The Ice Tower review – Marion Cotillard focus of obsession and idolisation in death-wish fairytale

The Guardian16-02-2025

An eerie and unwholesome spell is cast in this film; it is a fairytale of death-wish yearning and erotic submission. It wittily fuses the real and the fictional into a trance-state – and that's the state that I've sometimes found a little static in previous films by Lucile Hadzihalilovic, but not here. Dreamily strange it might be (and in fact, on the face of it, entirely preposterous) this movie had me gripped with its two outstanding lead performances – from Marion Cotillard and newcomer Clara Pacini – and a clamorous musical score.
Cotillard plays a diva-ish movie actress called Cristina, who is the lead in a new adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen being filmed on a soundstage which is in a remote and snowy spot in late 60s France; she is gorgeously costumed in a sparkling white form-fitting gown and crown, a look she carries off with great unsmiling hauteur. Pacini plays Jeanne, a teenage girl in a foster home nearby, stricken with memories of the death of her mother, whose bead necklace she keeps. In her loneliness and grief, Jeanne has projected her feelings into an obsession with the story of the Snow Queen, an obsession further displaced at another remove into idolising the teen girls who ice-skate at the local rink. One day she runs away, stealing the ID of an older girl called Bianca and breaks into the film studio to sleep overnight; she somehow gets a job as an extra, astonished to realise what story is being filmed, and it is here that her gamine prettiness and air of demurely sensitive adoration for the queen catches Cristina's eye.
Cristina's somewhat louche director Dino, played by cameo by Hadzihalilovic's partner Gaspar Noé, is in the habit of telling likely young actresses that he might cast them in his next project, a Hitchcockian thriller. In fact, there is something Hitchcockian in this shoot, with an attack carried out by a bird, and in Cristina's own cold, cruel detachment from the victim's suffering. Hadzihalilovic might intend us to notice in one shot a movie poster for The Red Shoes, but the Powell/Pressburger film that this more resembles is surely Black Narcissus with its female desire and delirium in the bitter mountain cold.
Cristina and Jeanne become very close in a dangerous way, although the younger woman is always subject to Cristina's whim and caprices, the starry mannerisms which Cristina has learned to enforce her own status and mask her vulnerability. There is a great shot of Jeanne's awestruck gaze as she turns the pages of a glossy-magazine profile of Cristina. She learns, along with the audience, that they have much in common: Cristina herself was once in a foster home, and appears to have been guided and protected in her early years by a male confidant, Max (August Diehl), who calls himself her friend and doctor. Has Max been prescribing certain medications for Cristina?
Sequences in the film let us drift onto the set of The Snow Queen, as if in a dream; it is a production design which fabricates the ice-realm in all its seductive artificiality, with the ice tower in one shot is juxtaposed with Cristina's own statuesque poise. We can feel what Jeanne woozily feels: that she has miraculously found herself in the ice realm with the ice queen herself. But what does Cristina want of Jeanne – and what can she want of Cristina? It is a mesmeric melodrama, mixing sensuality with a teetering anxiety, balancing on a cliff-edge of disaster.
The Ice Tower screened at the Berlin film festival.

Paramount Plus adds 'one of the most thrilling and bone-chilling films' fans have ever seen

Many suggest that it is one of the best horror sequels ever made Paramount Plus has just added a sequel to its horror collection that's being hailed as a 'masterclass' and even 'better than the first' film. A Quiet Place Part II has recently been incorporated into the streaming platform's catalogue. This means that all the titles in the sci-fi horror series released so far are now conveniently available on one service. ‌ This includes the original film, its sequel, and the prequel spin-off titled Day One. While the 2021 release was previously accessible on other platforms such as Sky Cinema and even Channel 4 for a limited period, it is now exclusively hosted on Paramount. ‌ Fans can stream it by subscribing to the dedicated app of the streaming service or through an add-on subscription via Amazon Prime Video. The film is the second chapter of the series featuring John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. Krasinski also reprised his role behind the camera, directing the sequel after having directed the original. Known for his portrayal of Jim Halpert in the US Office, he also wrote the script himself, having previously shared writing credits with Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, reports Surrey Live. ‌ While the film employs flashbacks, the narrative continues from where the first left off in a post-apocalyptic world. Regan (Blunt) and her family discover that their alien predators can be defeated using high-frequency audio. Armed with this newfound knowledge, they embark on a quest to find other survivors. Joining the cast are big names like Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou. The film managed to secure a similarly impressive rating on the website Rotten Tomatoes as its predecessor, scoring 91%. The film garnered acclaim from both critics and audiences, with one reviewer hailing it as "one of the best sequels ever created." ‌ Another critic praised John Krasinski's direction, saying: "John Krasinski crafts a masterclass in suspense with Hitchcockian anxiety that would make the master proud." Echoing the sentiment, a fan took to social media to proclaim: "A masterclass in suspense. A Quiet Place II is hands down one of the most thrilling and bone-chilling films that I have ever seen. From start to finish, this movie had me on the edge of my seat, unable to look away even for a second. I would easily give it a terrifying 10 out of 10!". Another enthusiast compared the sequel favourably to a classic, commenting: "In my opinion this is one of the best movie sequels ever made. The second instalment of this series I think is comparable to the movie Aliens by James Cameron. It introduces a lot more action and thrills while remaining faithful to the original and expanding the world. The cast, the story, the directing, the cinematography, the visual effects and the sound design are all incredible. This is also one of the most intense and terrifying movies I've ever seen." ‌ The consensus among many was that the sequel surpassed its predecessor. A viewer remarked: "A great sequel to a previous masterpiece of horror. I really never thought that they could top the first one but a Quiet Place 2 is fantastic film!". Echoing the sentiments, a fan concurred: "One of the greatest sequels to an incredible horror/thriller collection. The entire time you're on the edge of your seat with your heart beating as fast as those on screen. There's no way you can watch this movie without being completely invested." A Quiet Place Part II is streaming on Paramount+.

