Air Force tests new ship-killing bomb variant
In a June 4 statement, the service said it dropped a 500-pound version of Quicksink, made from a GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munition, or JDAM, from a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber at Eglin Air Force Base's Gulf Test Range off the coast of Florida. Previous Quicksink tests were conducted with 2,000-pound bombs.
Quicksink is the Air Force Research Laboratory's effort to strengthen its ability to take out enemy ships. This capability would be particularly important in the event of a conflict with China over Taiwan, which would likely involve grueling fighting in the Pacific Ocean and require U.S. forces to destroy Chinese ships.
Previous tests used modified GBU-31 JDAMs to destroy target vessels. Those JDAMs are guided by GPS and use fins to steer towards the target as they fall.
AFRL previously said that it redesigned the JDAM's nose plug to better suit it for maritime strikes. A stock JDAM nose might cause the bomb to carom off the surface of the water in unexpected directions instead of striking its target, AFRL said, but the Quicksink redesign is meant to keep it on target.
Quicksink bombs do not travel under the water towards their target like traditional torpedoes. The Air Force says modifying existing guided bombs into Quicksink weapons would provide anti-ship capability at a lower cost than weapons like torpedoes.
The Air Force said in its statement that the new Quicksink variant would expand the B-2's targeting reach by giving combatant commanders more options for striking enemy targets. AFRL declined to further detail how the 500-pound version provides more targeting options or when the latest test took place, citing security concerns.
'Quicksink offers an affordable, game-changing solution to rapidly and efficiently sink maritime targets,' Col. Dan Lehoski, commander of Eglin's 53rd Wing, said in a statement. 'AFRL's 500-pound Quicksink variant adds options for the warfighter and enhances operational flexibility.'
AFRL said video of the latest test is classified and could not be released. But a previous video posted in 2022 shows a Quicksink bomb streaking towards an empty vessel before exploding, cleaving the ship in half and sending it underwater in a matter of seconds.

AI is already creating a billionaire boom: There are now 498 AI unicorns—and they're worth $2.7 trillion
AI is minting billion-dollar startups faster than the dot-com era, with 100 unicorns born in the last two years, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Scale AI. They join a total of nearly 500 AI companies with valuations of $1 billion or more, according to CB Insights. And the gold rush is far from over. No longer do business leaders need to spend decades building the next big thing to join the ranks of Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos at the top of the billionaires club; they just need to build an AI company. There are now some 498 AI unicorns, or private AI companies, valued at $1 billion or more, with a combined value of $2.7 trillion, according to CB Insights. A complete 100 of them were founded since 2023. There are more than 1,300 AI startups with valuations of over $100 million. Take Mira Murati, the former CTO of OpenAI, for example. Her startup, Thinking Machines Lab, has just closed a $2 billion seed round at a $12 billion valuation. We've not seen a tech boom like this since the late 90s and early 2000s, which propelled many of the tech giants of today, from eBay to Google, into the mainstream. While the dot-com boom can't be directly compared because the 'unicorn' label didn't exist then and billion-dollar private valuations weren't tracked, AI is creating billionaires at a record pace—and could even ring in an era of trillionaires. The AI billionaire boom With a boom in company valuation also comes hefty paydays for its founders, investors, and C-suite. In March, Bloomberg reported that four of the largest private AI companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Safe Superintelligence, and Anysphere, have created at least 15 billionaires with a combined net worth of $38 billion. More than a dozen unicorns have been crowned since then. AI startups are receiving massive investments, resulting in high valuations and wealth for founders and early investors. According to data from Crunchbase, global venture funding in 2024 edged above 2023's totals, with AI showing the biggest leap in amounts year-to-year. For the founders of Anthropic, including CEO Dario Amodei, reports indicate the Claude chatbot maker is in talks to raise $5 billion at a valuation of $170 billion. Amodei's net worth is now over the billion-dollar mark. Also joining the billionaire club is Liang Wenfeng. The founder and CEO of Chinese AI company DeepSeek is likely worth over $1 billion based on the estimated value of the low-cost AI company. And as investments into AI continue to boom, so do the net worths of billionaires working in them. Nvidia's CFO Colette Kress and EVP Jay Puri have become billionaires, joining its CEO Jensen Huang after its market cap surpassed $4 trillion. Similarly, Palantir's first billion-dollar quarter is dramatically increasing the wealth of the company's cofounders and C-suite. Peter Thiel and Alex Karp have each seen their net worth jump by $17 billion collectively. This story was originally featured on Sign in to access your portfolio

Pony AI, Nearing Full-Year Robotaxi Goal, Eyes European Markets
(Bloomberg) -- Pony AI Inc. is confident it will meet its 2025 robotaxi vehicle output target and is actively exploring new markets in Europe, even as the industry's commercialization develops at an uneven pace across different regions. Over 200 of Pony AI's Gen-7 Robotaxi vehicles have been rolled out since mass production started two months ago, putting the firm on track to hit its 1,000 vehicle goal by year-end, the company said. The company was founded in 2016 and started operating robotaxis in Guangzhou in 2018. The Guangzhou-headquartered firm's optimism comes as it eyes new markets in Europe. Road testing is being carried out in Luxembourg via mobility service provider Emile Weber, Peng said. Pony AI is also trialing its technology in South Korea, where it has obtained nationwide permits for robotaxi operations. It has a tie-up with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority, and with Uber Technologies Inc. to deploy self-driving vehicles in the Middle East. 'In a year or two, once the regulations are ready, the local users are on board, then I think those markets will take off dramatically,' Peng said of foreign regions. Earlier in August, Pony AI's rival — Baidu Inc.'s Apollo Go — inked an agreement with US ride-hailing platform Lyft Inc. to deploy robotaxis in Europe, starting with Germany and the UK in 2026, pending regulatory approval. Home Market Chinese regulators' attitude toward autonomous driving technology seems to be warming up, too, despite a public debate that erupted in 2024 over Apollo Go's robotaxi fleet in the central city of Wuhan. Taxi drivers protested the self-driving cars potentially taking their jobs, while residents complained about traffic disruptions. Last month, Shanghai granted licenses to companies including Pony AI and Apollo Go, allowing commercial operations in financial district Pudong. It became the latest Chinese urban center — following Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangzhou — to permit fare-charging robotaxi operations. 'This is a big step for making robotaxis a real business,' Peng said. Pony AI reported second quarter earnings on Tuesday, with robotaxi services revenue climbing 158% to $1.5 million from the same period in 2024, according to a company filing. Peng told an earnings call that the company had 'laid a solid foundation for large-scale commercial robotaxi operation.' Still, the road to scaling hundreds of commercial robotaxis remains challenging. Most countries — other than the US and China — remain unready for large-scale deployment, Chief Financial Officer Leo Wang told the call. The current limitations mean it could take time to develop a sustainable fare-charging business model, he said. 'I would also emphasize that scaling a full driverless robotaxis fleet demands a fundamentally higher level of safety and operation rigor,' he added. 'This leap from dozens to hundreds is a big jump in complexity.'
