Unifor mourns the loss of Buzz Hargrove, tireless champion of workers' rights
TORONTO, June 15, 2025 /CNW/ - Unifor is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Basil "Buzz" Hargrove, a beloved and iconic figure in Canada's labour movement. As National President of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) from 1992 until his retirement in 2008, Buzz was a tireless advocate for working people and a deeply respected leader whose impact will be felt for generations. "Buzz Hargrove was a giant in the Canadian labour movement," said Unifor National President Lana Payne. "He never forgot where he came from—and he carried that working-class spirit with him into every boardroom, bargaining session, and public forum. His passion, his intellect, and his uncompromising belief in justice for working people shaped the labour movement we know today." The CAW, alongside the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP), merged in 2013 to form Unifor—now the country's largest private sector union. Hargrove's legacy lives on in the foundation and spirit of the union he helped shape. Born in Bath, New Brunswick in 1944, he grew up in a family of ten children and credited his upbringing with helping to shape his social conscience. Hargrove began his working life on the shop floor of Chrysler's Windsor Assembly Plant. From those early days making seat cushions and serving as a shop steward, he rose through the ranks of the labour movement, helping to build and lead a proudly independent Canadian union voice. Hargrove played a central role in the CAW's historic break from the UAW in 1985 and the creation of an autonomous Canadian union that put workers' needs first. As President, he led negotiations with major employers—including General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Air Canada, and CN Rail—securing gains that elevated standards across sectors. A committed social unionist, Hargrove pushed the CAW to fight not only for better wages and working conditions, but also for broader social justice issues including public health care, retirement security, equity, and fair trade. "Buzz showed us what it means to fight with heart and with strategy," added Payne. "He was never afraid to challenge the powerful, and he understood that real change requires both courage and collective strength. We owe him a debt of gratitude for everything he did to build a fairer Canada." In recognition of his many contributions, Hargrove received numerous honorary doctorates from Canadian universities and was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2008. Following his retirement, he remained an active voice for labour, including as Director of The Centre for Labour Management Relations at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson). "Buzz was tenacious and a great leader who inspired generations of union activists. What many might not know is his patience and generosity in sharing his many skills and knowledge with others. As National President of Unifor I was one of the many who benefitted from his legacy and his friendship," said Payne. "Our union has lost an extraordinary champion. His memory will live on in the work we do every day to fight for justice, fairness, and dignity for all workers." G7 world leaders arrive in Alberta amid Middle East crisis and global tariff uncertainty
BANFF, Alta. — The heads of the world's richest economies are converging on Alberta today for one of the most high-stakes G7 meetings in recent memory amid a U.S.-led global tariff war and the growing crisis in the Middle East. On many of the G7's key issues — namely the global trade war and Israel's military operations in Gaza — Trump and the rest of the G7 leaders are largely on opposite sides. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's job as chair of the summit in Kananaskis, Alta., is to mediate discussions to make sure the tense alliance doesn't blow up. And that job has never been so complicated, G7 observers say. On top of global issues such as Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, ongoing Israeli military campaigns in Gaza and now Iran and the U.S.-led reshaping of global trade via sweeping tariffs, Carney will have to contend with the volatility and unpredictability of American President Donald Trump. According to a schedule published by Carney's office Sunday, the prime minister will meet Trump during a bilateral on Monday morning. It will be the first tête-à-tête between both men since Carney travelled to Washington last month. On many issues including trade and the Israel-Hamas war, the G7 summit is like a game of tug-of-war. Pulling on one side are the leaders of the U.K., France, Italy, Japan and Germany, and pulling on the opposite side is Trump, with Carney in the middle of the rope trying to keep it from ripping. The fact that the longtime Iran-Israel conflict has pivoted from proxy wars to full-on conventional war in the last few days makes Carney's job even more difficult. 