Groves wins 20th Tour stage, Pogacar maintains lead

Alpecin rider Kaden Groves won stage 20 of the Tour de France on Saturday after a long-range escape that saw the Australian finish well ahead of the big guns.
Runaway overall race leader Tadej Pogacar maintained his lead over Jonas Vingegaard ahead of Sunday's 21st and final stage in Paris.
The Team UAE rider has a 4min 24sec advantage heading into what could be a tricky finale, a 132km ride from Mantes-la-Ville to the Champs-Elysees, but featuring three ascents of the cobbled streets of Montmartre.
The champion-in-waiting was left shaking his head after almost getting taken down in a fall 500m from the line on Saturday, as lashing rain made the roads hazardous on the run into Pontarlier.
This was a third stage win for Alpecin after Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel took the two opening wins.
"They gave me a free role in the final days," Groves said after both Philipsen and Van der Poel pulled out.
"I'm going to enjoy this one and celebrate with my team and enjoy the Champs tomorrow."
Just 158 riders crossed the rolling hills at the foot of the Jura, and many looked haggard after the fast racing in the Alps.
So along the Swiss border, most of the peloton seemed happy to let an escape get a 7-minute lead after an exhausting slog that started July 5. (AFP)

Reds lose Diaz to Bayern in reported 75m euro deal
Reds lose Diaz to Bayern in reported 75m euro deal Luis Diaz made 148 appearances in all competitions across four seasons at Liverpool, scoring 41 goals and registering 23 assists. File photo: Reuters Bayern Munich have signed Colombian winger Luis Diaz from Liverpool on a four-year contract, the Bundesliga club said on Wednesday. Financial details of the transfer were not revealed but British media reported Bayern paid around 75 million euros for the 28-year-old Colombia international. Diaz's contract with Liverpool ran until June 2027. He moved to the Merseyside club from Portuguese side Porto for around 50 million euros in January 2022. "Three years and a half that I'll treasure forever. I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together," Diaz posted on Instagram. "I have met incredible people, fabulous colleagues, coaches who helped me a lot, and extraordinary fans. Liverpool is, indeed, a special team, and I will keep everyone in my heart... "It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn't lost one of ours in such a tragic way," Diaz added, referring to former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car accident in July. "As I said, and I repeat, I carry everyone with me in my heart, but one of them in particular: Diogo. I will never forget him. We will never forget him. Thank you for everything. YNWA." Diaz made 148 appearances in all competitions across four seasons at Liverpool, scoring 41 goals and registering 23 assists. His best performance in the Premier League came last season, when he helped Liverpool to their record-equalling 20th English top-flight title with 13 goals and seven assists from 36 games. Diaz also helped Liverpool win the FA Cup in 2022 and the League Cup in 2022 and 2024. He primarily played on the left wing at Liverpool and can also be deployed as a striker. "Luis Diaz is an internationally experienced player with enormous quality, great skills and great reliability. He will help our team immediately. We are delighted that we were able to sign him for Bayern," Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said. "Transfers like this work when everything clicks into place. Our fans can look forward to an exceptional player." Diaz is the second Liverpool player to join a German side in this transfer window, after defender Jarell Quansah moved to Bayer Leverkusen in July. (Reuters)

China drawn with North Korea at 2026 Women's Asian Cup China lifted the trophy at the most recent edition of the event in India three years ago. File photo: Reuters Defending champions China have been drawn in the same group as three-time winners North Korea for the 2026 Women's Asian Cup, while powerhouse Japan will take on Vietnam, India and Chinese Taipei. China are gunning for a 10th title and will also face tournament debutants Bangladesh and Uzbekistan in Group B at the showpiece event in Perth, Gold Coast and Sydney from March 1-21 next year. Japan, the highest Fifa-ranked team in the competition at seven, are top seeds in Group C, aiming to add to their 2014 and 2018 triumphs. They will be making their 18th Asian Cup appearance and 16th in a row – both records. Hosts Australia, the 2010 winners, have their work cut out in Group A with 2022 runners-up South Korea, Iran and the Philippines. They will be looking to channel the home support that drove them to the semi-finals at the 2023 World Cup on home soil. The top two sides from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, progress to the quarter-finals, with the top six finishers booking their tickets to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. Ledecky wins 22nd world title with freestyle gold
Ledecky wins 22nd world title with freestyle gold Ledecky's victory moves her closer to Michael Phelps's career tally of 26 world gold medals. Photo: Reuters Katie Ledecky won the 22nd world title of her legendary career to close in on Michael Phelps's record as fellow Olympic champions David Popovici and Kaylee McKeown also struck gold. American great Ledecky cruised to a dominant 1,500m freestyle gold, touching the wall in 15min 26.44sec, having threatened her own world record of 15:20.48. The masterful win in Singapore moved Ledecky four short of the retired Phelps's career tally of 26 world gold medals. "Growing up it was very inspiring to watch world championships, Olympic Games that Michael was in, trying to learn from the very best," said Ledecky, 28. "I was always a student of the sport." Ledecky's win gave the American the sixth world 1,500m freestyle title of her career. She is also a nine-time Olympic gold medallist. Second was Simona Quadarella of Italy in 15:31.79 and third Australia's Lani Pallister in 15:41.18. Ledecky was the red-hot favourite going into the race, having qualified for the final over 10 seconds faster than nearest challenger Pallister. She also went into the race owning the top 24 1,500m freestyle times ever, and set the second-fastest time in history in April behind her own record. Pallister pushed her with a fast early tempo and Ledecky was on world record pace until late in the race. In the end she fell short of the mark but still clocked the fifth-fastest time ever. "Lani took it out there. I knew she would be out fast and I just wanted to get out fast, but comfortable enough that I could go from there," said Ledecky. "I'm happy with the time and happy with the swim." It is Ledecky's first gold medal of the championships, after picking up a bronze behind Summer McIntosh in the 400m freestyle on Sunday's opening night in Singapore. Ledecky is set to go head-to-head with Canadian phenomenon McIntosh again in the 800m freestyle. Popovici claimed a thrilling 200m freestyle gold – then revealed he had very nearly pulled out. The 20-year-old Romanian reeled in US rival Luke Hobson to take the title in 1:43.53, with Hobson settling for silver (1:43.84) and Japan's 18-year-old Tatsuya Murasa taking bronze (1:44.54). Popovici said afterwards that he had seriously considered withdrawing from the competition before it started, even going as far as looking at flights home. "It was a mental thing and it had to do with the fear of seeing my real potential," said Popovici, who reclaimed his world crown from 2022. "That's very scary. And so I'm really glad I didn't quit."
