Bay Area Cuicacalli dance group excited to debut at San Francisco Carnaval

CBS News22-05-2025
Connection is at the core of Cuicacalli: connection to the rhythm, to the Earth below, to an individual's culture.
And this year, Jesus Cortes and his students will get to connect with a crowd they've never had the chance to connect with before.
"I always work to bring my culture to the highest point that I can," Cortes said. "To me, it's a fabulous honor to be able to bring this culture, my culture, to San Francisco."
For the first time, Cortes and his students will get to perform their Mexican Folklorico dance routine in the Carnaval Parade.
"We have about 50 dancers who are going to be performing with us," he said. "We are super excited to now go and take the streets with Carnaval San Francisco here in the Mission District."
Many of his students have been with him since he started the dance group in 2007. Fernanda Mercado is one of his students who has been with him since the early days of Cuicacalli – She started when she was 5 years old.
"Dance is just my passion. It's what I want to do forever," she said.
Mercado said it will be an honor to perform in the parade this year.
"It's going to feel amazing," she said.
She is especially proud of her connection to what people in the crowd will see Cuicacalli perform.
"I'm really excited to showcase a choreography I'm making for one of our Carnaval pieces," Mercado said. "That's really exciting for me, to be able to choreograph a dance."
It's safe to say Cortes is proud of his students.
"Some of them now are in college, some of them are already professional dancers," he said. "My goal is that through dance, through the culture, they can maintain and sustain their identity and feel proud of who they are."
Come parade day, Cortes said Cuicacalli will complement Carnaval's colorful collage of cultures.
"It's going to be amazing to be a part of the parade," he said.

Xavier Worthy reacts to Taylor Swift's viral NFL draft reaction: 'That's crazy'

Taylor Swift, NFL draft scout? While most of the attention surrounding Swift's appearance on the "New Heights" podcast was focused on her relationship with Travis Kelce, the pop star also pointed out her excitement during the 2024 NFL Draft. Specifically, Swift detailed her elation about the Kansas City Chiefs' selection of Xavier Worthy with the 28th overall pick. On Tuesday, Worthy responded to the viral clip. "That's crazy," Worthy said. "I ain't gonna lie, she's the biggest pop star in this generation so it's crazy to have somebody running around the house screaming, 'We drafted you!'" The pick was only made possible after the Chiefs traded up with the Buffalo Bills, which became cause for celebration in the Swift residence. "I became like a person who was running through the halls of my house screaming, 'We drafted Xavier Worthy,'" Swift said. Kelce was a non-believer at first, saying that he wasn't sure if Swift had the right information. "I forget where I was, but you were the first person to tell me that we drafted the fastest man in the draft," Kelce said. Chiefs fans were given many reasons to be happy about the selection and their newest superfan wasted no time joining the crowd. "I was freaking out," Swift added. Worthy certainly proved to be a solid addition to the Kansas City offense in his rookie year, totaling 742 scrimmage yards and nine touchdowns on 79 touches – also proving to be someone that rose to the occasion in the postseason. Heading into his second season, the former Texas star will look to build off an impressive rookie year. Turns out, he'll be doing it with one of the world's biggest celebrities in his corner. THE MARVELS Director Nia DaCosta Comments on the Film's Low Numbers Pointing to "Lack of a Really Solid Script" — GeekTyrant

The Marvels (2023) served as a sequel to not only Captain Marvel (2019), but also the limited series Ms. Marvel , and it incorporated the returning characters into a team that worked together to save the universe. It was a fun flick, but it did not do well at the box office, and it unfortunately ended up being Marvel's lowest-grossing movie of all time. Looking back on it, director Nia DaCosta revealed to THR that it really seems to her like the script was the biggest obstacle in making the movie a success. DaCosta is making the rounds promoting her upcoming film 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple , and she said of the difference in the projects: 'Making the 28 Years Later sequel was one of the best filmmaking experiences I've had. One of the issues I had with Candyman and Marvels was the lack of a really solid script, which is always gonna just wreak havoc on the whole process.' DaCosta was a co-writer on both of those films, but she is also relatively early in her career, and she is learning new things with every film she makes, so it's great to see the missteps along the way and learn from them. The 28 Years Later sequel will be released on January 16, 2026, and her romantic drama Hedda , starring Tessa Thompson, is set to be released on October 22, 2025.
