Chong Wei: Jonassen needs time to improve singles squad

GEORGE TOWN: National badminton legend Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei believes national coaching director Kenneth Jonassen needs ample time to bring change to the country's singles squad.
Lee said the Danish coach had solid plans but required space to adapt to the local culture in his efforts to build a strong line-up of backup players.
"I have met with him myself. We discuss how we can help the main men's singles players. He has really good ideas, but we must give him time, not a month, not a year, we need to give him at least one term.
"One term is around four years. Only then he can implement his plans and deliver the results we hope for. After all, he has only been here for less than six months.
"It is like a newborn baby. You cannot expect it to walk right away. It takes about a year. So how can we expect a world champion to be produced so quickly?" he asked.
He told newsmen after being conferred the Darjah Gemilang Pangkuan Negeri (DGPN), which carries the title Datuk Seri, during the investiture ceremony held in conjunction with the 84th birthday of the Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, here today.
Commenting further, Lee acknowledged that the current performance of the national men's singles players was worrying, as they lagged significantly behind the world's top players.
"We have Lee Zii Jia, who is just recovering from injury, and we also have Ng Tze Yong, but he is currently undergoing surgery in Doha, Qatar. Hopefully, he recovers quickly and comes back stronger.
"Their performances still look unstable, and the same goes for Leong Jun Hao, who has been like a roller coaster - up and down," he added.
Previously, former national coach Wong Tat Meng had warned that Malaysia risked facing a singles crisis if immediate action was not taken to address the fragility in the country's youth development system.
His stern warning came after all national representatives were eliminated in the quarter-final stage of the individual events at the 2025 Asian Junior Badminton Championships last Sunday.
However, Lee remained hopeful that the country's backup squad could bounce back in time for next year's World Junior Championships, with his former coach, Datuk Tey Seu Bock, also set to assist the team.
"But they need to catch up quickly because the situation is different from the senior players, who can afford to wait four years. We hope to see better results at the World Junior Championships next year," he said.
Earlier, Lee, who was born in Parit Buntar, Perak, and raised in Bukit Mertajam, described the state award as deeply meaningful and a source of motivation for him to continue contributing and sharing his experience in the national badminton scene.

The initiative aims to extend road safety education to students and rural communities, with the goal of cultivating more courteous and responsible road users. 'And under the Sarawak Road Safety Council, which I chair, we are committed to reducing road accidents across the state. We want everyone to be safe on our roads,' said Lee during the Sarawak Traffic Games 2025, held at Rejang Park Traffic Garden here yesterday. He emphasised the need for collaboration from all government agencies and the community to make this initiative a success. 'With the roll-out of the Sarawak Traffic Games, students can become ambassadors who understand and promote traffic rules,' he added. The event saw participation from nine local primary and secondary schools, including SK St Mary, SJKC Taman Rajang, SJKC Tung Hua, SK Perbandaran Sibu No.4, SMK Methodist, SMK Sungai Merah, SMK Bandar Sibu, SMK Tung Hua, and SMK Chung Hua Sibu. Lee encouraged all schools in Sibu to join the next edition of the Games, where the top five teams will qualify for the final competition. This year, 52 schools participated in the public speaking component of the Sarawak Traffic Games by submitting videos between July 8 and July 16. 'This legacy has been successfully revived and rebranded in 2024 as the Sarawak Traffic Games, under the full implementation of the Ministry of Transport Sarawak,' said Lee. The programme officially resumed in Miri in November 2024 and has since been held in Sarikei, Kuching, and now in Sibu. Future editions are scheduled for Sri Aman and Bintulu. Lee highlighted that the Rejang Park Traffic Garden, built over 30 years ago, plays a central role in hosting the Games in Sibu. 'My Ministry has helped upgrade the traffic garden with an allocation of RM350,000,' he noted. Rejang Park is among six traffic gardens in Sarawak, alongside those in Kuching, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Bintulu, and Miri, which have received special funding to remain safe and effective learning spaces for students. Acting Sibu Resident Christopher Ranggau Unting expressed hope that the Sarawak Traffic Games would be institutionalised as an annual event, offering early and informal education on road safety and civic ethics to schoolchildren. The event was attended by deputy Transport Minister (Aviation and Road) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil; Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng; Senator Robert Lau; Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak director Norizan Jili; Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili; Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting and his deputy Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley; and Sibu Rural District Council Environment and Public Health Standing Committee Chairman Cr Kevin Lau. Justin smiles after rediscovering form at Macau Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Justin Hoh may have fallen short in the Macau Open final, but the men's singles shuttler was all smiles after rediscovering form following a rough patch in North America. The 21-year-old bounced back impressively in Macau after early exits at the US and Canada Opens — both Super 300 tournaments — last month. He crashed out in the second round in the US and suffered a first-round defeat in Canada. However, a timely chat with national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen and coach K. Yogendran upon returning home proved pivotal. It helped the world No. 45 regroup and reach his maiden Super 300 final. "I'm really pleased — this was my first Super 300 final," said Justin. "The discussion with Kenneth and Yogendran after the US and Canada Opens was a step in the right direction. We needed clarity and a better plan to improve my performance." Justin, however, was visibly unsettled in Sunday's final, played under bizarre circumstances at the Macau East Asian Games Dome. A leaking roof and slippery court affected his focus and heightened his fear of injury. He was soundly beaten 21-15, 21-5 by Indonesia's world No. 25 Alwi Farhan. Despite the defeat, Justin took plenty of positives from the tournament. "I've learnt to be more patient. I still need to sharpen my skills and match strategy," he added. Next on the agenda is a valuable stint in Europe. Justin will join world No. 24 Leong Jun Hao and women's No. 41 K. Letshanaa in a training camp with the Danish national team in Copenhagen from August 18-22, ahead of the World Championships in Paris (Aug 25-31).
