The Comedy About Spies review – rapid fire gags in a delightfully silly show

The Guardian13-05-2025
'Vodka martini.' 'Shaken?' 'Yes, but I'll be fine.' If groanworthy jokes of that calibre float your boat, The Comedy About Spies, set in early 1960s London, will be plain sailing. Even if they don't, that needn't put you off: the new show from Mischief, the company behind the smash-hit … Goes Wrong series, also offers farce, slapstick and multiple callbacks. So much of the script relies on linguistic misunderstandings (sweet/suite, need/knead, etc) that even the most tolerant viewer may become homophone-phobic.
The nonsense, orchestrated by director Matt DiCarlo, kicks off immediately with secret agents confusingly named after letters of the alphabet ('Not U – you!'). We then jump to the art deco lobby of the Piccadilly Hotel where MI6, the CIA and the KGB are trying to get their hands on the mysterious Project Midnight. Among those caught up in the tangle of mistaken identities are a milquetoast baker and a blustering thespian hoping to be cast in Dr No as 'Ooh-Seven'.
A predisposition to the gag-rate of Airplane! will boost enjoyment, though The Comedy About Spies is fast-paced enough to make that film seem positively Beckettian. I was crying helpless tears of laughter within the first five minutes, and at several other moments throughout, not least during a line about a haunted leaflet that would take a paragraph to explain. The damp-squib gags tend to be eclipsed by the dynamite ones, with a single exception: a vulgar running joke about a veteran CIA agent thrilled by the prospect of a threesome with her own son rather sours the jolly mood.
David Farley's doll's-house-style cross-section set, which splits the hotel into colour-coded quarters in the first act, is glorious, but his designs grow fussy and over-dressed in act two and leave one craving the ingenious minimalism of Operation Mincemeat. The depth of emotion in that similarly silly show is also absent here, making The Comedy About Spies a more mechanical endeavour. Except, that is, for actor and co-writer Henry Lewis's poignant final line reading, which bestows dignity on to a character (the Bond wannabe) who has been a buffoon throughout. This time, there were tears in my eyes for a different reason.
At the Noël Coward theatre, London, until 5 September

Bollywood-inspired 'A Christmas Carol' will feature an anti-refugee Scrooge - and star Boy George, Eva Longoria and Danny Dyer

A Bollywood-inspired adaptation of A Christmas Carol will star a version of Ebenezer Scrooge who 'despises refugees', the director has revealed. The musical, which is directed by Gurinder Chadha and based on the 1843 novella by Charles Dickens, will feature a 'British-Indian' man named Sood as the lead character. He is described as a wealthy man who hates poor people and refugees on the basis they 'haven't worked as hard as him to get where he is'. The film, called Christmas Karma, is due for release in November this year and will star Kunal Nayyar, Boy George, Eva Longoria, Hugh Bonneville and Billy Porter. EastEnders actor Danny Dyer also has a part in the musical as a London cab driver and was spotted wearing a red Christmas jumper during filming in May last year. Ms Chadha said according to The Telegraph: 'Our Scrooge, called Sood, is a rich British Indian who despises poor people and refugees in particular. 'Sood has decided that immense wealth brings him status and standing, so to hell with the poor, unemployed and disenfranchised who didn't work as hard as him to get where he is.' The director, who is known for Bend It Like Beckham and Bride and Prejudice, said the inspiration for the modern-day musical came from politicians in Britain today. She added that Christmas Karma, which is set in London, is a celebration of 'all of modern Britain's communities and cultures'. Ms Chadha explained that her version is 'very true to the original text and sentiment' and aims to teach viewers how prejudice in society still exists. 'A hundred and eighty-two years later, Dickens' novella still resonates globally in today's sometimes harsh world,' she said. A Christmas Carol traditionally recounts the story of Ebenezer Scrooge - a miserable old man who is visited by a series of ghosts. He is subsequently transformed into a kinder and more empathetic character. Nayyar, who will play the protagonist in Ms Chadha's musical, is known for his role as Raj Koothrappali in the US sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Meanwhile, Boy George will play the Ghost of Christmas Future and Paddington's Hugh Bonneville will take on the role of the Ghost of Jacob Marley. The film, called Christmas Karma, is due for release in November this year and will star Kunal Nayyar, Boy George (left), Eva Longoria (right), Hugh Bonneville and Billy Porter Nayyar, who will play the protagonist in Ms Chadha's musical, is known for his role as Raj Koothrappali in the US sitcom The Big Bang Theory Christmas Karma is the latest in a series of controversial remakes of Dickens' work. In 2019, the BBC's version of A Christmas Carol was slammed by viewers for tampering with the traditional dialogue. Those tuning into episode one of the three-part drama were shocked when lead character Ebeneezer Scrooge [played by Guy Pearce] dropped the F-bomb. The mini-series was written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. It shocked fans from the off, opening with a scene in which a young boy urinates on the grave of Jacob Marley, calling him 'a skinflint b*****d'. Claire Tomalin, who wrote a celebrated biography of Dickens, said at the time: 'I don't think he would have been very pleased. 'Dickens didn't need people urinating on graves. He reached people through the power of his words and his imagination.'

Pregnant Pixie Lott showcases her blossoming baby bump in a plunging red gown as she steps out in London - just weeks before her due date

Pixie Lott proudly displayed her baby bump as she stepped out in London on Wednesday - just weeks before her due date. The 34-year-old singer, who recently announced she is expecting her second child with husband Oliver Cheshire, turned heads in a plunging red gown. She completed the ethereal look with red velvet heels and delicate jewellery. Pixie was spotted gently cradling her blossoming bump as she walked through large metal gates on her way to her next destination. Her outing comes after the singer, who is already a mother to son Bertie, 23 months, revealed exactly when she is set to welcome baby number two. Speaking to The Sun earlier this month, the Essex-born beauty revealed that she is just four weeks away from welcoming her newborn, with her last gig being Friday's Flackstock. She said: 'I think the last gig [Flackstock] is going to be four weeks before the due date. So yeah, I think it's going to be fine... 'I did it last time and I've checked with the doc and he said that it's fine to keep doing it as long as you feel good. So hopefully, I mean that last show, four weeks, I don't know how long... Woo!' Pixie also discussed how she feels while being pregnant, working and looking after an under two-year-old all in one go. She divulged: 'It's more tiring being pregnant, waking up early and running around after him than the shows, because with the shows I get like an adrenaline that takes over so I don't even think about it... 'The tiring bit is the running around after the toilet fight.' Last month, Pixie announced live on stage that she was expecting her second child at London's Mighty Hoopla. After revealing her pregnancy, Pixie cradled her blossoming bump and she flashed a radiant smile for the cheering crowd. Her very public announcement came in contrast to her first pregnancy, which she kept a secret until she was 31 weeks along. Pixie was spotted gently cradling her blossoming bump as she walked through large metal gates on her way to her next destination The pop star took to Instagram to break the joyous news in June 2023, showing off her bump in a black sports bra and leggings, while Oliver planted a kiss on her stomach. While the hitmaker has previously revealed her desire to have a 'big family', telling The Sun in 2021: 'I'm a big family girl, a very big family girl. 'It is everything to me so I would love to have my own when I can find the time. It's such an amazing thing to have.' Pixie and Oliver met for the first time at a Select Model catwalk show back in 2010 and quickly struck up a romance. The model then popped the question in November 2016 on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral in London. The couple finally tied the knot in June 2022 at Ely Cathedral after they were forced to cancel their wedding several times due to the Covid pandemic.
