Nichols Named to Preseason All-Conference USA Team
RUSTON, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — Louisiana Tech's senior left-handed pitcher Luke Nichols has been named to the 2025 Preseason All-Conference USA, per the league office's announcement Thursday afternoon.
'It's always good to see our players be recognized for their hard work, sacrifice and commitment, and Luke definitely deserves this recognition,' head coach Lane Burroughs said about his standout pitcher.
Native of Bell City, Missouri, Nichols arrived in Ruston prior to the 2024 season as a transfer from Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Mo. He earned First Team All-Conference recognitions after collecting a record of 4-4 in 17 appearances with 16 starts, as well as being named to the CUSA Commissioner's Honor Roll.

He tossed a team-high 78.2 innings with 82 strikeouts, which ranked the second-most on LA Tech's roster, while maintaining a 4.46 ERA.
'He was a weekend mainstay for us last year and, quite frankly, his numbers-especially wins and losses-should have been better,' Burroughs said. 'He had some things go against him in games that was totally out of his control. It was great to see voters recognize his skill set last year and award him All-CUSA honors.'
Nichols threw the lone complete game for the Bulldogs against Western Kentucky on May 11 in a seven-inning run rule over the Hilltoppers. He posted a line of five hits, two runs, one walk and five punchouts in the 12-2 route.

He fanned a season-high nine batters against Liberty during the final regular-season weekend series. Nichols threw at least five strikeouts in eight of his appearances and recorded at least seven strikeouts in in four of his last seven appearances of the 2024 season.
'I know it's coach speak,' Burroughs added. 'But Luke and all of our guys will tell you that the only polls and accolades that matter are the ones at the end of the season, but it's always nice to garner respect from your peers.'
Nichols and the Bulldogs open up the 2025 campaign on Friday, February 14 for a four-game series with the Maine Black Bears at J.C. Love Field.

Westbrook, 36, had until June 29 to make a decision on the second year of the two-season deal he had agreed to with Denver last summer. The 6-foot-4 UCLA alum is now slated to join potentially his seventh NBA franchise across the last eight seasons. Still, there's a chance Westbrook could stick around. Across 75 available regular season bouts, Westbrook averaged 13.3 points on a .449/.323/.661 slash line, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.4 swipes. In reduced playing time, those numbers shrank a bit during the postseason. He averaged 11.7 points on inefficient shooting splits of .391/.317/.700, along with 3.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists (against 2.3 turnovers), and 0.9 steals. The biggest issues with Westbrook are his inclination to hold the ball for too long (especially on a team with elite creators like three-time MVP center Nikola Jokic and guard Jamal Murray), his inconsistent off-ball effort, his poor jump-shooting, and his disengaged defense. He may have some value as an eighth man, especially in the regular season, but giving him significant playoff minutes at this stage is risky. The Nuggets are understandably desperate to help Jokic win his second title with the franchise after two disappointing second round playoff exits. Denver thankfully now has some breathing room below the NBA's harshly punitive second luxury tax apron, with 12 players currently signed. Advertisement The team can now use its $5.7 taxpayer mid-level exception, a mechanism that would have been unavailable to Denver as a second apron team, and two veteran minimum slots to add new talent around its core of Jokic, Murray and Gordon. Key swingman Christian Braun is still on his rookie-scale contract at present, but will become extension-eligible this summer, and could fetch a major raise. But the Nuggets can worry about what a likely-pricey Braun deal kicking in for 2025-26 will do to their payroll later. For now, the team should focus on affordable help for Jokic, and perhaps sniff around possible Porter trade packages. INDIANAPOLIS — WNBA All-Star weekend is just over a month away, and Indianapolis is deep in preparations to host the game. Starting Thursday, fans will have a big part in deciding who will take the court at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on July 19. Fan voting for WNBA All-Star runs from June 12 to 28, and the All-Stars will be announced in early July. Advertisement Here's how voting for All-Star works. How are WNBA All-Stars decided? The WNBA selects All-Stars from a combination of fan, player, media and coach voting. Fans account for 50% of the initial vote, while player and media selections account for 25% each. The league will then combine all of those scores, and the four frontcourt players and six guards with the top combined votes will become the All-Star starters. The coaches will then vote to select the 12 total reserves. They are required to vote for three guards and five frontcourt players, then can vote for four players regardless of position. They cannot vote for players on their own team.
