Why do we dress like someone else when we go on holiday? From multipurpose utility garments to Instagrammable maxi dresses and floppy hats, one thing is for sure – we don't dress this way at home.
An American friend recently asked me what to wear on her first flight to Europe. "I want to be comfy but chic," she said. She'd come to the wrong person. As a travel journalist, I'm either on assignment, sun cream-smeared in hiking boots and hauling a rucksack like a tortoise shell; or travelling light with a five-piece capsule wardrobe in beige neutrals to leave space for edible souvenirs.
Meanwhile, many of my fellow travellers parade past in floral gowns, breezy summer whites or cosy pyjama-like layers. Sometimes I glimpse my own reflection and feel a pang of FOMO. Should I have worn a floral dress to photograph ruins? I don't even own one. Or perhaps instead of clunky hiking boots, I would be more comfortable in a pair of Birkenstocks, with thick white socks hiked up to my knees.
As disparate and sometimes dramatic as travel get-ups can be, one thing is for sure: we don't dress this way back home.
The dawn of holiday wear
So why do we dress so differently when we're on holiday – almost as if we're someone else?
Marta Franceschini, head of communications and editorials at the European Fashion Heritage Association, says that the holiday wardrobe emerged alongside leisure travel in the 19th Century. "Prior to this, clothing for travel was primarily utilitarian, associated with migration, pilgrimage or military and trade expeditions," she explained. According to Franceschini, the growth of the middle class and the expansion of railways in Europe in the mid-1800s meant that seaside resorts became fashionable destinations, prompting the development of travel wardrobes that fused elegance with comfort. Warm weather necessitated lighter, breathable fabrics such as linen and silk, and by the interwar period, designers like Coco Chanel were championing relaxed styles such as casual knitwear, wide-leg trousers and swimwear.
"The post-World War Two economic boom, coupled with the advent of commercial aviation, democratised travel further," Franceschini added. "From the 1950s to the '70s, leisurewear evolved into a distinct genre: Capri pants, resort prints, kaftans and cruise collections became staples."
Franceschini also notes that the need to dress for unfamiliar temperatures "[permits] a certain relaxation of social dress codes".
That explains sandals with socks.
Backpacks and backlash
And yet, it is a universally acknowledged truth that no one wants to look like a tourist.
Lifestyle publications teem with articles steering travellers away from the reviled traditional tourist kit – T-shirt, backpack and hat – proposing, instead, luggage-conscious capsule wardrobes inspired by the destination itself. When Vanessa Friedman, chief fashion critic at the New York Times, receives reader questions about how not to look like a tourist on holiday, she taps locals for their input to make her recommendations. "I think people dress to belong," she told the BBC. "So, when you're travelling, you don't want to stand out."
But if the term "tourist" conveys a sense of escape from the everyday, what's so terrible about looking like one?
"There are some interesting negative connotations about being a tourist," said Dr Charlotte Russell, founder of The Travel Psychologist. "Ideas around being seen as naïve, not being experienced or well-travelled, perhaps clumsy with regard to cultural differences and potentially falling prey to unfair pricing. None of us want to be any of these things, so it's unsurprising that people want to differentiate themselves from these stereotypes."
Franceschini believes that this wariness likely emerged in the late 20th Century, "as global travel became more accessible and distinctions between the traveller and the tourist became increasingly codified".
Anyone booking travel back then – the dawn of internet travel planning and the expat blog boom – would have witnessed that ever-growing chasm between the two. The smug verdict: tourists, who visit a place for mere days, are less culturally savvy than travellers, who may be privileged enough to spend months or even years overseas.
Dr Andrew Stevenson, author of the book The Psychology of Travel, believes this dichotomy reveals something deeper: how we want to be seen.
"Do you want to present yourself as somebody who's trying to blend in, like an anthropologist?" asked Stevenson. "Or do you want to erect a barrier between yourself and the host location, because maybe you've got safety concerns, or you want to travel in a bubble with your travel party? I think clothes are a symbol of how much belongingness we want to have with the place we're visiting."
Do my day-to-night layers and rugged footwear merely reflect that I'm segueing from 10km hikes to interviewing government officials? Or that I want to signal my identity as a travel journalist?
'Monica Vitti is dead'
Picture it: Sicily, The White Lotus Season Two. Jennifer Coolidge as the daffy, doomed Tanya McQuoid has rented a Vespa and is ecstatic in her flowy pink dress, pink headscarf and giant sunglasses.
"Guess who I am?" she asks the hotel manager, Valentina. "Watch, watch." Tanya takes a drag from her cigarette, exhaling smoke in a sultry stream.
Valentina, a bona fide Italian woman in a no-nonsense double-breasted blue pantsuit, is nonplussed. She hazards a guess: "Peppa Pig."
Tanya beams: "I'm Monica Vitti!"
"Monica Vitti is dead," snaps Valentina.
Rarely has a scene of television so perfectly encapsulated the yawning gulf between what people wear and what overseas visitors believe they wear. I've been based in Southern Italy for 15 years; if you see someone swanning around in a flowy dress and hat, they are 100% a tourist.
Franceschini calls it a kind of "sartorial mimicry", observing that "clothing choices are often influenced by an imagined or real desire to either assimilate with the local culture or to symbolically participate in it". Like Bermuda shorts or Hawaiian shirts, she says, these outfits are clichéd, but they are also signs of cultural aspiration and symbolic belonging.
However, she cautions that they can also veer into cultural appropriation, where items are worn "without an understanding of their cultural context or significance".