Pep Guardiola and wife Cristina Serra ‘still estranged and will remain so' despite reports they were rekindling marriage

MANCHESTER CITY manager Pep Guardiola and his wife Cristina Serra 'are still estranged' and 'will remain so' unless anything dramatic occurs, reports in Spain say. It was claimed last month the couple were trying to give their marriage a second chance after Guardiola and his fashion entrepreneur wife spent three days together at their former Barcelona marital home over Easter. Barcelona-based newspaper El Nacional said after the second reunion they were prepared to 'give each another chance' and claimed 'all was not lost in their marriage.' But the journalists who broke the story of their shock split last night shot down the chances of a fresh start for Pep and Cristina after their decision to call time on their 30-year relationship. Lorena Vasquez, one of a duo of well-respected Spanish showbiz reporters who call themselves the Mamarazzis, went on a Spanish TV show in February to say they had launched divorce proceedings which were 'amicable' because they were using the same lawyer. Overnight, shooting down possibilities of a reunion, Lorena's colleague Laura Fa said on the Mamarrazis podcast: 'It's been speculated recently that there could exist a possibility of a reconciliation because Pep Guardiola had been seen at his house in Barcelona with the woman who is still his wife and their youngest daughter. 'We had already explained that despite separating they would continue to see each other as a family. 'That's why after separating Pep and Cristina went to the theatre with their daughter. Lorena added: 'A lot of this has come about one of the visits Pep made to Barcelona when a photographer managed to get a photo of him. Pep Guardiola aims sly dig at rivals Man Utd hours after their heroic Europa League comeback 'We were able to confirm Pep Guardiola spent three days in the city and slept for at least two nights in the house in Barcelona he bought with Cristina where their daughter still lives. 'What we know is that the separation is continuing its course and there's no reconciliation and as far as Cristina is concerned there's no attempt at reconciliation. 'She was the one who sparked the split and gave Pep a sort of ultimatum and he could still be trying to come to terms with the situation.' Laura said: 'The house Pep spends time in when he is in Barcelona is still the family home and will be the place he comes to when he returns to the city to see his children or when there are family events here. 'Pep and Cristina continue to have a good relationship. 'We don't have many more details about the couple's intimacy but we can confirm that they are still separated and there is no reconciliation on the horizon. 'The thing is that when there's a good relationship between a couple who have split, it can sometimes cause confusion.' Lorena Vazquez claimed on Spanish TV 'Y Ahora Sonsoles' on Antena 3 channel in February: 'The divorce is being prepared conscientiously and they have left it in the hands of people they really trust. 'What surprises me the most is that both of them have the same lawyer who is arranging the whole thing. 'They want it to be amicable for the sake of their children.' She added: 'As you can imagine money is not going to be an issue and they are now agreeing on the initial terms to make sure this separation is the most cordial possible.' She went on to say, when asked why she thought Pep was still wearing his wedding ring: 'It's surprising he's still wearing his wedding ring and I wouldn't be able to tell you if it's a symbol he wants to carry on wearing as a homage to his marriage or as an open door to reconciliation, because what we're being told is that he would perhaps be more open to that than his wife. 'What I'm also being told is that Cristina is suffering with the fact her name has come to the fore. 3 Guardiola's split from his wife was announced earlier this year Credit: Getty 'She has been a person who has always been in the background who never wanted to be known or recognised as the partner of Pep Guardiola although she is very proud to be married to him. 'But seeing herself in glossy magazines and seeing herself as the object of the tabloid press is something she doesn't like at all. 'But we know they are very happy that the news has finally come out, or rather than happy I would say relieved. 'We had little information when we first came out with the news but we knew it was true, so much so that they themselves have now transmitted the news to all their close friends because initially they wanted to keep information back about the details of the separation. 'They are still keeping that information back but they are confirming to anyone that asks them that they are separated. 'Although they don't like being protagonists in anything, there is certain relief on their part that finally their split has come out, there are no third people involved, and that it's down to Pep's contract renovation with Manchester City that became very burdensome and was also a surprise for Cristina. Cristina insisted she was 'feeling great' in her first comments since news of their split emerged in January as she was pictured shopping alone in Barcelona. She opted for silence when she was subsequently asked by a Spanish reporter about the cause of their break-up and has refused to comment whenever she has been approached since. The couple's eldest daughter Maria opened up on her parents' lessons about love after becoming the first family member to speak since the shock news of their split. The pretty influencer and fashionista said in a Spanish magazine interview published around the same time her dad's break-up with Cristina emerged: 'My parents have always advised me to find what I am passionate about. 'They encourage me to try new things, to accept failure and to keep searching until I find my calling, because when I do, full dedication will come naturally. 'They also remind me that the most important thing in life is to love and be loved.' The 24-year-old London-based beauty went on to tell Vanity Fair Spain: 'In the end it all comes down to feeling loved. 'Even in situations where we feel out of place, they tell me to listen carefully to others, there is always something valuable to learn from each person we meet.'
