Relief as Praa Sands gets its loos back

BBC News31-07-2025
Visitors to one of Cornwall's most popular beaches can breathe a sigh of relief with the reopening of public toilets. The facilities at Praa Sands, near Porthleven, have been refurbished thanks to the Friends of Praa Sands, a local volunteer group. It stepped in and took over the lease from Cornwall Council after they were closed about a year ago."We felt it was necessary to do something ourselves and now we've done them up, they're probably the cleanest toilets you'll find anywhere right now," said Jon Matthews, chair of the group.
The newly revamped loos, which replace temporary toilets, come at cost. But most visitors are happy to pay a 50p charge, aid Mr Matthews, "because it means they've got access to proper toilets on a beautiful, long, golden beach".The group has even installed a card reader to accommodate cashless visitors.
Looking ahead, the group is exploring ways to reduce reliance on volunteers during the quieter winter months, including installing turnstiles."It's brought the community together in a really positive way," said Mr Matthews. "I never thought running a toilet block could be fun, but it is. "You're chatting to people, keeping things clean, and it just works."

York football fan to fly plane to Cornwall for match

A football fan from Yorkshire is planning a 600-mile (about 970km) round trip to Cornwall to watch his home team's opening league City fan David Bower is aiming to pilot a four-seater Piper Warrior to Newquay Airport on Saturday morning, before making the onward journey to newly-promoted Truro match will be Truro City's first ever in the National League, the fifth tier of English Bower said he was unsure how he and his brother - who is flying with him - would make their way from the airport to the ground, but would sort it out on the day. He said: "I am a runner, it's about 15 miles so it would probably take about two hours, but my brother wouldn't want to do that - we'll probably take a taxi or get the bus."Mr Bower has had a pilot's licence for about 30 years and has flown to three previous York City games, though the furthest he had previously flown was Exeter. Mr Bower said he "couldn't believe it" when he saw York's opening fixture, as Truro's manager John Askey previously managed York, adding "he was well liked".Mr Bower predicted York should beat Truro as they were a "fluid attacking side" that played a "really nice style of football".However he said he was "really pleased" Truro, whose players include ex-York City striker Sam Sanders, were promoted last season and felt they should "do alright"."Truro are the unknown entity, aren't they, so I hope they do well - apart from Saturday."

National Trust closes Cornish beach voted one of world's best

For decades, Cornish locals and discerning tourists have enjoyed the stunning scenery and turquoise waters of Pedn Vounder beach. Voted one of the top ten most beautiful beaches in the world by and named as one of Britain's best beaches by The Times, Pedn Vounder is a short walk from the village of Treen, which lies about four miles east of Land's End. But this week, at the height of the summer tourist season, the National Trust has chosen to close the beach on health and safety grounds. To the consternation of locals and tourists alike, the conservation charity has roped off the cliff access path and erected a large red sign that reads: 'Danger. No access.'
