NA panel concerned over Moavineen-e-Hujjaj's selection process
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony on Friday expressed its concern regarding the selection process of Moavineen-e-Hujjaj and discussed its drawbacks in detail.
The meeting, held under the Chairmanship of Malik Muhammad Aamir Dogar in the Parliament House, directed the ministry to submit the NTS exam paper, the list of selected Moavineen, and details of the selection process in other Muslim countries at the next committee meeting.
The committee members urged the ministry to closely review the current process and eliminate unnecessary obstacles for Moavineen who wish to serve pilgrims with a religious spirit.
They emphasized the need for the ministry to adopt a more practical selection process from the next year instead of relying on NTS, which imposes a high-test fee and other expenses.
They recommended that the ministry arrange proper training courses for the selected candidates in accordance with Hajj Ta'leemaat.
The committee reviewed the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) of the ministry for the financial year 2025-2026.
Additional Secretary, Dr. Syed Atta-ur-Rehman informed the committee that the ministry's various wings and all Haji Camps are in the process of preparing proposals for new projects. Once finalized, these proposals will be presented before the committee.
He briefed the committee on ongoing project – the construction of the Hajj Complex in Lahore.

PTI rejects Economic Survey as 'IMF script'
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Monday blasted the government's Economic Survey, accusing it of misrepresenting indicators and delivering a budget shaped entirely by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Leader of the Opposition Omar Ayub, PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram and PTI MNA Mubeen Arif Jutt held a joint press conference at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House. Citing media reports, the opposition leaders claimed that the number of people living below the poverty line has surged to 45 per cent, up from 35 per cent, with approximately 30 million people now classified as impoverished. "This entire budget has been handed down by the IMF this Economic Survey is basically a Form 47 document," Omar Ayub alleged, referring to the controversial election form and manipulated figures in the February 8 general elections. "Pakistan's purchasing power has collapsed. In 2022, someone earning Rs50,000 now effectively earns Rs22,000." Ayub further claimed that wheat prices have risen by 50 per cent over the last three years, citing comparisons from the Bureau of Statistics' two-year datasets. "Poverty has reached 44.7 per cent. Planning budget worth 80 per cent remained unutilised and lapsed." "And we need to ask: Has the number of four-legged donkeys increased or the two-legged ones?" Addressing the media, Sheikh Waqas Akram lambasted the government's performance. He said the poor have been rattled to their bones, adding that reports reveal that the poverty has jumped from 35 to 45 per cent. "There was no earthquake or natural disaster in these three years that could explain the collapse in agriculture, and yet it has tanked." He noted that 37 per cent of the population is linked to agriculture, and "their backs have been broken". Waqas also recalled a moment from an NFC meeting, where Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's provincial finance minister reportedly asked how electricity growth was being calculated. "The reply? They are counting electricity generated from solar panels installed on people's rooftops over which the government has no control." "Inflation hasn't eased. For the first time, 30 per cent of livestock remained unsold during Eid. In the last three years, three million people have left the country. When we left government, the debt stood at Rs43,500 billion. Since then, another Rs31,500 billion has been borrowed." "This budget is not the government's it is dictated by the IMF. This Economic Survey is Form 47, not reality." PTI MNA Mubeen Arif Jutt, also speaking at the presser, referred to the comment by the finance minister suggesting that the policy rate should be halved. "If the government is serious about revival, it must take responsibility instead of relying on window dressing," he said.

COAS spends Eid day at the frontline
Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir visited forward positions along the Line of Control (LoC) to celebrate Eidul Azha with frontline troops, a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said. The visit commenced with Eid prayers, during which special supplications were made for Pakistan's enduring peace, stability, and prosperity as well as for shuhda who made supreme sacrifice for the defence of their motherland. Extending warm Eid greetings to the officers and men, the Field Marshal commended their unwavering commitment, professional excellence, and steadfast service in the face of persistent challenges, the ISPR statement said. The COAS noted that celebrating Eid on the frontline away from their families serves the superior national purpose of defending the motherland at all costs throughout the year, the statement added. The COAS lauded the formation's exemplary performance during Marqa-e-Haq, Operation Bunyaanum Marsoos and paid solemn tribute to the martyrs and Ghazis whose sacrifices continue to fortify the nation's security and resolve. "You have befittingly avenged the loss of lives of innocent Pakistani civilians including children, women and elderly through your bold and effective response" the ISPR statement quoted the COAS as saying. While interacting with troops, the army chief expressed deep appreciation for their high morale, exceptional operational readiness, and resolute vigilance in responding effectively to Indian ceasefire violations. He reiterated complete confidence in the battle preparedness of the armed forces to decisively deter and defeat any act of aggression, the statement added. Underscoring Pakistan's principled stance, the Field Marshal affirmed that the just and valiant struggle of the Kashmiri people against Indian occupation will never be forgotten. He emphasized the need for the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in line with the aspirations of its people and the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions. Upon arrival at the LoC, the COAS was received by the Commander, Rawalpindi Corps.

President urges efforts to strengthen economy
President Asif Zardari on Monday, citing the country's vast potential for development, called for concerted efforts to build a robust and self-reliant national economy. The president, in a meeting with Pakistan Peoples Party leaders and workers at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on the occasion of Eid ul-Azha, extended Eid greetings to them. He praised the workers as the strength of the party, acknowledging their steadfast support during challenging times. He urged them to remain dedicated to the nation and contribute to its progress. He also called for working together for the country's development and prosperity. He highlighted agriculture as the cornerstone of the national economy, stressing the need to prioritize its growth and support farmers to strengthen economic foundations. India's extremist Hindutva ideology poses threats to the entire region, he added. He also underscored the deep historical, religious, and cultural roots of Muslims in the subcontinent.
