‘Geordie Shore' put Newcastle on map for Herman Ese'ese ahead of Magic Weekend

Independent28-04-2025

Hull FC prop Herman Ese'ese admitted most of his knowledge about Newcastle stems from television series Geordie Shore as he prepares for his first Super League Magic Weekend on Tyneside.
The Black and Whites are in action at St James' Park when they come up against Huddersfield on Sunday.
New Zealander Ese'ese joined Hull at the start of 2024 and has only ever competed at Magic Weekend at Elland Road in Leeds, but is relishing the opportunity to play in Newcastle, a city he knows from the MTV reality show.
The 30-year-old told PA news agency: 'To be honest, I haven't really heard much about Newcastle.
'I know Newcastle because I used to watch Geordie Shore – I know that's pretty bad! That's the only time I've heard about Newcastle.
'I know their football team, I'm a big football fan and they've been going really well. I've been watching some of their games. The games that they play here, it looks hectic and it looks like a nice atmosphere to play in.
'Hopefully we get a sold-out crowd on Sunday at this beautiful stadium. It's my first one in Newcastle. My first season last year was at Leeds, so I got to miss out playing here, but I'm really excited.'
Hull will be aiming for a more enjoyable Magic Weekend experience compared to last year's outing in Leeds, where they lost 29-4 to London Broncos in a wooden-spoon battle.
Eight months later and Hull, under new head coach John Cartwright, are sat in fourth.
Ese'ese believes a change in coaching staff and new faces in the dressing room has been beneficial.
'What stands out for me is the professionalism. We brought in coaching staff and they know how to build a winning culture,' he said.
'We brought in some senior players – experienced players – that have won a lot in their career and are good role models for our young boys.
'We have a young team so it's good for them to learn from them. When you bring those kind of people in, you tend to win more games and start building a winning culture and building connections within the squad as well.'
Ese'ese has continued to impress this season, scoring four tries, and he praised the consistency within the team.
'There's been comments made about how we've been playing, we're a more resilient team now going into the season,' Ese'ese added.
'It's just the team, we don't want to let each other down. We're playing consistent footy, our structure has changed as well. I think our defensive game has definitely improved a lot.
'When you bring in someone like Andy Last, who's a really high-rated coach, he's taken control of our defence.
'We're an all-round team this season. There is a reason why teams wouldn't want to face us.'

Newcastle ready to kickstart summer window with bid for £30m Premier League star

Newcastle United are keen to reinforce their squad for the 2025/26 campaign after securing Champions League football and Eddie Howe has identified a goalkeeper he wants to sign Newcastle have reportedly entered negotiations with Burnley over the signing of James Trafford. The Magpies have made a quiet start to the summer transfer window, with 18-year-old Antonio Cordero the only signing so far, but are ready to step things up. Newcastle will play in the Champions League next season and want to strengthen their squad following an encouraging campaign under Eddie Howe. The team finished fifth in the Premier League and won the Carabao Cup and Howe is keen to kick on in the 2025/26 season. ‌ Like other sides, they are restricted by the profit and sustainability rules and the free transfer of Cordero from Malaga is the only deal they have done in the first 10-day window before the Club World Cup. That is not for lack of trying, with Newcastle linked with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, Brighton striker Joao Pedro and Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga. ‌ None of those players will be the first major summer signing, though, with Sky Sports reporting that the Magpies are in talks with Burnley over Trafford. Howe wants the Clarets keeper to join and challenge Nick Pope for the No.1 spot next season. Talks are still ongoing, with Burnley's valuation of £30million too high for Newcastle, who are keen to negotiate it down. The 22-year-old still has two years left on his Burnley contract and is poised to be the side's first-choice keeper when they begin the 2025/26 season in the Premier League following promotion from the Championship. Trafford played 45 of Burnley's 46 Championship games last season, keeping a staggering 29 clean sheets while playing behind the league's best defence. Scott Parker's side conceded just 16 goals in 46 games and only finished second behind Leeds on goal difference. Unlike Pope, Trafford is currently away with England, having been picked by Thomas Tuchel alongside first-choice keeper Jordan Pickford and Crystal Palace 's Dean Henderson. HAVE YOUR SAY! Would James Trafford be a good signing for Newcastle? Comment below. ‌ Pope, who is about to enter the final year of his Newcastle contract, has won 10 caps for his country, but, at 33, is 11 years older than Trafford, who could become his successor at St James' Park, with backup keeper Martin Dubravka 36. Explaining Newcastle's approach this summer last month, Howe said: "There's no doubt that's what the club's ambition is. But of course, as we've said many times, the ability financially to compete the last few years has been hampered by PSR, but those issues aren't there for the coming window. So I don't see any reason why we can't strengthen, not weaken ourselves. 'From my perspective, and I'm not in control of the finances, it all depends on the individual case. There in not a blanket, 'No, we're not going to break that'. Or, 'Yes, we are'. It depends on the individual and if the individual is worth doing that with, then I think you need to consider it and maybe implement it. 'But you have to be aware that every decision you make has a consequence. So, obviously, you have to think that through carefully.' Darwin Nunez sent new Liverpool demand as reality check issued on top target

