During Walton Goggins and Aimee Lou Wood's lengthy interview published in Variety last week, The White Lotus co-stars didn't just go to great lengths to dispel rumours that they feuded off-screen while playing star-crossed lovers on the hit HBO show.
They also revealed that they worked together very closely on filming an 'intimate sex scene' involving their two characters, Rick and Chelsea, for the season's final episode. But the actors were disappointed to discover, while watching the episode when it aired, that the scene had been cut.
The third season of The White Lotus involved intrigue among several groups of guests at a luxury Thai resort. Goggins played the mysterious Rick, a man with a shady past. Meanwhile, Wood starred as Rick's free-spirited girlfriend Chelsea.
Rick and Chelsea share 'a complicated' love story, as Variety explained, because he's obsessed with tracking down a man in Thailand who he believes killed his father. Chelsea, who sees her and Rick as 'soul mates,' keeps trying to pull him back from his dark spiral. It does not end well.
Goggins and Wood told Variety that they immediately connected as co-stars, within a couple minutes of first meeting for lunch before the production started.
'The minute she walked around the corner, I felt, 'This is gonna work,'' Goggins said. 'Two minutes into the conversation, it felt like I've known this person for 100 years.'
Together, they worked on creating the arc of their characters' love story, which included two sex scenes. 'We designed the whole journey, even down to the fact that Chelsea gets on Rick in the first (love) scene,' Wood said. 'Then in the last episode, it was Rick picking Chelsea up. It was so, so delicate.'
In the final episode, Rick and Chelsea have an emotional reunion on the beach, then go to their hotel suite to discuss their relationship. Wood told Variety it had a 'similar feel' to the 'that's the plan' scene at at earlier breakfast, when they confirmed their love for each other.
This moment in the hotel suite also involved that very 'intimate' sex scene, which Goggins said showed 'two people who were free. It was this very long, suspended moment of these two people looking at each other. It was so powerful.'
After describing the scene, Variety writer Emily Longeretta said that Goggins picked up her recorder and yelled a message to Mike White, the creator of The White Lotus . Goggins said: '(Expletive) you, Mike! We want a director's cut!'
Elsewhere in the interview, Goggins and Wood pointedly denied the rumour that they feuded. The rumour was in part fueled by co-star Jason Isaacs hinting to The Guardian that there had been on-set drama with 'alliances that formed and broke, romances that formed and broke, friendships that formed and broke.'
Goggins and Wood told Variety there was no drama between them.
'There is no feud,' Goggins said. 'I adore, I love this woman madly, and she is so important to me. This is Goldie Hawn. This is Meg Ryan. She can do anything, and she will. You watch what the next 20 years of her experience will be.'
Fans of The White Lotus also speculated that there had been a rift between the actors because they briefly unfollowed each other on Instagram after the season finale aired. They have since refollowed each other, according to People .
Wood lamented people's obsession with celebrities following and unfollowing one another on social media as 'irrelevant,' though indicative of 'where we're at culturally.' Goggins, meanwhile, got emotional while trying to explain that unfollowing Wood after the show wrapped was his way of processing the experience.
'I knew what we had gone through, and I knew how close that we had gotten, and I needed to begin to process saying goodbye to Rick and Chelsea,' Goggins said – Mercury News/Tribune News Service

Zaslav flips Warner plan after US$40bil in lost value

Warner Bros chief executive officer David Zaslav. — Bloomberg NEW YORK: Just three years after arguing that the best way to boost the value of Warner Media and Discovery Inc was to combine their assets, chief executive officer David Zaslav now says that the real key to unlocking their potential worth is to split them apart. The stock has declined about 60% since that merger was completed in April 2022, wiping out some US$40bil from the company's market value. The announcement on Monday will split Warner Bros Discovery Inc into two separately traded public companies, one focused on the fast-growing streaming assets and film studios, and the other which will house the struggling legacy cable TV channels. The decision is just the latest reversal for Zaslav, who has come under fire for multiple missteps in running the parent company of HBO, CNN, TV and film studios and sports broadcasting. The move is also an opportunity, perhaps even a final chance, for Zaslav, 65, to transform Warner Bros into the leading global entertainment company he originally envisioned. 'By operating as two distinct and optimised companies in the future, we are empowering these iconic brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today's evolving media landscape,' Zaslav said in a statement on Monday. Investors seem unsure whether to buy Zaslav's latest pitch. After an initial spike higher when the news was announced, the stock turned around and the shares closed down 3% on Monday. Representatives for Zaslav said he wasn't available for an interview. The separation is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. Zaslav was the architect of the merger between AT&T Inc's WarnerMedia and Discovery, which he had been running since 2006. The move married WarnerMedia's brands like HBO with the more populist programming at Discovery as Zaslav looked to build a rival to streaming giant Netflix Inc. It also saddled the new company with billions of dollars in debt, an albatross that has continued to weigh on its valuation. — Bloomberg

Warner Brothers Discovery to split into 2 companies

Warner Brothers Discovery will break into two publicly traded companies in 'Streaming & Studios' and 'Global Networks'. (EPA Images pic) NEW YORK : Warner Brothers Discovery announced today that it will split into two companies as it seeks to build up its streaming business while also maximising value in legacy news and entertainment products. The entertainment giant will break itself into two publicly traded companies in 'Streaming & Studios' and 'Global Networks'. The shift, designed to enable each venture to 'maximise its potential,' is expected to be completed by mid-2026, the company said. The move, which reallocates assets such as HBO Max and CNN, is the latest reflection of how streaming is remaking a media business in which Warner Brothers Discovery and other legacy players traditionally garnered considerable revenues from 'bundled' cable products that many consumers are now eschewing in favour of a la carte streaming purchases. Streaming & Studios will include the libraries of HBO and Warner Brothers, studio production facilities in California and Britain and tours and experiences. The venture will focus on growing HBO Max, now in 77 markets, said the company's press release. Global Networks will house Discovery, as well as CNN and TNT Sports, which are known for coverage of live events. Assets in this group currently reach 1.1 billion viewers across 200 countries and territories. Warner Brothers Discovery CEO David Zaslav will serve as chief of streaming, while Warner Brothers Discovery chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels will lead global networks. 'By operating as two distinct and optimized companies in the future, we are empowering these iconic brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today's evolving media landscape,' Zaslav said. Shares of Warner Brothers Discovery surged 10.3% in morning trading.
