A talented footballer blinded in a bottle attack has become an award-winning car dealer - and said the traumatic incident drove him to success.
John McTier was just 16 when he was jumped by a gang of six as he walked his girlfriend home in Govan. Now, 21 years on, he is celebrating success.
John had just signed for Ayr United and experts predicted a big future ahead of him when his career was left in ruins by the unprovoked attack in December 2004.
He was jumped by a gang of teen thugs - three boys and three girls - aged 14-17 as he walked near his home in Govan, Glasgow.
As he lay in hospital blinded in one eye and thinking about the wreckage of his life he told his mum Patricia: "I wish they had finished me off. If I can't play football I can't do anything else."
John, a promising left-winger, tried to make a comeback but losing the sight in his left eye proved too much to overcome and he was forced to give up the game.
He was initially offered just £32,000 in compensation for the assault, including just £5,000 for loss of earnings.
But lawyer Liam O'Donnell, ex-Scottish PFA chief Fraser Wishart, then Ayr coach Robert Connor and former Dundee United winger and team-mate Craig Conway told the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority he could have signed for an Old Firm club and earned £500,000 a year.
He was eventually awarded more than £260,000 in 2010 and used the cash to set himself up in business.
And the pain of the attack fuelled him and he has just been crowned Best Independent Motor Dealer at the 2025 Scottish Business Awards for his Cardonald-based firm Woodville Cars.
John told the Scottish Sun: 'It was a job to start with and then when I started doing something right, I got a buzz out of that.
'I was always wanting to be a football player, I tried my best, I wouldn't do the teenager thing and get drunk or whatever, I trained and I worked my best.
'I gave it 110 per cent. I didn't know any other thing. As stupid as it sounds, if a wee granny comes in and books you, you've got to get that right, I'm not taking that car out unless it's checked and double checked.
'It comes back to treating other people like you'd like to be treated yourself. I don't even know who nominated me for this award but it means a lot.'

One of Bill Belichick 's closest allies is reportedly 'deeply concerned' about Jordon Hudson's involvement in the UNC football program. Hudson, Belichick's 24-year-old girlfriend who has firmly embedded herself in his professional life, was reportedly banned from UNC's football facilities - as Pablo Torre claimed last month. UNC refuted Torre's report, though said Hudson would 'continue to manage all activities related to Coach Belichick's personal brand' outside of the school. 'What if I told you that [Belichick's] inner circle of actual coaches on staff, including a certain Mike Lombardi, is deeply concerned about Jordon Hudson and her presence in the building?,' Torre said on the latest episode Bill Simmons Podcast. Lombardi, a longtime football executive and analyst, previously worked under Simmons at The Ringer, and served as an assistant to Belichick's New England coaching staff from 2014-16. Torre wondered aloud whether Simmons may have spoken with him Lombardi recently, but Simmons declined to divulge any information. While Belichick and Hudson's relationship became public last year, the scrutiny around it has reached a fever pitch since she was seen inserting herself into his CBS Sunday Morning Interview. Interviewer Tony Dokoupil described her as a 'constant presence' throughout the session, in which CBS cameras captured her vetoing a question about how she and Belichick met. An email publicized by The Assembly also provided insight into her influence in Belichick's professional life, as the coach had asked for her to be copied on all emails sent to him by UNC staffers. It also emerged via several reports that her desire to be involved in the iconic HBO 'Hard Knocks' series curtailed the cameras' involvement in Belichick's work at the school. All of that led Belichick's family to reportedly grow worried about the ex-Patriots coach's relationship with Hudson, as Torre reported the coach's loved ones were 'digging into' her amid fears she could tear down 'everything he's built,' citing an unnamed source. Belichick, won six Super Bowls in New England as head coach, signed a five-year, $50million contract with UNC. And Daily Mail exclusively reported in April that Hudson had quietly amassed a $9million real estate portfolio. Torre's appearance on Simmons' show came as the Ringer founder and Spotify executive ripped into the former's reporting of the Belichick and Hudson saga. 'I've never seen anybody dine on a stupider story for a week and a half while pretending you're a journalist,' he said on a recent episode of his 'The Rewatchables' podcast. 'What the f*** was that? Seriously.' The die-hard Patriots fan also said: 'Belichick's dating a girl. 'Oh, let me do nine shows about it,'' Simmons, a Boston native, said, mocking Torre. 'Settle the f–k down … You don't need to do a media tour about a f***ing podcast.' Torre responded on social media, challenging Simmons to have a conversation with him - which they ultimately did as they hashed things on on the latter's eponymous podcast. While UNC have maintained that Hudson is not banned from their facilities - a rebuttal to Torre's original reporting which he refuted again - there has been a change to the school's communications staff. The school recently hired former Bears PR Director Brandon Faber amid the negative press it was receiving, and he was seen accompanying Belichick as he left an interview with Good Morning America.

Ivan Toney says he never feared Saudi Arabia move would end his England career
The 29-year-old has been recalled for the first time since making a money-spinning switch from Brentford to Al-Ahli, shortly after helping Gareth Southgate's side reach the Euro 2024 final. Rangers on verge of appointing Russell Martin as new head coach
The 39-year-old former Southampton boss will be installed in the Ibrox hotseat in the next 48 hours, barring any last-minute hitches. The appointment of a new man at the helm is the latest in a series of major changes at the club. Chris Hughton, Martin's boss at Norwich, offered a glowing character reference, saying on talkSPORT: 'If I'm looking at Russell's managerial background, he is known of course, for playing a certain way, very expansive in the way that he wants to play, very much a passing game and progression through the thirds. 'But he's a strong personality also. He's had a few knockbacks in his football career so far. 'I think any knockbacks, he will look at very much as experience and look to improve in every aspect that he can. I saw him recently, and he was in good form and really looking forward to getting back into the game. 'I think he's had a few offers. So this is somebody that's still very respected in the game, and of course, the rollercoaster in management, there are always going to be ups and downs, but he's a very confident individual and very confident in what he wants to do on the football pitch. 'He was very much a leader in the changing room, vocal in the meetings that we had and, of course, he was my voice when it came to any sort of direction on the players. 'So no surprise to me that he eventually went into management. He always showed those characteristics. And he was somebody that, as he improved in his career as a player, is of course very much looking to improve the same way in management.'
