SANDF says it's committed to cooperating with Hawks' probe into SAS Manthatisi incident
CAPE TOWN - The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) said it was committed to cooperating with the Directorate of Priority Crimes Investigations related to the SAS Manthatisi submarine incident.
Lieutenant-Commander Gillian Hector, Master Warrant Officer William Mathipa and Warrant Officer Mokwapa Mojela, died after being swept off the submarine during a training drill in stormy sea conditions in September 2023.
Hector's widower, Commander Romero Hector, who is also a SA Navy officer, is still looking for answers, while the Hawks have confirmed that an investigation into the incident was underway.
SA Navy Commander Romero Hector, whose wife, Lieutenant-Commander Gillian Hector, perished during the incident, said that he approached his superiors for full disclosure after suspecting negligence but was met with red tape.
Hector said he feels vindicated after the Hawks confirmed they were investigating the incident.
"I would like to see the Hawks fully execute their criminal investigation, as well as me pursuing my civil case against them."
SANDF spokesperson Prince Tshabalala said that the SA Navy's legal team was committed to cooperating with the Hawks.
"The SA Navy is in contact with the complainant, Commander Hector, and his legal representatives regarding their requests and concerns."
Prince also rejected the Democratic Alliance (DA)'s claim that the SANDF was refusing to release a report on the incident, saying once legal procedures were completed, a response would be made public.

The troops were deployed under a Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission sent to the war-torn country in December 2023 to help restore peace and security in the region. But the SADC said in March it would end its military mission in the mineral-rich area after 17 of its soldiers were killed. Earlier this year, fighting in the region erupted once more when the Rwandan-backed M23 force seized large swathes of DRC's north and south Kivu provinces -- both of which border Rwanda.

Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba said the incident unfolded on June 10, 2025, when a 42-year-old businessman was forcefully abducted from his hardware store by an unknown male suspect. The suspect allegedly shoved the victim into his vehicle before fleeing the scene at high speed. "Following the incident, the kidnapping task team of the Hawks, in collaboration with the East London Flying Squad and the Dog Unit (K9), acted swiftly on vital information received from alert community members. The team then followed a vehicle of interest," said Fumba. This led to the interception of a vehicle of interest and the immediate arrest of a 34-year-old male suspect. Further investigation uncovered the alleged involvement of a local councillor, who is believed to have played a pivotal role in helping the main suspect attempt an escape. The councillor's accomplice, who allegedly carried out the kidnapping, remains in custody. An East London councillor has on Friday been released on R2 000 bail after she was arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a businessman in Dimbiza, Eastern Cape. The 27-year-old woman was arrested and charged for aiding the escape of a man who abducted the 42-year-old hardware store owner on 10 June. Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation's (Hawks) regional spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba said the 34-year-old man allegedly forcefully shoved the business owner into a car belonging to the owner before speeding off. Kidnapper intercepted The East London-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation kidnapping task team was alerted of the incident and attended to the matter, which the Hawks say was a shameless kidnapping act. 'The kidnapping task team of the Hawks, in collaboration with the East London Flying Squad and the Dog Unit (K9), acted swiftly to vital information received from alert community members; the team then followed the vehicle of interest,' Fumba said. 'Both accused appeared before the Dimbaza Magistrate's Court on 12 June 2025.' While the councillor was granted bail, the male suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear in court on 19 June for a formal bail application.
