Soap Box Derby gives kids chance to shine in Salem
SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – The Soap Box Derby Race happened in Salem Saturday morning.
Quakertown Super Kids held their annual race on Broadway Avenue.
Twenty-one racers rode in double derby cars, all controlled by ghost drivers.
The winner and two picks will go to the National Soap Box Derby.
'These kids, a lot of them couldn't participate in any other type of sport. We have one little boy in a wheelchair, we have two children that just recovered from cancer. All of them have some kind of disability and they can't always participate in other types of sports. This is really exciting for them, it's a big deal,' said Jan Keene, race director.
The National Soap Box Derby will take place July 19 at Derby Downs in Akron.
Saturday's Soap Box Derby happened alongside the Salem Super Cruise, which is happening through Sunday.
