Former Corpus Christi mayor Dan McQueen announces bid for congressional seat
Issued July 12, the email states that McQueen will run as an independent in the race.
The seat is currently held by U.S. Rep. Michael Cloud, a Republican candidate who was first elected to the position in 2018 and has held it since.
Members of the U.S. House of Representatives serve in two-year terms. The next election is 2026.
'With a mission rooted in community, entrepreneurship, and innovation, McQueen's campaign is focused on helping businesses start and grow — across space programs, Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), fitness, and film — while putting people first at every level,' the news release states.
McQueen, a U.S. Navy veteran, has a long political history, including several runs for local offices as well as bids for congressional seats elsewhere.
He was on the ballot for Corpus Christi mayor in 2014, 2016 and 2018.
McQueen won the role in the November 2016 election and helped to lead the city through its December 2016 tap water ban. He announced his resignation via a Facebook post after 37 days in office following questions raised about his résumé, his relationship with his chief of staff and a series of social media posts.
He announced plans in 2017 to run against U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, but later dropped out of the race, according to Caller-Times archives.
McQueen also ran for U.S. House District 35 in 2022, winning the Republican nomination, according to Associated Press reports.
He later lost to his Democratic contender in the general election, reports by San Antonio-based broadcast station KSAT show.

Nascar's San Diego Announcement Is The Next Step In A Nationwide Takeover
Drivers compete during the Grant Park 165 race of NASCAR Cup Series at the Chicago Street Course in ... More Chicago, Illinois, United States on July 6, 2025. (Photo by Jacek Boczarski/Anadolu via Getty Images) Nascar is making a major move by traveling to San Diego in 2025. Not only will the Nascar Cup Series be competing in America's Finest City, but so will the Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series from June 19-21, 2026. While the race will be held at the Naval Base Coronado, the city is enthusiastic to host a Nascar weekend. Unlike Chicago, which had a negative perception of Nascar from the initial announcement, San Diego appears to be welcoming of stock car racing. Sports Business Journal reported that the contract is between Nascar and the U.S. Navy, and Sports San Diego will help run operations and promote the event. 'As part of our nation's 250th anniversary, we are honored for Nascar to join the celebration as we host our first street race at a military base, Naval Base Coronado,' Nascar's Ben Kennedy, EVP, Chief Venue & Racing Innovation Officer, said in a statement. 'Nascar San Diego Weekend will honor the Navy's history and the men and women who serve as we take the best motorsports in the world to the streets of Naval Base Coronado.' The Cup race will be streamed on Amazon Prime as part of its summer stretch of races. This is a major step for Nascar, which is expanding its presence on the West Coast after leaving the L.A. Coliseum (an exhibition race) and Fontana's Auto Club Speedway. Not only does this announcement keep Nascar viable in a major market, but it also shows the sanctioning body's creativity is endless right now. While Nascar nearly settled on racing in Downtown San Diego, they opted for the Naval base to create a patriotic twist to the spectacle. Kennedy told SBJ that racing in San Diego on a base is 'naturally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be able to celebrate this special anniversary of the Navy and our country.' Another great element to the event is that iRacing, which will launch the first mainstream Nascar video game in several years, helped create the track. The announcement is expected to generate not only waves of interest from drivers and sports executives, but also potential sponsors. Nascar has welcomed in a plethora of new partners in 2025, and an announcement like this will certainly generate additional key sponsor interest. Nascar will not return to Chicago in 2026, but it will likely return to Chicagoland Speedway in nearby Joliet. The Mexico race's status has yet to be determined. But an announcement like this makes it clear: Kennedy and his team are leading Nascar to push the limits and get creative.

Jack Ciattarelli taps Morris County sheriff James Gannon as Lt. Governor running mate
Republican gubernatorial nominee Jack Ciattarelli announced that Morris County Sherriff James Gannon will join him on the ticket as the lieutenant governor nominee. Ciattarelli formally announced Gannon, 64, as his running mate at Johnnies Tavern in Boonton on Wednesday morning. Gannon was first elected sheriff in 2016 and is serving his third term. He is a resident of Democratic nominee Rep. Mikie Sherrill's district. Among those in attendance was Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schilllari, a Democrat until this week. Introduced by state Sen. Anthony Bucco, Ciattarelli said that the Republican party sent a clear message six weeks ago in the primary that they were united and coming for victory. 'We're a campaign that's about people, not power or politics,' he said. 'Jim Gannon has always been a man of the people. This campaign has always been about a vision for New Jersey, not division. Jim Gannon has always been about unity.' Gannon said he learned the importance of taking care of people as a child from his father, a detective in the NYPD. 'Although I didn't recognize it at the time, those days with my dad were the beginning of a career in public service,' he said. 'I stand before you honored and humbled to be your candidate for lieutenant governor for the state of New Jersey.' Gannon said that under one party Democratic rule, New Jersey is 'broken' and that Trenton Democrats are 'spending and borrowing too much' and 'taxing and tolling us to death.' Ciattarelli isn't just looking to secure the governorship for himself, either. He said with the wind at their back, he has faith that not only he and Gannon win but the Republicans have the potential to flip enough seats in the General Assembly, which is also on the ballot, to secure a majority in that chamber. Who is James Gannon? Gannon first ran for public office in 2016 after the retirement of Sheriff Edward Rochford, who served eight terms. Rochford was preceded by John Fox, who served for 18 years. During his tenure, Gannon has prioritized programs like Hope One, which provides free Narcan training and Naloxone kits, as well as access to addiction recovery and mental health programs. A lifelong Morris County resident, Gannon grew up in Boonton Township with three siblings. He has an associate's degree in law enforcement from County College of Morris and a bachelor's degree in criminal justice administration from William Paterson University. Gannon got his start in law enforcement in Boonton Township before moving to the Morris County Prosecutor's Office, the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and later Novartis Pharmaceuticals, as the Global Head of Security Risk. He has one daughter and two grandkids. His wife of 26 years died in 2010 after a battle against multiple sclerosis. If Ciattarelli is elected, Gannon would be the first man to serve as lieutenant governor in New Jersey since the post was formally created in 2005. It was first on the ballot in 2009.
