South Korea, US and Japan top military chiefs meet in Seoul - International
General Dan Caine, the top US military officer, held talks with his South Korean counterpart Kim Myung-soo, and Japan's General Yoshihide Yoshida, as part of an annual meeting on regional security.
They discussed growing military ties between Moscow and Pyongyang, which has sent weapons and thousands of troops for Russia's war in Ukraine.
The talks covered "the potential transfer of military technology from Russia to the DPRK", the three military chiefs said in a statement which used North Korea's official name.
They called on the nuclear-armed North to "immediately cease" all such unlawful activities.
Speaking at the start of the trilateral talks, Caine said that North Korea and China are both "undergoing an unprecedented military build up with a clear and unambiguous intent to move forward with their own agendas".
"We need to be mindful of that, we need to be able to demonstrate resolve, to be entrepreneurial and proactive in our partnerships," he added.
Separately, the three countries conducted joint air drills on Friday over South Korea's southern island of Jeju, involving a US B-52H strategic bomber, according to the defence ministry.
Washington, Seoul's long-time security ally, stations around 28,500 troops in the South.
The two countries signed a new five-year agreement in 2024 on sharing the cost of those troops, but this week Trump said South Korea is "paying very little for the military".
Trump, who has also threatened Seoul with 25 percent tariffs unless they can negotiate a trade deal, said South Korea "should be paying for their military".
South Korea's foreign ministry said this week that they were "committed to faithfully implementing" the defence cost deal, "which was validly concluded and has entered into force".

He noted that the forum provides a key platform for fostering private-sector partnerships and exploring joint investment opportunities across various sectors. Abdelatty emphasized the need to fully utilize the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to expand cooperation, particularly in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, mining, and manufacturing. He also highlighted Egypt's efforts to develop its investment environment and infrastructure, and expand its industrial base into sectors such as electronics, construction materials, food processing, and pharmaceuticals—citing their high quality and competitive pricing. The minister pointed to Egypt's ongoing national mega-projects and the country's vast market potential, affirming the government's readiness to support deeper economic cooperation with Nigeria. He also referenced the longstanding political and historical ties between the two nations. Abdelatty concluded by urging joint action to eliminate barriers to economic collaboration and reiterated Egypt's full commitment to supporting investors and businesses from both sides. UK calls for 50-day drive to arm Ukraine - War in Ukraine
The UK government on Monday called for a 50-day drive to arm Ukraine to take advantage of a recent ultimatum put to Russia by US President Donald Trump. Earlier this month, Trump gave Russian President Vladimir Putin 50 days to strike a peace deal with Kyiv in the three-year war or face sanctions. UK Defence Secretary John Healey told a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG) that Kyiv's backers stand at a moment of "maximum opportunity". "As members of this UDCG, we need to step up, in turn, a 50-day drive to arm Ukraine on the battlefield and to help push Putin to the negotiating table," Healey told the virtual meeting of 52 nations. Trump also pledged to supply Kyiv with new military aid, sponsored by NATO allies, as its cities suffer ever-increasing Russian aerial attacks since Moscow's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Healey, chairing the meeting alongside German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, said the UK "backs this policy". "We will play our full part in its success," he added. Russia has escalated long-range aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities as well as frontline assaults and shelling over recent months, defying Trump's warning. Healey said Britain and Germany have "agreed to partner in providing critical air defence missiles to Ukraine". Pistorius said the two countries would provide 220,000 rounds of 35 millimetre ammunition for anti-aircraft guns used by Ukraine. According to the UK defence ministry, Britain has sent £150 million ($200 million) worth of air defence missiles and artillery rounds to Ukraine in the past two months. The UK has pledged to spend £700 million on air defence and artillery ammunition for Ukraine this year. The commitment is in addition to other funding to provide more of the drones that have become key weapons in the war with Russia. Some 50,000 drones have been delivered to Ukraine in the last six months, with another 20,000 coming from a coalition of nations led by Britain and Latvia. In a statement, the ministry stressed that the three European powers — known collectively as the E3 — are maintaining close consultations aimed at reviving negotiations and preventing further escalation surrounding Iran's nuclear program. The announcement comes amid growing regional tensions and international concern over Tehran's recent acceleration of uranium enrichment activities and its reduced cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
