate Cuts

Following July's optimistic headline inflation data from the Consumer Price Index (CPI), investor sentiment has continued to peak in anticipation that the Fed could cut interest rates in September. Among the sectors that could potentially benefit the most from lower rates is the financials, specifically banks, with JPMorgan JPM and Citigroup C being of interest in particular. To that point, JPMorgan and Citigroup may be prime beneficiaries of a steepening yield curve, where they can finance their operations at lower short-term rates and boost their margins by lending at higher long-term rates. Keeping this scenario in mind, let's see why now appears to be an ideal time to buy JPMorgan and Citigroup stock. Strong Capital Positions Adding to the notion that investing in JPMorgan and Citigroup stock may be lucrative, especially if rate cuts are ahead, is that both banks performed well in the 2025 Dodd-Frank Act stress tests, an annual evaluation by the Federal Reserve to assess whether large banks have enough capital to withstand economic downturns. Regarding core capital versus risk-weighted assets, JPMorgan and Citigroup both had a standardized CET1 Capital Ratio well above their minimum required percentage of 4.5% at 15% and 13.5%, respectively. As the largest domestic bank in the U.S., JPMorgan stood out with more than $4 trillion in total assets and over $350 billion in shareholders' equity. Being well-positioned to continue capital distributions, JPMorgan has authorized a new $50 billion share repurchase plan and announced it will be increasing its quarterly dividend by 7% to $1.50 per share during the third quarter. Citigroup also authorized a $20 billion share repurchase plan and has a strong cushion for any future challenges with a net cash position of over $400 billion. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Positive EPS Revisions Making JPMorgan and Citigroup stock more attractive ahead of potential rate cuts is that they are already benefiting from a very positive trend of earnings estimate revisions. In the last 30 days, JPMorgan's FY25 EPS estimates have risen 5% from $18.53 to $19.50. Plus, FY26 EPS estimates are up 3% in the last month from $19.75 to $20.38. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research As for Citigroup, its FY25 and FY26 EPS estimates are up roughly 4% in the last 30 days, with it noteworthy that these projections now call for more than 27% annual earnings growth for the foreseeable future. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Bottom Line With investors starting to clamor for a September rate cut, the outlook for JPMorgan and Citigroup may become even more appealing. Thanks to strong capital positions, these banks have continued to reward their shareholders with dividends and buybacks, and their stocks look poised to move higher when considering the rising EPS revisions.
