Worker electrocuted during repair work, kin stage protest
Mohali: A tragic incident in the village of Mor Thikri in Derabassi claimed the life of 34-year-old contract worker, Lakhveer Singh, who was electrocuted while repairing an overhead power line.
The deceased, a resident of Matwale village, is survived by his wife and two children.
According to eyewitnesses and family members, Lakhveer Singh climbed a transformer on Monday to carry out repairs when he suffered an electric shock, which caused him to fall to his death. The incident has sparked outrage, with the victim's family and local farmer union leaders accusing Powercom of gross negligence.
On Tuesday, grieving family members staged a protest outside the Powercom office, joined by representatives of farmer organisations.
Protesters alleged that Powercom failed to secure the required safety permit before initiating repair work, because of which the transformer was live during the task. "Had power supply been shut down, this tragedy could have been averted," a protester said.
The victim had reportedly been working under a private contractor associated with Powercom for the past three years. His family claimed that despite the fatality, no official from Powercom visited them or offered support.

"Not even a phone call—this is how they treat workers who risk their lives daily," said a family member.
Protesters demanded immediate compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the victim's family and refused to allow postmortem till their demands were addressed. "We will not cremate the body till justice is served," said one of the protesters. They also cited the recent death of another lineman, Gagandeep, who died in similar circumstances days ago, raising further questions about the department's safety protocols.
When approached for comment, SDO Gurjinder Singh confirmed that an inquiry had been initiated. "A detailed investigation is underway. Strict action will follow based on the findings," he said. As of the time of reporting, the protest continues, with tensions running high among villagers demanding accountability and support for the bereaved family. MSID:: 121600219 413 |

NIA raids 32 locations across Kashmir; crackdown on Pakistan-backed terror networks intensifies
NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday launched coordinated searches at 32 locations across Jammu and Kashmir in a continued crackdown on Pakistan-backed terror outfits and their offshoots, which have allegedly been conspiring to destabilise the region. According to an official statement, the raids targeted residential premises of hybrid terrorists and overground workers linked to banned organisations like The Resistance Front (TRF), United Liberation Front Jammu & Kashmir (ULFJ&K), Mujahideen Gazwat-ul-Hind (MGH), Jammu & Kashmir Freedom Fighters (JKFF), Kashmir Tigers, and PAAF. These groups are considered offshoots of proscribed outfits such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and Al-Badr. The agency suspects these individuals have been aiding terror infrastructure by facilitating operatives, transporting sticky bombs and IEDs, managing funds, and handling arms, ammunition, and narcotics. The NIA said the Pakistan-based handlers have been using online apps and social media to radicalise youth and coordinate activities, while also deploying drones to drop weapons, explosives, and drugs in the Kashmir Valley. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Encontre voos low-cost Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Undo During Thursday's raids, NIA recovered two live cartridges, a fired bullet head, a bayonet, and multiple digital devices containing incriminating material. Iran 'strongly' condemns US veto of UN Gaza ceasefire resolution
Displaced Palestinians return to retrieve their belongings from their homes in the area where the Israeli army operated in the northern Gaza Strip (AP) TEHRAN: Iran on Thursday denounced the United States on Thursday for vetoing a United Nations Security Council resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire and full humanitarian access in Gaza. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said in a statement that the US move to block the resolution, which was supported by 14 of the 15 members of the council, demonstrated "the country's complicity in the crimes of the Zionist regime (Israel) and strongly condemned it". The draft resolution had demanded "an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties" and the unconditional release of hostages held by Hamas in the war-torn Gaza Strip. It also called for the lifting of all restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the territory. Baqaei said the veto "is not only an explicit affront by the US government to the will of the international community ... but also a sign of the moral decline of American decision-makers" and evidence of Washington's complicity in Israel's killing of Palestinians. Washington's envoy to the UN, Dorothy Shea, said on Wednesday that passing the resolution "would undermine diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire that reflects the realities on the ground and emboldens Hamas," which is backed by Iran. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Tehran, which does not recognise Israel, has framed the Palestinian cause as a central tenet of its foreign policy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
