Lula slams US sanctions on Brazilian judges in Bolsonaro case
"My solidarity and support go to the justices of the Supreme Federal Court, who have been affected by yet another arbitrary and completely baseless measure by the United States government," Lula said in a statement posted on X.
"The interference of one country in another's justice system is unacceptable and violates the basic principles of respect and sovereignty between nations."
Bolsonaro is on trial for allegedly seeking to stay in power by overturning the 2022 election won by Lula.
Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes ruled Friday that Bolsonaro must wear an electronic monitoring device, stay home at night and stay off social media as he awaits a verdict.
Hours later the United States revoked the visa for Moraes and his "allies" on the court, as well as their immediate family members.
"Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes's political witch hunt against Jair Bolsonaro created a persecution and censorship complex so sweeping that it not only violates basic rights of Brazilians, but also extends beyond Brazil's shores to target Americans," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement.
Moraes, one of the judges in Bolsonaro's trial for allegedly seeking to nullify Lula's election victory, said the restrictions were necessary given the "hostile acts" against Brazil by the accused and his son and former politician Eduardo Bolsonaro.
He said in a ruling Saturday that Eduardo Bolsonaro "intensified the illicit conduct... through various posts and attacks on the Federal Supreme Court on social media" in reaction to Friday's ruling.
Moraes cited a Facebook post in which the younger Bolsonaro called the judge "a gangster in robes."
Both Trump and Bolsonaro have claimed to be victims of political persecution, and the former frequently verbally attacks judges at home over their rulings. - AFP

Two mechanics lose over RM86,000 in separate scam cases in Miri

Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said in the first case, a man in his 30s received a phone call on July 24 from an individual claiming to be from the Perlis state police headquarters, alleging that his name had been linked to a money laundering syndicate. 'The victim's call was subsequently redirected to a man who introduced himself as a police officer from the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters. The suspect then instructed the victim to withdraw money from his account and transfer it to a third-party account provided by the suspect,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Farhan said the victim only realised he had been duped after becoming suspicious of the suspect's demands, prompting him to lodge a police report. 'The total loss incurred by the victim is estimated at RM79,000,' he added. In the second case, the victim, in his 20s, had come across a Facebook post on July 26 by an individual named 'Yen Ni' advertising cheap vehicles repossessed by banks. 'The victim was interested and initiated contact with the suspect via Facebook Marketplace, before further communication took place through WhatsApp,' said Mohd Farhan. He said the suspect, who claimed to be a representative of Sabrina Motor Group in Bintulu, later sent the victim a website link ( which displayed images of a black 2016 Toyota Harrier. 'The victim expressed interest in purchasing the vehicle and was asked to make a deposit and cover the costs of ownership transfer,' he said. However, the victim became suspicious when asked to make further payments for unreasonable purposes and realised he had been scammed. Mohd Farhan said the victim suffered a loss of RM7,000 in the incident. Both cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. He advised the public to remain vigilant and not to trust advertisements that promise high returns or deals that seem too good to be true. Members of the public are urged to verify the legitimacy of any investment or transaction through official channels such as Bank Negara Malaysia's Financial Consumer Alert List ( and the Securities Commission Malaysia's Investor Alert List ( 'If you have just made a fund transfer to a mule account or scam syndicate, contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) immediately by dialling 997,' he added. Sabah polls: PH has a delicate balancing act to pull off, says former CM Salleh
KOTA KINABALU: It will be up to Pakatan Harapan to walk the tightrope in juggling electoral cooperation between Barisan Nasional and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), says Datuk Salleh Said Keruak. The Sabah Umno treasurer said that with GRS opting to forge an electoral pact with Pakatan in the coming state election, Barisan will leave it to Pakatan to manage the cooperation among the three parties. ALSO READ: Sabah polls: GRS and Pakatan to continue electoral pact "For Barisan, we chose to work with Pakatan early on... (as) we are the foundation of the unity government at the federal level. So this cooperation is a logical and responsible continuation," the former chief minister said in a Facebook post on Monday (July 28). "How Pakatan manages cooperation with Barisan and GRS is none of our business. "What is important for Barisan is sincere cooperation, and our focus is to strengthen the party on the ground. "We want to win and help our coalition partners. We are not a two-faced player. "Our approach is clear – honest, open, and for the good of the people of Sabah." GRS and Sabah Barisan were partners in the 2020 state election. "The GRS decision to choose Pakatan as a partner for the Sabah election deserves respect. "It ultimately rejected the solo path and chose to work with national parties. Of course, it has (its reasons)... and the people will judge," Salleh added. "We in Barisan have been consistent from the beginning that a coalition with Pakatan is the best approach for stability," he said. There has been no immediate official reaction by GRS coalition partners to Hajiji's announcement. Salleh believes that GRS chose Pakatan as a partner because it wanted to work with the Prime Minister's party to ensure good relations with the Federal Government. "This is in line with the need to guarantee political stability and development for Sabah," he said. Over the last few weeks, Sabah Barisan and Pakatan have reached several agreements on seats to be contested in their negotiations in Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.
