My Super-Special 79th Was Not Super Special
Dear Diary,
I did NOT have the birthday of my dreams last weekend! Everyone knows that 79 is the tank birthday. One is paper, 77 is emoluments, 78 you get to destroy one constitutional amendment of your choosing, 80 you get to become the state, but 79 is tanks, and I was so looking forward to my tank birthday.
I thought it was pretty clear what I wanted. But obviously, it wasn't!!! This was like the kind of tank parade your mom makes you lovingly from scratch, and I wanted the kind of tank parade that is made in China or North Korea. I don't want a special American tank parade where our soldiers are waving and smiling out of the tanks. I want one like my friends have.
I wanted tanks, but I got OLD tanks. I wanted marching, but I got the wrong kind of marching, where they didn't even do the little high-kick thing. I wanted millions of people to come out and cheer and hold up pictures of my face and they did, but they all went to the wrong places.
What does a president have to do to get the right kind of birthday tank parade? I have been dispatching troops to American cities and Stephen Miller is openly speculating about rolling back habeas corpus; it is not even subtle at this point what kind of government I'm going for!
My parade was just awful. It was all about the Army, which, okay, is turning 250, but only in the literal sense. First, a guy dressed as George Washington rode by on a horse. I don't know why we make such a big fuss about this old toothless man who gave up power on purpose. We used to have a king, and now we don't, and it's all because of this loser! Also, he was obviously wearing a wig. They also retold part of the plot of the musical Hamilton, which felt like a personal affront.
Then Civil War soldiers marched by, but they were in the WRONG COLOR uniform, not the one worn by the folks who all our best forts are named for, but the blue one. This is the Army's DEI at work again.
Throughout the parade, they kept trying to tell us fun facts about history. Do I look like someone who wants a history lesson? No! I am somebody who wants to repeat history, not somebody who wants to learn it.
It was sponsored by Palantir, which was SOMETHING, I guess.
I had been thinking more along the lines of: Someone comes out to sing the national anthem and then stops, winks, turns to me, and starts singing 'Happy Birthday' in a breathy voice instead. Then the Army rolls up with an enormous cake. But wait, what's that in the cake? Could it be? I cut into the cake with a big sword to reveal A BRAND-NEW TANK! (Whoever finds the tank in the cake gets to be king for life!) Everyone claps.
Whoa! What is that, parachuting out of the sky? It's another tank, like in the Fast and the Furious series of films! And who's that, lifting the lid of the tank? It's the pope!
'Sorry,' he says. 'It was all a joke about me being pope. Here, try on my pointy white hat! I know you love a pointy white hat! You will be a great pope. The best pope.' Then the tank releases special red-white-and-blue smoke to indicate that a new, better pope has been selected: red for MAGA, white for pope, and blue to indicate that the pope is a boy.
Then they sing 'Memories,' from the musical CATS! William McKinley rides by on a tariff and gives me a thumbs-up!
Then the Army goes by, but bigger and more excited this time. They are finally doing the high-kick thing! Then my dad climbs out of the tank and says, 'The hole in you that has never been filled is full now!' and whispers, 'I have a special surprise for you, my best boy! Look out your window, Donald, and see!' I run to the window and it's the '80s again! Finally! Everywhere I look there are flags, and so many dollars, and a bald eagle, and an oil well spouting for joy. I am the president, and the pope, and the tank has made me king for life! It is the best birthday ever!
Needless to say, this is NOT what happened.

