The International Cricket Council 's (ICC) global call for expressions of interest (EOI) to develop a flagship mobile cricket game has attracted significant attention from prominent gaming companies , according to people familiar with the development.Several firms are understood to have shown interest, including Krafton—the South Korean publisher of Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) and a major investor in India's gaming sector; LightFury Games, a domestic studio backed by Blume Ventures and Krafton; EA Sports , known for franchises such as FIFA, F1, and Madden NFL; Dream11 , India's leading fantasy sports platform with a strong cricket-focused user base; and Nazara Technologies , which has a broad portfolio in mobile gaming and esports with a focus on sports content.Other potential participants include JetSynthesys, also backed by Krafton , Mobile Premier League (MPL), and several consulting firms. The EOI process is understood to be ongoing, with a shortlist potentially in the works. These selected parties will be invited to participate in the next stage: a detailed Invitation to Tender (ITT). Shortlisted entities will be expected to submit commercial terms during the ITT phase. The EOI was published on 16 June. The ICC and the gaming companies did not respond to ET's queries. Nazara Technologies , which owns the World Cricket Championship (WCC) game, said it continues to explore potential opportunities for its flagship title.Industry observers see this initiative as a key step in the digital transformation of cricket . Although cricket video games have been available for years, licencing rights have typically been split among multiple stakeholders. The ICC's direct involvement seeks to consolidate these rights and introduce an officially sanctioned global title for cricket fans.Beyond traditional areas like media rights and sponsorship, gaming rights are becoming an important focus for sports bodies. They offer new avenues for engagement, revenue, and brand presence among younger, digital-first audiences. The project is being managed by ICC Business Corporation FZ LLC (IBC), the ICC's commercial subsidiary based in Dubai. IBC, in collaboration with its 12 Full Member Nations, is exploring the possibility of licencing certain intellectual property (IP) rights on a collective basis to a qualified entity for the development and publishing of a new, world-class mobile cricket game. This initiative forms part of a broader push to connect with the sport's large base of digitally native followers. With cricket's global fan base estimated at more than a billion, the ICC is looking to channel that interest into a high-quality mobile gaming experience.A key element of the project involves licensing a comprehensive set of ICC intellectual property, including tournament branding, trophies, team uniforms, and player likenesses. While final consolidation of these rights is still in progress, IBC has indicated the potential for granting exclusive global rights for mobile platforms.Applicants may also propose additional versions for PC, console, or browser platforms if such expansions support the project's commercial viability. The ICC is not offering upfront funding. Instead, the commercial framework is expected to rely on minimum guarantees combined with revenue sharing, aligning incentives between the ICC and the selected developer.Only companies with demonstrated technical expertise, financial stability, and a successful track record in mobile and sports gaming will be considered. The EOI outlines specific eligibility requirements, including experience in genres such as casual, arcade, simulation, or fantasy/strategy games, along with capabilities in live operations, user acquisition, and community engagement.Developers were required to submit an eight-page response covering their company overview, financial performance over the last three years, leadership team, and relevant project experience.Submissions also needed to include a vision for the game, addressing gameplay design, target audiences, monetisation plans, and creative direction.

More Indian students choosing Europe for higher education

While Indian students heading to foreign universities have declined across the top three destination countries – Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom – member states of the European Union are seeing a steady rise in the number of Indians travelling to pursue higher studies. Canada witnessed a 32% drop, with permits falling from 2.78 lakh to 1.89 lakh, the United States saw a 34% decrease, with F1 visas dropping from 1.31 lakh to 86,110 between fiscal years 2023 and 2024. The UK on the other hand recorded a 26% reduction with sponsored student visas issued to Indians decreasing from 1.20 lakh to 88,732 during the same time period. This reduction has come in the backdrop of tightening immigration measures including introduction of caps on student intake and restrictions on dependent visas. On the other hand, Indian students travelling to EU member states for higher education have risen by close to 80% in the last five years. From close to 50,000 students in 2018, the number has jumped to over 90,000 in 2023-24. While 56,255 students headed to foreign universities in the EU member states in 2018-19, this number jumped to over 90,000 by 2023-24. The figures for 2019-20 and 2022-23 were 66,385 and 84,736 respectively. According to data from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), as of January 1, 2024, over 11.6 lakh Indian students were studying in higher education institutions abroad. While the top three destinations accounted for 31% of Indian students collectively, EU member states accounted for 8% – a figure that has steadily been rising. 'Europe is an attractive destination for Indian students because it offers diversity of programs and a richness of cultural experience. Already 90,000 Indian students are studying in Europe…this speaks for itself. With the EU India bilateral relations with India going full steam ahead, more opportunities for people to people contact will be created,' European Union Ambassador Herve Delphin told The Indian Express. Europe has over 4,000 higher education institutions and 17.5 million tertiary education students (including college and vocational courses). It has close to 1.35 million educators and 1.17 million researchers. EU member states also offer the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's degree (EMJMD), a scholarship awarded on a competitive basis to select students which covers tuition fee, travel costs and living allowance. Since 2004, 50,000 students have got the scholarship grant. Among those who got the grant is 23 year old Arch. 'I was in no mood to go abroad. So, I applied to get admission in PG course in India through CUET. But that was way too competitive – to a damaging extent. Bacho ka dil toot jaata hai (kids get their heart broken because of the exam). I studied from a private university in Gujarat… I decided to take a gap year,' she told The Indian Express. 'I took a gap year for the scholarship because it's so competitive and at the same time prestigious. I was elated when I found out that I got in. I'm going to Poland and Ireland for a Masters in psychology under the Global Minds programme,' she said.

