SANDF says it's committed to cooperating with Hawks' probe into SAS Manthatisi incident
Lieutenant-Commander Gillian Hector, Master Warrant Officer William Mathipa and Warrant Officer Mokwapa Mojela, died after being swept off the submarine during a training drill in stormy sea conditions in September 2023.
Hector's widower, Commander Romero Hector, who is also a SA Navy officer, is still looking for answers, while the Hawks have confirmed that an investigation into the incident was underway.
SA Navy Commander Romero Hector, whose wife, Lieutenant-Commander Gillian Hector, perished during the incident, said that he approached his superiors for full disclosure after suspecting negligence but was met with red tape.
Hector said he feels vindicated after the Hawks confirmed they were investigating the incident.
"I would like to see the Hawks fully execute their criminal investigation, as well as me pursuing my civil case against them."
SANDF spokesperson Prince Tshabalala said that the SA Navy's legal team was committed to cooperating with the Hawks.
"The SA Navy is in contact with the complainant, Commander Hector, and his legal representatives regarding their requests and concerns."
Prince also rejected the Democratic Alliance (DA)'s claim that the SANDF was refusing to release a report on the incident, saying once legal procedures were completed, a response would be made public.

Man accused of impersonating ex Hawks head denied bail
The Hatfield magistrate's court has denied bail to parolee Thabo Enoch Theletsane who is accused of fraud and impersonating a police official. 'It is alleged that on October 25 2024 while out on parole after serving a sentence for fraud, Theletsane, 41, contacted a prominent businessman via WhatsApp using a profile picture of the former national head of the Hawks Lt-Gen Godfrey Lebeya,' National Prosecuting Authority Lumka Mahanjana said During the call, he allegedly claimed the businessman's phone had been hacked and that the businessman would be contacted by a 'Mr Mokoena', purportedly a police officer from the cybercrime unit. Posing as 'Mr Mokoena', Theletsane allegedly told the businessman that his phone had been hacked and offered to 'clean' it. 'He is accused of requesting the businessman's frequently used contact numbers, which he then obtained. The accused allegedly asked the businessman to make a payment for a hard drive to store his information; however, this payment was not made.' In a separate incident, Theletsane allegedly contacted another complainant using the numbers supplied by the businessman. He allegedly told the second complainant that their phone had been hacked and requested a payment of R50,000 for a hard drive to store their information. The complainant paid the money. 'After realising they had been defrauded, both victims reported the matter to the police on November 1 2024. After an intensive investigation, Theletsane was arrested on May 10.' In court, Theletsane requested bail, claiming he has seven children and another on the way to provide for. Prosecutor Dikeledi Moganyaka opposed bail and read into the record an affidavit by investigating officer Mpho Phantinah Dlamini, who said the accused had deliberately given a false address during the investigation and had two previous convictions for fraud and forgery from 2020, making him likely to reoffend if released. Denying Theletsane bail, the court agreed with the state that the accused had a propensity for committing crime since he is alleged to have committed the latest offences just days after being released on parole. The case was postponed until September 2 for transfer to the Pretoria magistrate's court.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Theletsane contacted a prominent businessman via WhatsApp, using a profile picture of Lebeya, the former National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI). This incident occurred while he was out on parole, having been released on 24 October 2024 after serving a sentence for previous fraud offences. During the call, he allegedly claimed his phone had been hacked and that the businessman would be contacted by 'Mr. Mokoena,' purportedly a police officer from the cybercrime unit. He further argued that the parole board had indicated it would reconsider revoking his parole if he were granted bail. However, Prosecutor Dikeledi Moganyaka opposed the bail application, presenting an affidavit from investigating officer Mpho Phantinah Dlamini. The affidavit revealed that Theletsane had deliberately provided a false address during the investigation and had two prior convictions for fraud and forgery from 2020, making him a likely candidate to reoffend if released. In delivering judgment, the magistrate agreed with the State that the accused has a propensity to commit crimes since he is alleged to have committed the current offences just days after being released on parole. The court also found his claims about the parole board to be unsubstantiated and ruled that releasing him would not be in the interest of justice. Huge reward offered for arrest of cop killer Jabulani Moyo
A nationwide manhunt is underway for Jabulani Thabang Moyo, the suspect in the fatal shooting of two police officers in Roodepoort on Friday, 8 August. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has announced a R150 000 reward for any information leading to his arrest. Moyo is considered 'extremely dangerous' and authorities have urged the public not to approach him under any circumstances. According to police reports, Warrant Officer Vuyisile Sintwa (51) and Sergeant Simon Masenye (45) – both members of a specialised task team – were transporting Moyo back to Boksburg prison following a court appearance when the suspect allegedly opened fire, stole their service firearms, and fled in their unmarked police vehicle. The vehicle was later recovered abandoned nearby. The incident has shocked the country and intensified scrutiny over police security protocols during high-risk transfers. Speaking from the homes of the bereaved families, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola condemned the killing, calling it 'a declaration of war on the state.' 'This is not just an attack on police, it's an attack on law, order, and the very institutions meant to protect society,' Masemola said. The two officers were both seasoned veterans – Sintwa had 23 years of service, while Masenye had served for 17 years. Their deaths form part of a growing trend of violence against police. Since April, six officers have been killed in targeted attacks, with 27 officers having lost their lives in the past year. The Hawks are currently reviewing surveillance footage from both the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court and a filling station where the officers reportedly stopped before the ambush. Meanwhile, the SAPS also confirmed that a separate R150 000 reward is being offered for information regarding 10 suspects linked to the killing of Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni, who was gunned down in Mpumalanga during a burglary response within 24 hours of the Roodepoort attack.
