The real cause of French football hooliganism

Soon after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) thrashed Inter Milan five-nil to win the Champions League, Ousmane Dembélé urged fans not to go wild. 'Let's celebrate but without breaking everything in Paris,' said the PSG striker. His plea fell on deaf ears. Two have died, shops were looted, bus stops vandalised, cars torched and police attacked as Paris succumbed to an orgy of violence. The worst of the rioting was on the Champs-Élysées, where police come under fire from projectiles, including fireworks, and dozens of arrests were made. In total, 563 people were detained and the Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau labelled them 'barbarians… who had come to commit crimes and provoke the forces of order.' He was criticised by his political opponents. The National Rally described what should have been an evening of joyous celebration as a 'fiasco' with Jordan Bardella accusing Retailleau of being unprepared for the riots.

Watch: Neymar sent off for ‘Hand of God' handball

Neymar was sent off in what could be his final appearance for boyhood club Santos after trying to emulate Argentine great Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' by punching the ball into the goal. The Brazil international has spoken about the impact Maradona had on his career after meeting him as a child with the pair pictured together before the Argentina icon's death five years ago. However, the inspiration taken by Neymar appeared to backfire when he appeared to intentionally cheat by scoring with his hand in Santos' Brazilian league game with Botafogo. The match was locked at 0-0 in the 76th minute when Neymar tried to pounce on a rebound under pressure from Botafogo defender David Ricardo. In an effort to get to the ball first, the 33-year-old Brazilian threw his arm towards the ball and punched it goalwards, before being kicked in the head by Ricardo's leading foot. Neymar collapsed to the turf in the goalmouth as team-mates celebrated, but the Botafogo players were furious and quickly protested to the referee that the goal had been scored by a handball. After several minutes of treatment, Neymar got back to his feet and was shown a yellow card by referee Davi de Olivereira Lacerda. But having already been booked in first-half injury time, Neymar was given his marching orders as he was sent off in what could be his last outing for Santos. With the Brazilian league now on hold until mid-July because of the international break and inaugural Club World Cup, Neymar's contract will expire at the end of June and a move to another club could be on the horizon. He was quick to hold his hands up and take the blame for the sending off, with matters not helped by the fact that Botafogo went on to score a winner after his dismissal through Artur's 86th-minute effort. 'I made a mistake, forgive me!' he posted on social media. 'Today, if I hadn't been sent off, I'm sure we would have gotten the three points. You can count these three points against me!' Neymar has only started the one match for Santos since returning from injury last month, having rejoined the club from Saudi Arabia side Al-Hilal - having suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury, and the suspension will rule him out of Santos's match against Fortaleza on Thursday before the mid-season break kicks in. Santos are 18th in the league having lost seven of their 11 matches.

Anti-EU football hooligan ‘pimp' Karol Nawrocki wins Poland's presidential election after knife-edge vote

ANTI-EU football hooligan "pimp" Karol Nawrocki has won Poland's presidential election. According to the final result from the electoral commission, right-wing historian with a past of football hooliganism Nawrocki, 42, won the election with a slim 50.89% of the votes. 2 Just six months ago, Nawrocki was a fairly unknown name - but in the run up to the election, the historian posted videos of himself at shooting ranges and boxing rings - cultivating a tough-guy image for voters. While his liberal opponent Rafal Trzaskowski played up his European credentials, Nawrocki met Donald Trump at the White House and received the US President's backing. Unlike other eurosceptics in central Europe like Hungary's Viktor Orban, Nawrocki supports giving military aid to help Ukraine in the bloody war with Russia. But he also revealed prior to his win that he will oppose membership in Western alliances for Ukraine. This view aligns with the falling support among Poles for Ukrainians, with the country having hosted more than a million refugees from across the border. His backers in the Law and Justice (PiS) party had supported fast-tracking membership in the EU and NATO for Kyiv while in power until late 2023. Nawrocki's critics said he was fuelling unease over Ukrainian refugees at a time when the far-right is highlighting migration, the cost of living and security. He cited his campaign slogan, Poland First. "Let's help others, but let's take care of our own citizens first," he said on social media in April. Nawrocki's past has been a topic of intense public debate following a series of negative media coverage. Robert Prevost elected as Pope Leo XIV - the first from North American There were questions over his acquisition of a flat from a pensioner -and even an admission that he took part in orchestrated brawls. Nawrocki, an amateur boxer, told a debate when confronted over reports he had been involved in mass organised fights between football hooligans: "All my sports activities were based on the strength of my heart, the strength of my muscles, my fists. "It was a fair competition, regardless of the form." His Law and Justice party backers have accused the government of orchestrating the controversies with the help of Poland's special services and liberal media. Nawrocki portrayed the election as a referendum on the government, which he described as a metropolitan elite out of touch with their concerns. "I am simply one of you," he told voters in the eastern town of Biala Podlaska while on the campaign trail. .
