Beau the Doberman has burn wounds but she's OK; teen who helped save dog from arson fire meets grateful owner
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The story on Donna Avenue, in central Bakersfield, is this: a house mostly intact, a family alive and grateful, a frightened dog reassured, and a Bakersfield Driller hailed as a hero.
It was Monday night, around 10:30 p.m., when a series of fires broke out in the alley behind David Stewart's house on Donna Avenue. The family safely scrambled out the front door, but Stewart went back inside to grab some things. That's when he looked out the window at the orange hellscape in his backyard and came to the only conclusion possible – his young Doberman, Beau, was dead.
Nothing could have survived that inferno.
'I'm thinking, 'our dog's dead…why? They burned down the house, they saw the dog, they still lit the fire, our dog's dead,'' Stewart said. 'I don't understand it.'
What he didn't know at the time was that three men had come to the rescue. One of them, Demien Garcia – a Bakersfield High School senior – who had sprinted two blocks to see what he could do to help. He found Beau trapped under debris, the fire mere feet away.
Garcia kicked down the backyard fence and started trying to free the dog.
'It was pretty hard,' he said. 'I was playing tug of war with the chain. So, the fire was getting really close, the electrical pole was on fire. I knew I was on a time stamp.'
About that time, two freelance photo journalists, Jacob Davidson and Eric Isbell, came tearing down the alley to gather news video. When they saw Garcia frantically doing – something – they abandoned their camera and pitched in. The three of them managed to cut the dog's collar off and free her from the chain lead, which had become pinned under debris.
Beau is alright now, but Monday night she was in a lot of trouble and the scars are still evident on her backside.
All's well that ends well – although Bakersfield Fire investigators are still looking into what appears to be arson. Davidson said he showed them video he took of a man on a bicycle, dressed in all black, who seemed out of place and in a hurry.

Meanwhile, 26-year-old David Stewart and 18-year-old Demien Garcia have restored each other's faith in the world.
Stewart said, 'He saved a family member.'

Three arrested after probation officers find meth, firearms in Lincoln St home
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Three people were arrested on Tuesday after a search of a home on Lincoln Street led to the discovery of drugs and weapons, according to the Kern County Probation Department. On June 3, probation officers conducted a home call in the 1400 block of Lincoln Street, according to officials. During the search of the home, officers found about 30 grams of suspected methamphetamine, a loaded improvised 12-gauge shotgun frame and barrel, a loaded .38 special single shot pistol, a .22 caliber revolver, several rounds and U.S. currency. Bakersfield man on probation arrested on suspicion of drug sales under Prop 36 Juvenal Alva, 36, was on active felony probation, officials said. Alva was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance while armed with a loaded firearm, possessing ammunition by a prohibited person, resisting an officer by force, possessing a controlled substance for sale and other drug-related charges. The probation department said Alva also had an active felony warrant. Ramiro Vasquez, 47, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance for sale and an active felony warrant. Rogelio Alba, 39, was arrested on suspicion of resisting officers and possessing a nunchaku, the department said. Woman pleads no contest to embezzling thousands from Delano Philippine Weekend Committee
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A 67-year-old woman has pleaded no contest to embezzling thousands of dollars from the Delano Philippine Weekend Committee to buy gifts for men she met online, according to court records. Delilah Mascarinas on Tuesday pleaded no contest to both felony counts filed against her — embezzlement by a public officer and check fraud. She was charged in 2023. Prosecutors say she faces up to three years and eight months in prison, but the court-indicated sentence is felony probation with restitution. Sentencing is set for Aug. 6 at the Delano courthouse. After starting an Instagram account in 2022, Mascarinas engaged in conversations with numerous men who claimed to be in the military, and received eight marriage proposals, according to her statement contained in Delano police reports. Mascarinas told police the men asked for gift cards to pay for internet, games and music. She said she bought the cards through an account that was designated for use by the Delano Philippine Weekend Committee, which annually organizes a two-day event celebrating Filipino culture. She said she meant to pay the money back. 'And it just spiraled out of control,' she told police. 'And when I wasn't able to pay it back then that's when everything happened.' An investigation determined around $20,000 was missing. Mascarinas had access to the committee's account for years but said she didn't use it for personal expenses until 2022. Blind Colorado woman attacked by other passenger while riding RTD bus in Denver
A Colorado woman who is blind and her seeing-eye dog were assaulted last month on a Regional Transportation District bus twice by the same woman. The suspect is still wanted by police. For the victim, Angela Stewart, being visually impaired has never stopped her in her tracks. CBS Colorado's Gabriela Vidal interviews Angela Stewart. She walks with her seeing-eye dog Dixie in the image. CBS "I've had low vision my entire life. I have a very rare eye condition that makes my retinas didn't form all the way," said Stewart. "That took my vision from like maybe 25% to 15%." Nearly every day after work in Denver, she walks along 16th Street with her German Shepard guide, Dixie, leading her to their RTD stop she takes to Union Station. "I don't let my disability or issues define who I am, so I'm going to take the bus because that's what I have to do," said Stewart. It's a route, however, that has now become a reminder of the one time she could not see danger coming. "I got on the shuttle like I always do, and there was a woman screaming on the bus at the bus driver," said Stewart. "My problem is, she's screaming and yelling and carrying on and I can't hear the bus stops." Stewart says she yelled back at the woman to be quiet, and admittedly may have replied to the woman in a negative way when she threatened to beat her up. "She came up the bus and she punched me in the face, and then she punched me again and she pushed me in the back of the bus," said Stewart. Video shared by RTD captured the whole altercation, which happened on May 29 after 4:25 p.m. Stewart is seen trying to defend herself as the female suspect punches Stewart and pulls her by the hair until other passengers tried to remove the suspect from the bus. RTD "I was just in shock that she actually came over and hit me," said Stewart. Moments later, the same suspect got back on the bus to pick up a red object on the ground near Stewart's legs, grabs Stewart by the face and shoves her against the bus seats before getting away. RTD "Maybe I shouldn't have said what I said, but I didn't deserve to get beaten like that," said Stewart. Stewart sustained bruises on her face and body from the attack. "I'm not going to let a situation like this intimidate me. I'm not going to live in fear because somebody hit me," said Stewart. RTD tells CBS Colorado the incident is still under investigation. DPD says anyone with information is asked to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers. "I can't fight back, except for this way," said Stewart, "Except for pressing charges and letting the police and the law do what they need to do." For now, Stewart is remaining a little bit more vigilant every time she and Dixie get on the bus. "I couldn't see her, but I could hear her. I could hear her voice, so if she gets on the bus all I can do is listen; listen for it and see if she's on there." Stewart hopes anyone who rides public transportation does their best to be careful to avoid something like this from happening. "Just be aware of where you are, and be aware that if somebody is yelling and carrying on, they might be violent," said Stewart. "Don't engage them."