Ex-Liverpool front man Emile Heskey gives his view on Darwin Nunez and Alexander Isak as he ponders what the Reds front line needs next season in title defence Emile Heskey believes Liverpool will need Darwin Nunez to start scoring if they don't sell him. And the former Reds forward fears Newcastle striker Alexander Isak won't be available this summer. Nunez, 25, is coming under fire after scoring just seven goals last season and the £85m signing has been linked with a move away from the club. ‌ Saudi side Al-Hilal have been sniffing around but there has yet to be any offers made to the Reds for the Uruguay international. Heskey, who scored 60 goals in 223 games for the Reds between 2000 and 2004, believes Nunez has to step up to ease the goal-scoring burden on Mo Salah if he stays for next season. ‌ 'The thing is, Liverpool fans will always back you and always give you the opportunity, they have done until this day,' he told 'Darwin Nunez is a fantastic workhorse and with his work ethic, you see what you get from him and it's fantastic, but the reality is there are goals that need to be scored. "We've been spoiled over the years with Roberto Firmino, with Mo Salah (who's still spoiling us) and Sadio Mane, but when you look at the rest of them, when you're taking out Mo Salah, where are Liverpool getting their goals from? 'That's one of the major doubts that a lot of fans and media have with him. Can he be that goal scorer that's going to get you a minimum of 15 goals? 'That's probably needed because if Mo Salah's not getting you the 35-plus, who else is going to be chipping in? I think at one stage, between Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz, they had four goals. Not everything can be put onto Mo Salah to be getting the goals and be getting the assists and everything. So you're just looking at him, and you can't be good. His work rate is outstanding. 'He's a defender's nightmare because he just doesn't give them a second to think, which is great. After all, we've had probably one of the best defensive forwards in Ian Rush. He defended from the front, he didn't give the defenders one second, he chased them down. He made sure they were kicking the ball out. 'He made sure he was putting a tackle in on them and they understood the assignment that he had. I think Darwin Nunez has got that a little bit about him, but again, you want the goals alongside that because you've got to be chipping in when you're trying to win the league again, you need that'. ‌ Liverpool have been linked to Newcastle hitman Isak, who Heskey would love to see in a red shirt but he doesn't think the Magpies will be selling their star striker. 'I'd have to say Alexander Isak, but I'm not sure he'd be available,' he added. 'He's proven in the Premier League and proven to be playing in different roles as well. You don't just see him as an out and out forward who just stays in, I would say he's Haaland-esque and just stays between the goal posts and waits for opportunities. ‌ 'He creates opportunity, he creates havoc. He runs with the ball, he takes defenders on, he takes defenders into areas that they don't necessarily want to go into and that's one of the toughest things for defenders, when a forward starts drawing you out of where you are comfortable and drawing you into uncomfortable territories - he does that. 'When you look at the different types of goals he's scored, he's scored tap-ins, screamers, headers and volleys. So someone like that would be ideal, but again, the key thing is availability, and I'm not sure he would be available."
