USMNT Legend Expresses Concern Over Malik Tillman's Leverkusen Future- "Shooting Yourself In the Foot" originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
With the new 2025-26 season approaching, many USMNT fans are excited to see the American players in Europe. One of the USMNT stars who made a big move was Malik Tillman, who joined Bayer Leverkusen.
Tillman's arrival at Leverkusen is seen as a positive for many USMNT fans as the move is a step up in level when comparing the Bundesliga to the Eredivisie. Tillman shone at PSV and is expected to improve his level at Leverkusen, but it also brings concern.
USMNT legend Alexi Lalas approves of Tillman joining Levekrusen this summer, but he also sees the risk that comes with it. With less than a year left until the 2026 World Cup, a move to a higher level in Europe could lead to fewer minutes and jeopardize his spot on the USMNT World Cup roster.
Alexi Lalas on Malik Tillman's Risk joining Bayer Leverkusen
On the Alexi Lalas' State of the Union podcast, the former USMNT defender talks about how Tillman may risk a spot on the national team depending on whether the player will play a big part for Leverkusen in the upcoming season.
Tillman appears to be part of Erik Ten Hag's plans due to his arrival this summer and has been given the number ten, which was previously worn by Florian Wirtz.
Despite appearing as a key part of the club, Lalas still believes that Tillman or any player is taking risks when joining a new club a year before a World Cup. Lalas does believe in the player and thinks he will be at the World Cup.
Alexi Lalas: "I always feel that there's nothing more important for a player ultimately than a World Cup, except a home World Cup...The risk of going someplace else and it not working and you shooting yourself in the foot, but as important as the World Cup is, the World Cup is going to come and go..."
Bayer Leverkusen's Upcoming Schedule
Bayer Leverkusen will soon play their first game of the season on August 15 in the DFB Pokal. Tillman is expected to be back soon and potentially in time for Leverkusen's Bundesliga opener on August 23.
Leverkusen will play two Bundesliga games before the September international break. They will play Hoffenheim at home and play Werder Bremen away.
Bayer Leverkusen's First Five Matches in 2025-26 Season
August 15: Leverkusen vs Sonnenhof GroBaspach (Away)
August 23: Leverkusen vs Hoffenheim (Home)
August 30: Leverkusen vs Werder Bremen (Away)
September 12: Leverkusen vs Eintracht Frankfurt (Home)
September 21: Leverkusen vs Borussia Mönchengladbach (Home)

German Cup: Ten Hag makes successful debut with Bayer Leverkusen and Bielefeld upsets Bremen

BERLIN (AP) — Erik ten Hag made a winning start as Bayer Leverkusen coach with a 4-0 result at fourth-tier team Sonnenhof Großaspach in the first round of the German Cup on Friday. Patrik Schick, Brazilian wing back Arthur, debutant Christian Kofane and Álex Grimaldo all scored, but they assumed control only after Großaspach captain Volkan Celikwas was sent off in the 66th with two bookings in as many minutes. Leverkusen was forced to defend for long periods after Schick's 32nd-minute opener. The Czech forward also needed to clear the ball off the line. Arthur scored the second shortly after Celikwas' sending off and the other goals followed Mert Tasdelen's late sending off for a bad challenge on Leverkusen defender Axel Tape. Ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager, took over from the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso and has had little time to work with a squad undergoing huge changes. Key players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Granit Xhaka have left while Kofane, Tape, Ernest Poku, Ibrahim Maza, Jarell Quansah and goalkeeper Mark Flekken all made their debuts on Friday. 'Of course it needs time, you could see not every action worked out,' Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said of the changes. 'But we saw today that we've got interesting young players. Ibrahim Maza did well and showed his qualities between the lines. And that's why it will take a little time, but we still have a good team.' The match was interrupted in the first half by a summer storm featuring hailstones. Referee Michael Bacher led the teams off the field. It resumed after a 40-minute break. Bielefeld does it again American forward Isaiah Young struck in the final minutes to fire last season's beaten finalist Arminia Bielefeld into the second round with a 1-0 win over Werder Bremen. The Bundesliga side's Leonardo Bittencourt was sent off in the 54th and Bielefeld pushed hard for the winner. Young made his entrance in the 79th and sent the home fans wild when he tucked the ball inside the left post in the third minute of stoppage time. Bielefeld, then playing in the third division, knocked out a host of Bundesliga clubs — including Bremen — on its way to the final in May, when Stuttgart proved too strong. Stuttgart's title defense won't start till later this month as it's playing Bayern Munich in the German Supercup on Saturday. Also on Friday, Union Berlin routed fourth-tier side Gütersloh 5-0 away, and second-division Magdeburg enjoyed a 3-1 win at third-division Saarbrücken. ___ AP soccer: Ciarán Fahey, The Associated Press

US winger Kevin Paredes hit by another injury setback with Wolfsburg

WOLFSBURG, Germany (AP) — United States winger Kevin Paredes is facing another spell on the sidelines with a foot injury at Wolfsburg after missing almost all of last season. The German club said Tuesday that Paredes had undergone successful surgery the day before on his foot and would be out 'for the time being.' The 22-year-old Virginia-born Paredes was a rising star for Wolfsburg and the U.S. after making his national team debut in 2023 but injuries have affected his development. Paredes only played twice in the Bundesliga last season after a foot injury sidelined him for months. Wolfsburg didn't specify if his latest operation was related to that problem. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

Barcelona star hails Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso: ‘He might be the best'

Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski has this week revealed his appreciation for the managerial talents of new Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso. This comes amid suggestions that the Spaniard could ultimately go on to become one of world football's very best in his role. Alonso is for his part of course currently in the thick of preparations for his first league outing in the Real Madrid dugout. After a spectacular stint on the bench at German outfit Bayer Leverkusen, the former midfielder was quickly earmarked as the ideal replacement for Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabéu this summer. Alonso has in turn been assigned the task of dethroning arch rivals Barcelona from their current perch atop the Spanish football pyramid. And as alluded to above, late this week, one of the Blaugrana's most high-profile stars has spoken out on the talents possessed by Real Madrid's new headmaster. Drawn on Alonso's name during an interview with , Robert Lewandowski revealed his take that: 'Xabi Alonso has a great future as a coach. Not only tactically, but also as a personality. In the future, he's going to be one of the best, maybe the best. He's a guy who can bring the best out of each player.' Conor Laird – GSFN
