Here's what's inside Meta's experimental new smart glasses
Meta has revealed more information about Aria Gen 2, its experimental smart glasses designed to serve as a test platform for research about augmented reality, AI, and robotics. The glasses pack several improvements into their lightweight frame that could one day translate into consumer products, including an improved eye-tracking system that can track gaze per eye, detect blinks, and estimate the center of pupils.
'These advanced signals enable a deeper understanding of the wearer's visual attention and intentions, unlocking new possibilities for human-computer interaction,' Meta writes. Meta initially announced Aria Gen 2 in February, saying they will 'pave the way for future innovations that will shape the next computing platform.' They build upon Meta's first iteration of the glasses in 2020, which were similarly available for researchers only.
Along with an improved eye-tracking system, Aria Gen 2 comes with four computer vision cameras that Meta says enable 3D hand and object tracking. Meta says researchers can use this information to enable highly precise tasks like 'dexterous robot hand manipulation.'
The glasses also have a photoplethysmography sensor built into the nosepad, which allows the device to estimate a wearer's heart rate, along with a contact microphone that Meta says provides better audio in loud environments. There's a new ambient light sensor as well, allowing the glasses to differentiate between indoor and outdoor lighting.
The Aria Gen 2 glasses include folding arms for the first time, weigh around 75 grams, and come in eight different sizes. Meta plans on opening applications for researchers to work with Aria Gen 2 later this year. The initiative builds on the successful development of Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses, a form factor it aims to expand with its Orion augmented-reality glasses, a rumored partnership with Oakley, and a high-end pair of 'Hypernova' glasses with a built-in screen.

The outlet adds that this would let users 'surface relevant actions or data' from said apps. That would be major news as the Control Center on Apple Watches only supports first-party toggles like cellular functionality, the flashlight, Wi-Fi, and battery-related info. We really hope Google copies this feature and brings it to Wear OS smartwatches in the future. Android phones have long supported third-party tiles in Quick Settings, allowing users to quickly toggle their VPN service, activate Link to Windows, identify songs, and more. So bringing this feature to smartwatches seems like a logical expansion. It's likely too late for this feature to come to Wear OS 6, but the upcoming update still has some notable improvements. Finland's AIATELLA secures funds for AI cardiovascular imaging solutions
Finnish startup AIATELLA has raised €2m ($2.27m) in financing to develop and scale its cardiovascular imaging technology powered by AI. The investment will support the company in conducting clinical trials and further developing its ultrasound-based preventative screening tool, which can identify and quantify carotid artery narrowing within minutes. Nordic Science Investments spearheaded the funding round, with contributions from Specialist VC, Business Finland, and Harjavalta Ventures, among other investors. The Automated Image Measurement technology of the startup leverages images from ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging to analyse vascular imaging. This multimodal technology identifies abnormalities and quantifies changes over time in those at risk. It significantly reduces the time specialists spend on manual image measurements and documentation. As a result, clinicians can dedicate more time to patient care. AIATELLA is currently navigating the medical approval processes in several European and North American countries, including France, the US, and the UK. AIATELLA co-founder and CEO Jack Parker said: 'Our technology helps medical professionals analyse imaging much more efficiently, and at an earlier stage, so patients can get help before it's too late.' Initially applied to the aorta artery, AIATELLA's vision extends to encompass all blood vessels in the body with its technology. The startup noted that it is also developing a portable ultrasound-based screening technology for mass screening of individuals prior to the occurrence of symptoms. This approach aims to facilitate early detection of cardiovascular diseases, which are a major cause of mortality worldwide. The technology has already been employed in the UK and Finland at screening events, where it has helped identify potentially at-risk individuals. AIATELLA also aims to gather data on the presentation and progression of cardiovascular conditions across different sexes and ethnicities, as symptoms can vary widely among these different groups.
