Minnesota shooting: Former President Biden, VP Harris attend memorial service for slain Minnesota house speaker
A solemn silence fell over the Basilica of Saint Mary on Saturday as more than 1,000 mourners including former US President
Joe Biden
,
Kamala Harris
and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, gathered to honor Melissa Hortman, the trailblazing former Minnesota house speaker.
Hortman and her husband, Mark, were killed two weeks ago by a man impersonating a police officer in what federal prosecutors describe as a politically motivated attack. The shooting also left state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, seriously wounded. The couple's golden retriever, Gilbert, was also injured and later euthanized.
Biden and Harris sat in the front row with Governor Tim Walz, who was Harris's 2024 running mate.
'Melissa Hortman will be remembered as the most consequential speaker in Minnesota history,' Walz said in his eulogy. 'I get to remember her as a close friend, a mentor, and the most talented legislator I have ever known.'
Walz praised Hortman's ability to lead without dominating — a lawmaker known for her conviction, not combativeness. 'She knew how to get her way,' he said. 'But she never made anyone feel they'd been steamrolled.

She didn't need someone else to lose for her to win.'
The day before the service, more than 7,500 people filed through the Capitol rotunda in St. Paul, where the bodies of Hortman, her husband, and Gilbert lay in state — a rare honor in Minnesota. Biden also visited Hoffman at the hospital.
First elected in 2004, Hortman rose to become a central architect of Minnesota's liberal policy agenda. As House speaker, she led a sweeping 2023 session that delivered free school meals, expanded abortion access, and strengthened protections for transgender rights.
This year, with the House evenly split, she stepped aside as speaker under a power-sharing agreement but remained a key figure in budget negotiations.
The service drew current and former lawmakers from both parties, underscoring the respect Hortman commanded across the aisle.
The suspect, 57-year-old Vance Boelter of Green Isle, remains in custody following what officials called the largest manhunt in state history. He has not entered a plea and is due back in court Thursday. Prosecutors have not publicly discussed a motive but are pursuing federal charges that could carry the death penalty.

HC grants interim relief to 59-yr-old teacher
Cuttack: A 59-year-old English teacher at Lachhaman Balajew Higher Secondary School in Angalo, Jajpur, has secured interim relief from the Orissa high court in his plea seeking correction of his date of birth and an extension of his service tenure. During the hearing on June 26, additional government advocate S K Jee informed the court that the govt would decide the matter within two weeks. Taking note of the submission, Justice Biraja Prasanna Satapathy granted interim relief, directing that "in the interim, the petitioner be allowed to continue in his post till the next date." The matter will next be heard in the week commencing July 21. Alok Chandra Barik approached the court after the school and mass education department failed to act on documents verifying his actual date of birth as June 6, 1967, not June 6, 1965, as recorded in his original high school certificate. Advocate Purushottam Chuli, representing Barik, told the court that the date of birth in the original HSC certificate was erroneous. However, his admit card and provisional certificate issued by the Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha, reflected the correct date. Acting on a formal representation filed on April 4, the BSE issued a duplicate HSC certificate on April 19 confirming 1967 as his correct birth year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like local network access control Esseps Learn More Undo According to the petition, Barik submitted the corrected document to his school authorities on April 29, which was later forwarded to the director of higher education. On May 30, the deputy director sought verification of the certificate. The BSE secretary confirmed its authenticity on June 2. Despite this, no official correction has been made in govt records, putting Barik at risk of retirement on June 30, 2025, two years before his actual superannuation date, the petition said. Barik has sought a directive from the court allowing him to serve till June 30, 2027, claiming that the delay despite verified documents would unjustly shorten his career by two years. He joined service on July 15, 1991.

Sunday raid: 74kg of bushmeat & guns seized in Bengaluru; kingpin on the run
Bengaluru: Close on the heels of the brutal killing of tigers at MM Hills wildlife sanctuary, forest officials Sunday busted a bushmeat distribution network operating from Bengaluru, uncovering a cache of 74kg of illegal meat — mainly venison and wild boar — intended for 'Sunday Special' orders placed via a messaging app. The crackdown, led by the Kaggalipura forest range under the Bengaluru Urban forest division, followed a tip-off. Officials intercepted a hatchback (KA05 AG 1302) at NICE Road–Bannerghatta Road junction around dawn. Inside, they found four dead spotted deer and one wild boar. The driver, Pratap, 31, a Gubbalala resident, led the officials to a shed at CK Palya near Bannerghatta, which served as the network's distribution hub. The shed, belonging to Bheemappa and managed by Ramesh, had already been vacated. "They had bundled the meat into small parcels for delivery. We also seized another hatchback, a motorbike, and wildlife body parts including deer skin," said an official. "There were whispers of bushmeat trade along Bengaluru's fringes, but no solid leads. On Sunday, we caught them red-handed," he said. The animals were hunted near Thondahalla in Kolar district. "A team has been sent to verify this with Kolar forest officials," said an officer. Conservationists have lauded the bust but urged the department to trace and penalise those placing regular bushmeat orders, stating they pose a big threat to wildlife protection efforts.