'It makes the already very difficult job of Prime Minister Carney to manage the G7 even more difficult. It adds another layer of risk and complexity,' said Thomas Juneau, a national security researcher and professor at the University of Ottawa. Seven non-member countries also attending the G7 from the sidelines: Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea and Ukraine. Delegations from NATO, the UN and the World Bank will also be present. On the eve of the summit, Carney had a first G7 bilateral with U.K. Prime Minister Kier Starmer during which the men dined and then watched the Edmonton Oilers play the Florida Panthers. Before travelling to Kananaskis on Sunday, both leaders put out a press release promising to boost bilateral trade and increase collaboration in artificial intelligence, defence, intelligence sharing, quantum, critical mineral development and military cooperation. Carney's schedule Sunday showed he will be hosting bilateral meetings with the leaders of all those countries except South Korea and the World Bank. Those meetings will allow Carney to hammer out the final details of new partnerships or iron out irritants in each relationship without Trump in the room. Though there have been tensions between G7 members going into a summit in the past, never has the volatility of a U.S. president so risked blowing up the entire meeting agenda, he said. During the last G7 on Canadian soil in 2018, Trump and the U.S. had initially agreed to sign on to the final joint statement, only to pull out in spectacular fashion via a post on social media lobbed from Air Force One calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau 'dishonest and weak' over criticism of American tariffs. Juneau and other observers interviewed by National Post say that volatility has only increased in Trump's second mandate, increasing the risk of implosion of the 52-year-old alliance. 'It just adds another major level of risk for Prime Minister Carney to manage this in a way that it doesn't blow up,' Juneau said. 'Carney is not an experience politician, but he's a very experienced, knowledgeable, skillful individual, and that makes a difference.' But absent the discussions will be leaders from Middle Eastern countries. Canada invited the heads of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but both leaders declined last week. The leaders' meetings will cover global economic outlook, economic growth, security, public safety, energy security and the Ukraine-Russia war. But likely to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's dismay, the growing crisis in the Middle East will likely infringe on discussions on Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. 'There will be a focus on Ukraine in terms of the international security part, but there will be, of course, a discussion on Gaza that has now expanded,' said a former government official with extensive experience organizing international summits. Carney, Starmer to agree to renew Canada-U.K. trade talks, 'deepen' relationship
The U.K. will seek to restart trade negotiations with Canada, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, as he strives to strengthen commercial ties around the world to better insulate Britain's economy from the fallout of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff war. Article content 'The world is changing on trade and the economy,' Starmer told reporters on Saturday on his way to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. 'That means we need to do more securing our base at home and turbo-charging what we are doing on the cost of living and at the same time reducing trade barriers with other countries.' Article content Article content Article content Starmer and Carney agreed to establish a new working group to 'deepen our existing trading relationship,' with a deadline to report back in six months, according to a joint statement by the leaders Sunday. The group will be asked to deal with market access questions, and explore ways to cooperate on critical minerals and artificial intelligence. Article content Article content While the two nations reached a trade continuity deal in the wake of the U.K.'s departure from the European Union, talks for a bespoke deal to cover bilateral trade worth an annual £27.5 billion (CAD$37 billion) stalled last year after a dispute over beef, when neither Starmer nor Carney was yet in office. Article content Both nations are also members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, known as CPTPP. Carney agreed his government will aim to introduce legislation this year to ratify the U.K.'s accession into that trade deal — a move that would lower tariffs between the countries. Article content Article content Starmer will use the G-7 summit to argue that in a shifting global economy, the U.K. must retain its proud status as a free and open trading nation by strengthening existing alliances while reducing barriers to trade with other countries, his office said. Article content Article content A trade deal with Canada was not listed as a priority for the U.K. government last year, when Trade Minister Douglas Alexander named agreements with the Gulf Cooperation Council, India, Israel, the Republic of Korea, Switzerland, and Turkey as the areas his department was focusing on. But Trump's return to the White House and his ratcheting up of tariffs against countries around the world has forced UK negotiators to recalibrate — seeking exemptions from the U.S. levies while also casting a wider net in their search for new deals. Article content Article content Canada was the 13th biggest destination for U.K. exports in 2024, taking in £16.9 billion ($31.3 billion) of British goods and services, according to U.K. statistics. It was the 17th biggest source of imports into Britain, with goods and services worth £10.6 billion ($19.6 billion) crossing the Atlantic.