Abstinence, patriotism and monogamy all required curriculum under new Ohio bill
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Ohio lawmakers proposed a bill that would require public schools to teach character education, including abstinence, patriotism and respect for religious faith. House Bill 269 would require public schools to teach grades 7-12 about a success sequence for a good life, including 15 distinct morals like punctuality and respect for authority. Under the bill, dubbed the THRIVE Act, districts could also invite religious and political groups to provide after-school instruction about morality. State, federal cannabis changes threaten Ohio festival's future 'The model curriculum shall consist of the value of finishing high school, working full-time, getting married before having children and instruction in the following character traits and fundamental values deeply rooted in the history and tradition of the United States,' the bill reads. The bill is co-sponsored by Reps. Kevin Ritter (R-Marietta) and Jonathan Newman (R-Troy). Ritter said the idea came after speaking with employers and colleges about a lack of soft skills in applicants, like interpersonal skills or emotional intelligence. 'When you talk about 'soft skills,' you are really talking about virtue,' Ritter said. 'Representative Newman and I thought it was important to bring attention to these long-time American values by reintroducing them to our schools in an intentional way.' The bill lists these 15 virtues as required education: Trustworthiness, including honesty, reliability, punctuality and loyalty Responsibility, including hard work, accountability, diligence, good judgment, perseverance and self-control Care for family, including parents, siblings, and future spouses and children Kindness and generosity toward others Respect and care for human life Respect for parental authority Respect for parents' obligations to children Respect for the property of other people Respect for legitimate authority and law Respect for patriotism, service to the community and concern for the common good Respect for religious faith, morality, wisdom and knowledge Respect for lifelong marriage, sexual fidelity within marriage and sexual abstinence outside of marriage Gratitude Charity Courage The bill would also require districts to teach the success sequence: graduating high school, getting a job and getting married before having children. 'Of course, this isn't the only pathway to a happy life,' Ritter said via email. 'Many people raised by single parents are successful. But the data shows that following this formula is the EASIEST way to be successful.' Fire engine shortage felt nationwide, not just Columbus The same sequence was introduced as possible required curriculum in the Senate earlier this year, although it has not advanced out of committee. As part of the character education program, school districts would be allowed to invite partisan groups into district instructional buildings after school for optional instruction. With parent consent, these programs would expand on the success sequence or character education through a philosophical, historical, traditional or religious lens. Under H.B. 269, districts could deny groups if the subject matter is not relevant, but they cannot otherwise exclude groups because of their viewpoints, including religious or political groups. Newman said this would be optional at no extra cost for school districts, adding that 'reinforcement is key.' Some of the character traits are already included in Ohio's learning standards. Ohio's sexual education standards emphasize abstinence, and the state's social emotional learning standards include things like responsibility and respect. Ritter said the bill is 'pro-public-school' and 'pro-teacher' in introducing concepts and skills that allow students to prosper. 8 killed, 287 hospitalized as Iran retaliates against Israel
Israel's Health Ministry confirmed that eight individuals were killed and at least 287 individuals were hospitalized on Sunday night and Monday morning as Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes against Israel in the aftermath of Israel's large-scale strikes against Iran's nuclear program and ballistic missile program. The Iranian strikes also damaged the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv. According to The Times of Israel, Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin, an Israel Defense Forces spokesperson, confirmed that dozens of drones and roughly 65 ballistic missiles were launched by Iran against Israel late Sunday and early Monday. The outlet noted that while most of the missiles and drones were intercepted, eight individuals were killed and hundreds were injured. The Times of Israel reported that 24 Israelis have been killed since Iran started launching retaliatory strikes against the country last Friday. In a Monday post on X, formerly Twitter, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee confirmed that Iran's missiles also damaged the American embassy in Tel Aviv overnight. Huckabee tweeted, 'Some minor damage from concussions of Iranian missile hits near Embassy Branch in @TelAviv but no injuries to US personnel.' Israel's Health Ministry confirmed that the majority of the individuals hospitalized as a result of the strikes were treated with minor injuries, while one individual was listed in serious condition. According to The New York Post, Sunday's strikes by Iran come after Israel executed preemptive strikes against Iran's nuclear program and ballistic missile program. The outlet noted that the Israel Defense Forces conducted additional strikes against Iran on Monday. Fox News reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday that Israel had control of the airspace above Iran's capital city. 'On behalf of the people and State of Israel, you are doing incredible things,' Netanyahu said regarding the Israeli Air Force while visiting the Tel Nof Air Base on Monday. 'The Israeli Air Force controls the skies over Tehran. This changes the entire campaign.' As Israel continues to target Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs and other military targets, Iran's state media has reported that the country is preparing to launch the 'largest and most intense missile attack' against Israel, according to The Times of Israel.