Donald Trump explains why he kept the original FIFA Trophy, while Chelsea got a replica

US President Donald Trump has stirred controversy after claiming that FIFA gifted him the original Club World Cup trophy, even before Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the tournament's final, the Independent reported. Speaking to broadcaster DAZN ahead of the match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, President Trump said FIFA President Gianni Infantino brought the trophy to the White House during a visit in March and told him to keep it. 'They said, 'Could you hold this trophy for a little while?' We put it in the Oval Office,' Trump said. 'Then I asked, 'When are you going to pick it up?' He says, 'We're never going to pick it up. You can have it forever. We're making a new one.'' Trump added, 'They actually made a new one. So that was quite exciting… It's in the Oval [Office] right now.' As a result, Chelsea, despite their upset win over European champions PSG, were awarded a replica trophy, not the original. President Trump also joked about issuing an executive order to rename 'soccer' to 'football' in the United States. 'They would call it football, but we call it soccer,' he said. When the interviewer asked if an order could be made, Trump replied, 'I think I could do that.' Trump's presence during the final attracted attention — and some jeers — when he appeared on stadium screens alongside First Lady Melania Trump. He later joined FIFA officials on the pitch to present medals and remained on stage even after the formalities, surprising Chelsea players. 'I knew he was going to be here but I didn't know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy. I was a bit confused,' said Cole Palmer, who scored twice in the match. Captain Reece James added, 'They told me he was going to present the trophy and then exit, but he wanted to stay.' The moment comes just days after FIFA confirmed it had opened a new office in New York City's Trump Tower — a move that has further fuelled discussion about the growing ties between Trump and global football's governing body.

Three Things We Learned From India vs England, 3rd Test At Lord's

England beat India by 22 runs in the third Test at Lord's on Monday in the latest last-day thriller between the teams. Victory left England 2-1 up in a five-match series that is fast becoming a modern-day classic. Below AFP Sport looks at three key aspects from a gripping encounter in London: Archer shows England what they have been missing Many observers wondered if Jofra Archer would still be the same bowler who made such a thrilling start to his international career as the express quick prepared to end more than four years of injury-induced exile from Test cricket at Lord's. But a match haul of 5-107 was a reminder of his quality. More than his wickets, the fact the now 30-year-old fast bowler repeatedly topped speeds of 90 mph while maintaining his accuracy was a hugely encouraging sight for England, who would dearly love Archer to be the spearhead of their attack when they look to regain the Ashes in Australia later this year. Given his injury history, how Archer recovers from his efforts at Lord's will be key to his progress and it remains to be seen if he will be fit enough to feature in next week's fourth Test at Old Trafford. But there was no denying the impact he made at Lord's on the sixth anniversary of Archer bowling the Super Over that secured England's 2019 50-over World Cup final win over New Zealand. "Every time he gets announced on the tannoy that he's going to bowl, you just hear the ground erupt and when he turns it on, the feeling in the game just changes," said England captain Ben Stokes. "What an amazing effort from him to get through those overs. He got some crucial wickets for us and it's great to have him back." Milestone madness contributes to India's undoing KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant were threatening to give India a substantial first-innings lead while compiling a superb partnership of 141. But with Rahul 98 not out approaching lunch on the third day, Pant ran himself out in what appeared to be an attempt to get his partner back on strike so he could reach his century before the interval. It was a brilliant piece of work by Stokes to remove Pant with a direct hit that ended the batsman's typically sparkling 74, but it was hard to imagine he would have risked a single had Rahul been further away from a hundred. As it was, experienced opener Rahul duly completed his second century in a Test at Lord's to secure another coveted place on the dressing room honours board. But India ended up only matching, not surpassing, England's first-innings 387 following a needlessly self-inflicted wound. Tempers flare A match marked by mutual accusations of time-wasting eventually saw India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj fined 15 percent of his match fee for his send-off to Ben Duckett after he dismissed the England opener on Sunday. Siraj was sanctioned for celebrating excessively at close proximity to Duckett after breaching a section of the International Cricket Council (ICC) code of conduct relating to "using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match". Flashpoints are always a possibility given the sheer length of time involved in a Test-match day and this has generally been a good-natured series. But Nasser Hussain had no qualms about Siraj's behaviour, with the former England captain telling Sky Sports: "He is someone who you love to have in your team. "Because when Indian fans are desperate for their cricketers to show some passion and fight, no one does that better than Mohammed Siraj."
