Soap Box Derby gives kids chance to shine in Salem
SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – The Soap Box Derby Race happened in Salem Saturday morning.
Quakertown Super Kids held their annual race on Broadway Avenue.
Twenty-one racers rode in double derby cars, all controlled by ghost drivers.
The winner and two picks will go to the National Soap Box Derby.
'These kids, a lot of them couldn't participate in any other type of sport. We have one little boy in a wheelchair, we have two children that just recovered from cancer. All of them have some kind of disability and they can't always participate in other types of sports. This is really exciting for them, it's a big deal,' said Jan Keene, race director.
The National Soap Box Derby will take place July 19 at Derby Downs in Akron.
Saturday's Soap Box Derby happened alongside the Salem Super Cruise, which is happening through Sunday.

Angel Reese Reacts to Chicago Sky's New Post Before Indiana Fever Game
Angel Reese Reacts to Chicago Sky's New Post Before Indiana Fever Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the Chicago Sky prepare for their home game Saturday against the Indiana Fever, Angel Reese is staying locked in. It's been a slow start for Reese and her teammates, who have won just two of their first six games. Advertisement The opponent is a familiar one. The Sky and Fever faced off to open the regular season on May 17, when Indiana rolled to a 93-58 win. This time, though, the matchup will look a bit different. Indiana star Caitlin Clark is out due to injury. Reese appears ready for the rematch. She reacted to a team social media post showing her attacking the basket and finishing at the rim during practice. Her reaction? Simple and silent: just a repost of the video with no caption. Angel Reese, InstagramAngel Reese, Instagram Reese, now in her second WNBA season, was the seventh overall pick in the 2024 draft. The 23-year-old forward is averaging 10.0 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. Chicago Sky forward Angel Scuteri-Imagn Images Saturday's matchup also marks a rematch of the game where Clark committed a Flagrant 1 foul on Reese in the second half, sparking a wave of reactions and discussions across social media about the state of the league. Reese is one of four Chicago players averaging double figures this season. Ariel Atkins leads the team with 15.3 points per game. Courtney Vandersloot and Kamilla Cardoso are also contributing with 12.0 and 11.3 points per game, respectively. With Clark sidelined, Kelsey Mitchell has stepped up for Indiana. Caitlin Clark's Former Teammate Kate Martin Sends Message After Personal Decision
Caitlin Clark's Former Teammate Kate Martin Sends Message After Personal Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kate Martin has faced several adjustments in her basketball career over the past couple of seasons. From teaming up with Caitlin Clark at the University of Iowa to being drafted 18th overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft, her journey has been full of transitions. Advertisement Now in her second WNBA season, Martin is settling in after a few games with the Golden State Valkyries. Originally starting her pro career in Las Vegas, Martin was selected by Golden State in the league's expansion draft. Earlier this week, Martin appeared on "Bird's Eye View with Sue Bird" and had plenty to discuss. One of the standout topics was her decision to delete social media — a move she spoke about at length. Martin shared how she learned to block out distractions while playing at Iowa. "Caitlin and our entire Iowa squad did such a good job learning how to block out outside noise when we were in the heat of it," Martin said. "The negative stuff can be bad, but the positive stuff can be just as bad sometimes. "If you're going to live for a good comment from some random person, you're going to die." Advertisement Sue Bird echoed the sentiment, replying: "High with the high, lows with the lows. You can't get caught up in either." Martin then explained her approach to managing social media during the season. "That first Final Four run, I deleted my social media for the entire season — it was like six or seven months," Martin said. "I'm doing the same this year. Everything is so new, there's so much going on, and I don't need the positive or the negative. I need to focus on my team." Golden State Valkyries guard Kate Yamashita-Imagn Images Martin appeared in 34 games last season with the Aces and made two starts. She averaged 2.6 points in 11.5 minutes per game. Advertisement In six games this season with the Valkyries entering Saturday, Martin is averaging 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 15.2 minutes per game. Her breakout performance came last Sunday against Minnesota, when she dropped 14 points in 19 minutes of action. After hosting the Aces on Saturday, Golden State hits the road to face the Los Angeles Sparks on Monday. The Valkyries have split two meetings so far this season with L.A.
