Teachers' workload under review as ministry eyes out-of-school activity restrictions
Education Department director-general Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said the move aims to reduce the workload of educators who are often involved in external assignments.
"Actually, the number of teachers who can be away in a day for such activities will also be part of our discussions," he said.
He made the remarks when closing the national-level Mahrajan al-Quran for Schools (MQSS) at Merlimau Polytechnic here today.
On Thursday, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek outlined seven measures to reduce teachers' burdens, including cancelling low-impact events and appointing members of the public as examination invigilators.
She had said that the long-standing issue has been a key focus since the start of her tenure and requires a comprehensive solution.
Among the areas receiving attention are the cancellation of events deemed to have low impact and reducing the frequency of Quality Standard of Education in Malaysia (SKPM) school management audits.
Azam said one of the ministry's current main focuses is protecting teachers' instructional time through the Strengthening Instructional Time (MMI) initiative, to ensure teachers remain focused on education and pupil development.
He said the MMI, which aims to safeguard classroom teaching and learning time, requires teachers to concentrate on pupils' academic and character than being distracted by external activities with no direct educational benefit.
"That's why I've stressed to all levels, including divisions, state Education Departments and District Education Offices that all activities involving teacher movement must be properly coordinated.
"Any programme or event involving teachers must be managed in a rotational and organised manner, so the same teachers are not repeatedly involved, which could affect the learning process in schools.
"For example, if one group of teachers attends today's Mahrajan Al-Quran programme, then for tomorrow's event like the Insaniah Development Programme, another group should take part.
"We can't say teachers should never leave school, as some events like this Mahrajan contribute meaningfully to students' spiritual development, but it must be done wisely and without burdening teachers," he said.

Old video of an ‘overly emo' minister re-surfaces to mock Fadhlina Sidek's unsuitability to helm MOE
A BIG red bull's eye seems to have been painted on Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek's back. Targeted for her perceived mishandling of Zara Qairina Mahathir's tragic death and the Education Ministry's (MOE) weak response to bullying in schools, to say the Nibong Tebal MP is under pressure is putting it mildly. The nationwide anger is seemingly an opportune time for the opposition to pour scorn and ridicule the 47-year-old former activist and lawyer who specialises in Islamic family law and child welfare. The latest to join the fray is renegade UMNO supreme council member Isham Jalil who dug up a video of a parliamentary session from 2023. The video shows an almost hysterical Fadhlina retorting to a written question by Wee Ka Siong in a belligerent manner. Banging her fists on the lectern, she sounded more like an exasperated housewife berating a child rather than a learned cabinet minister answering legitimate questions in the hallowed halls of the Dewan Rakyat. Editor's note: The description provided by KiniTV to the clip states: 'Education Minister, Fadhlina Sidek did not give space for (Datuk Seri) Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) to interrupt to ask questions when winding up the Budget 2024 debate at the committee level for the MOE. During the debate earlier, Wee who is also the MCA president had questioned the inconsistent data provided by the MOE on the issue of teacher shortages. It may be old news but the timing couldn't be worse for the country's first female Education Minister as it just reinforces the perception that she is not cabinet material. Easily provoked This is more so as Isham who was also the former UMNO information chief sarcastically remarked on his Facebook page: 'Example of KBAT to kids on how not to answer a question (*not to be followed)'. Editor's Note: KBAT which stands for 'Kemahiran Berfikir Aras Tinggi' is a Malaysian educational framework focused on developing high-level thinking skills in school pupils. The post has already generated 8.1K likes, 3.8K comments and 912 shares at the time of writing which is an indication that – like it or no – the PKR women's wing chief is very much under the spotlight. Some commenters openly questioned her ability to carry such an important portfolio. It wasn't even a provocative query, observed one commenter. One commenter aimed a sarcastic barb at her being a 'PMX (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) sycophant'. The recent birthday message to PMX involving school kids chanting 'Happy Birthday, PMX' and 'We love you, PMX' also reinforces the view that she is nothing more than apple-polisher. Her fantastical outburst unfortunately led to claims that women were unsuited to such positions of power and authority. One commenter wondered just how Fadhlina was going to approach the issue of bullying in schools when a simple query in Parliament led to such an emotional tirade. It is not a good look for the Madani administration when the person in-charge of the education portfolio is being made to look incapable, emotionally unstable and foolish. PAS leader calls for CCTV in boarding schools after Zara's death

Many were dressed in black and held placards and wore headbands saying 'Justice for Zara' and 'stop bullying'. KUALA LUMPUR : Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar has urged the government to install closed-circuit TV systems at all boarding schools to ensure student safety. Speaking at the 'Justice for Zara' gathering here today, he said the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir at a school hostel in Sabah had highlighted serious gaps in the safety of children at boarding schools. 'The education ministry needs to be accountable for this incident,' said Sukri. 'Nobody is above the law, and those responsible for Zara's death should be punished.' (Facebook pic) Zara died in hospital a day after she was found unconscious at 4am on July 16, allegedly after falling from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. Police said a task force investigation had uncovered elements suggesting that Zara may have been a victim of bullying before her death. Hundreds of participants gathered in front of the Sogo shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur for the rally in solidarity over Zara's death. A police estimate put the attendance at 150-200 people. Many wore black clothes, held placards and wore headbands saying 'Justice for Zara' and 'stop bullying'. The gathering was organised by a group of 100 Malay-Muslim NGOs aimed to show continued moral support and unity for Zara and her family. The organisers also called for justice to be pursued at the highest level. The gathering which lasted for about three hours, ended at 11pm. Last week, Zara's body was exhumed on the order of the Attorney-General's Chambers, to allow for a post-mortem. An inquest has also been ordered to be held, to determine the cause of death and whether there were criminal elements involved. On Wednesday, Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director M Kumar said the officer in charge of investigating Zara's death failed to follow proper procedure by not requesting a post-mortem – which was required as the death occurred under suspicious circumstances. He said the post-mortem results were consistent with the initial diagnosis that Zara died from brain injuries caused by a fall.
