The group includes eight uncapped players, while previously injured Lood de Jager and often overlooked Jean-Luc du Preez are also in the mix.
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has invited a number of uncapped players, including a Varsity Cup star, to the team's second alignment camp of the season, to be held in Cape and online, at the end of this month.
In total 54 players have been 'called up' including Northampton Saints' No 8 Juarno Augustus, Sharks loose forward Vincent Tshituka and UCT Varsity Cup wing Ntokozo Makhaza.
The camps will take place on May 22 and 23. Thirty-six players will attend the in-person camp, with 18 players currently plying their trade abroad in Japan and the northern hemisphere joining virtually, training schedule permitting.
Augustus, who previously ran out for the Stormers and Western Province, was named the World Rugby U20 Player of the Year in 2017 after featuring for the Junior Boks in the tournament in Georgia, while Congo-born Tshituka recently received his South African ID, clearing him to represent South Africa.
Makhaza, meanwhile, will join the Cheetahs for the Currie Cup, after being named 2024 Varsity Cup Player of the Tournament.
The group includes eight uncapped players – Augustus, Tshituka, Makhaza, Renzo du Plessis, Neethling Fouche, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Marnus van der Merwe and Cobus Wiese.
Five players, meanwhile, were not considered for the alignment camp due to injuries, namely Frans Malherbe, Elrigh Louw, Ben-Jason Dixon, Deon Fourie, and Trevor Nyakane.

'Strong statement'
'This is an exciting bunch of players who have all made their mark in their respective competitions this season, and we are thrilled to invite a few talented new players to the camp,' said Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus.
'They have all made a strong statement in big competitions under immense pressure at times, so we are looking forward to working with them.
'It's always difficult to reduce the size of the squad with the abundance of talent in South African rugby, but we were limited in the number of players we could select for the camp, and we are confident that we have sufficient cover in all positions within this group.'

We got lucky at times, says Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt after beating Springboks

'I've coached enough teams where you get a very rapid start, and it can sometimes cause a bit of a lapse in effort and concentration,' Schmidt said. 'I think the Boks just gave us a little bit of belief. I think we won the second quarter 5–0, so we had a little win there, and that gave a little bit of confidence.' It was the Wallabies' first win at Ellis Park since 1963 and their first on the Highveld since 2010. The Wallabies soaked up a 22-0 deficit to charge home in the second half, scoring six tries, with several of them interception gifts from the Springboks. Magnanimous Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt had the good grace to say that the 38–22 scoreline at Ellis Park was not a true reflection of the closeness of the game. The Boks played too loosely, and two tries were gifted to the Wallabies thanks to poor passing, while the South African lineout also began to creak. At the same time, the Wallabies stepped up their work at the breakdown, with Player of the Match Fraser McReight winning crucial turnovers. 'The game was probably closer than the score dictates in that we scored a couple of tries when they looked very dangerous. And we got them on the break,' Schmidt said. 'There were a couple of desperate tackles where guys were diving to just get a foot, or get a half jersey. We are realistic about just how good they are, and sometimes you just get a bit of luck.' Schmidt is expecting backlash from a more efficient Bok team next week in Cape Town. 'To be honest, as well as Fraser did and as well as the other players did, we were probably a little bit lucky. Because Pieter-Steph at one stage went to pick-and-go, and he just knocked it on with the tryline in front of him. And there were a couple of uncharacteristic errors from the Springboks, where next week, if they pick-and-go there, and he's such a powerful and athletic man, he will be a handful. 'The reality is that for us is we know we know we were under pressure and we know that pressure is coming.'

We were dog s*** on the day, says embarrassed Springbok coach Erasmus after Wallabies disaster

Coach Rassie Erasmus admitted the Springboks lost their way after a flying start at Ellis Park, as the Wallabies stormed back to claim a famous win. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix I'm not sure if Rassie Erasmus is familiar with the poetry of Robbie Burns, but he will grasp the drift of the famous line: 'The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.' That is precisely what happened at Ellis Park over the weekend, where the plan the Boks produced from a three-week training camp yielded 22 wonderful points in 20 minutes, only for the scoring spree to give way to 38 unanswered points as the Wallabies roared home in the second half. It appeared that the Boks were lured into Barbarians-style rugby and forgot that Test matches are won by first doing the hard yards. In short, they departed from their DNA of physicality, territorial kicking and set-piece dominance, and instead did an impersonation of the Blitzboks. Video Player is loading. Coach Rassie Erasmus said he, as head coach, would take the performance on the chin. 'This is probably one of the most embarrassing press conferences I've done in a while,' he said. 'We gave them one or two soft tries – an intercept here from a Manie Libbok pass, a pass from André Esterhuizen that went to them, and that let them back into the game. 'It wasn't just tactical – they also physically dominated us. The longer the game went on, the stronger they got. At altitude, that's supposed to be us. It shows what (Wallabies coach) Joe Schmidt is building there.' Erasmus admitted the Boks drifted badly off course after a stunning opening quarter. 'Grant Williams had so many breaks, Manie had so many breaks, Edwill van der Merwe, too. That changes games, but you also have to realise somewhere in the game that it's not quite coming off. 'Their kick-to-ruck ratio was excellent – we only kicked nine times in the second half. Maybe the players felt there was space, but that's coaching, that's on us. We must still build the innings. Twenty-two nil is not winning a game – we ended up losing by almost 20 points. 'The saddest thing is five log points for them, and we didn't even fight back to take the bonus point away. So we're on zero, they're on five. I can butter this up to sound cool and respectful, but we were really dog s**t on the day.' Erasmus said the coaching staff would first look at themselves before blaming the players. 'We have to look first at ourselves before we point fingers at the players. From now until next Saturday, we'll take a lot of flak, but, to be fair, we take the credit when we're doing well, so we must take the flak when we're doing badly. We're very disappointed, feeling bad for our supporters and our players. 'A player doesn't just do what he wants out there; we guide them and we pick the combinations. If it doesn't work, maybe the combinations were wrong, maybe the plans were wrong, maybe the half-time talk was terrible.' Erasmus added that changes are likely for next week's return Test in Cape Town. 'We had already picked next week's team, but that will probably change a little bit because we want to get Ethan Hooker in, we want to give Canan Moodie a start, and we want to give Morne van den Berg a start. We'll have to rethink it.'
