Delhi's peak power demand at season's high as temp soars
New Delhi: Amid soaring temperatures, Delhi recorded its highest peak power demand of this summer on Thursday afternoon. The real-time figures of State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) showed the peak demand was 8,423 MW at 3.06 pm.
Delhi's peak load clocked 8,231 MW at 10:55 pm on Wednesday. It was the first time this year when city's peak power demand crossed 8,000 MW. This year, the peak power demand of Delhi is expected to cross 9,000 MW. In 2024, the national capital recorded an all-time high peak demand of 8,656 MW. Delhi's peak power demand crossed 8,000 MW for the first time in 2023.
In a statement, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL) said it successfully met a peak power demand of 2,407 MW on Wednesday without any outages or network constraints.
The company made comprehensive arrangements for the summer by strengthening its power infrastructure and undertaking preventive as well as condition-based maintenance of all critical electrical installations.
Additional field staff were deployed at key locations, and the call centre team is on alert to ensure swift responses through seamless coordination with on-ground teams. On their part, BRPL and BYPL successfully met the peak power demand of 3,747 MW and 1,832 MW respectively in their areas, said officials.

Delhi woke up to a warm morning on Thursday, with the minimum temperature settling at 30.7 degrees Celsius, 2.7 notches above the season's average, according to IMD. It issued a red alert, the highest-level warning, which advises residents to "take action", stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and limit outdoor movement, especially during peak afternoon hours, for Delhi for June 12 and 13.

On Saturday, pre-monsoon activities are expected to increase in some parts of Udaipur, Kota, Jaipur and Bharatpur divisions and the temperature is expected to fall by 2-3 degrees. The heatwave is expected to continue in Jodhpur and Bikaner divisions and there is a possibility of thunderstorms and light rain in some places after noon. People will get relief from the heat due to further increase in pre-monsoon storm and rain activities from June 15 and further fall in temperature by 2-4 degrees.

Kerala govt approves new barge to boost inland water freight sector
T'puram: The state govt has sanctioned the construction of a 500-metric tonne (MT)-capacity bulk barge for Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation Ltd (KSINC), reviving a long-pending infrastructure project crucial to the state's inland water freight sector. However, the delayed implementation resulted in a significant cost escalation, with the final approved estimate rising to Rs 6.65 crore — up by nearly 48% from the original 2017 sanction. The revised sanction, issued on June 7, comes in the backdrop of rising freight demand from FACT Ltd, KSINC's largest client. KSINC currently handles about 300,000 MT of cargo annually, two-thirds of which is transported for FACT alone. With FACT planning to ramp up its operations to 600,000 MT per year, the new barge is seen as critical to meeting future capacity. Originally sanctioned in Oct 2017 at Rs 4.5 crore, the project was shelved when FACT altered its import strategy. A revival request was made by KSINC in 2022 as demand rebounded, but by then the cost landscape changed drastically. Nonetheless, the state sees this as a strategic investment toward enhancing its inland water transport infrastructure in line with modern maritime standards.