Tanya's "Dolce Vita" look, Franceschini added, is a contemporary iteration of long-romanticised visions of Mediterranean leisure, femininity and glamour. "Rooted in cinematic depictions from Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita to more recent iterations like the season of The White Lotus set in Italy, this mode of dress draws heavily on idealised representations of Italy as a sensual, timeless and emotionally unburdened destination… These choices are often less about actual cultural integration and more about performing a version of Italy that aligns with global stereotypes – sun-drenched, stylish and hedonistic."
In other words, imagine an overseas visitor visiting London dressed as Twiggy, or the US dressed as Marilyn Monroe.
The Instagram effect
It's hardly news that social media presents a highly curated view of everyday life. But, that knowledge doesn't stop us from consuming holiday content, where influencers and celebrities pose thirstily in front of beautiful places while wearing beautiful things.
Russell believes that these aspirational travel posts have a significant impact how people dress when they travel. "We see a lot of images of people looking dressed up from everywhere to the Colosseum to natural places and even at the top of mountains," she said. "This certainly was not the case 15 years ago, and I definitely think there has been a shift."
"I remember when people used to take photographs of places and things," echoed Stevenson. "But now people take photographs of themselves, and the places and things are in the background."
The result? "A convergence of fashion and digital spectacle: locations become backdrops," said Franceschini. "Outfits become integral to the performative self-branding of the traveller. Influencer culture has further accelerated this dynamic, with sponsored wardrobes, coordinated colour palettes and editorial-style holiday shots becoming standard."
It brings to mind a quote from the legendary late American actress Betty White: "Facebook just sounds like a drag; in my day, seeing pictures of people's vacations was considered punishment."
Time to celebrate
Of course, it's exciting to go somewhere new, and how we dress on holiday is a reflection of that joy.
"Holiday dress often functions as a performative break from the conventions of daily life," said Franceschini. "On holiday, people permit themselves to wear clothing that might be deemed inappropriate, excessive or impractical in their everyday environments. Holiday wear can thus be read as a sartorial manifestation of the freedom, or at least escapism, and sensory indulgence associated with travel."
Russell agrees: "For many of us, we are working on laptops all day or may have uniforms at work, and we dress for function and comfort. So, a holiday is an opportunity to explore a different part of ourselves. A part that is perhaps more carefree, joyful and relaxed."
Whether that self wears hiking boots or pink chiffon, the same truth applies.
"If you want to wear a beautiful dress or bright shirt, and it feels right to you, then this is totally okay," said Russell. "Life is too short for worrying about judgements from others."
And so is your holiday.

Why didn't my travel agent warn me about the extra costs of hiring a car?
Q I booked a rental car in Salzburg through an online travel agent. On my confirmation, it clearly stated that I would only pay a €1 (85p) security deposit. At the rental office, I was compelled to agree to a deposit close to €2,000. The online agent said they have no say in the matter. Next, I was charged €29 for car cleaning – a charge applied to my credit card, not after returning the car, but on the very day I collected it. It was clearly pre-planned. Also, I was charged €12 for an Austrian driving tax – should I not have been told about that extra when making the booking? Roland T A How infuriating, though it looks as though you were relatively fortunate to end up only €40 or so out of pocket. I have heard of worse cases of hire companies taking customers for fools. Booking car rental online through intermediaries can deliver just what you need at an excellent price, with no further hassles. But some firms rely on sneaky charges as part of their business plan. I am afraid that after a few unfortunate incidents – such as being charged for an upgrade that I had explicitly declined – I now avoid online agents. If I am booking through British Airways or Trailfinders as part of a package, I will always get the car through them. Experience shows that the rental providers they use know better than to mess with their customers. Sometimes, if I want a vehicle only for a day or two during a holiday, I will arrange it locally: usually cheap and easy, and if you want a vehicle only for a morning you can often negotiate a decent rate. Otherwise, I take whichever of Avis or Hertz has the best deal. Yes, they are typically more expensive than the cheapest offers online, but I have always found both these companies to be straightforward and efficient, with no unpleasant surprises. On the particular issues you experienced: a security deposit running into the thousands should not be necessary; you might try a chargeback from your card firm for the €29 taken for cleaning; and taxes are often levied locally. Q Double-decker trains are common in Europe. Why does no one ever propose such trains for the UK in order to increase capacity? I appreciate that it would be necessary to modify some bridges and cuttings. Keith W A In railways, being first mover is not necessarily an advantage. Two hundred years after the world's first passenger railway opened in northeast England, the UK is still largely reliant on a Victorian rail network. While the British standard track gauge (the width between the rails) has been accepted across much of the world, the 'loading gauge' is a different matter. The loading gauge is the maximum height and width of locomotives, carriages and freight wagons. When the British rail network was being constructed, the dimensions of tunnels and heights of bridges were deliberately kept tight in order to minimise costs. As a result, there is currently no scope for the tall double-decker trains that are familiar almost everywhere on the continent, from regional services in Germany and the Netherlands to 'duplex' TGVs (high-speed trains) in France. Reconfiguring UK lines to allow such trains to run would be ruinously expensive. The one line on which it might have worked was the route from London Waterloo to Woking, Winchester and Southampton. For some years, demand was so strong at peak times that the idea of expanding the loading gauge and running a special fleet of rush-hour-only trains was actively considered. Since the Covid pandemic, and the change in commuting patterns that resulted, passenger numbers are down nationwide – with rush-hour journeys particularly reduced. The appeal of double-decker trains, capable of moving large numbers of commuters rapidly, has dwindled. What if passenger numbers rise to or above 2019 figures? Extra capacity is likely to be created by improved digital signalling – allowing more trains to run on the same stretch of track – or by the old analogue method of running longer trains. Q We are trying to plan a trip starting at Calgary in Canada. We want to rent a car from the airport and travel to Banff and surrounding national parks. From there we hope to travel down to the US and finish in Phoenix, Arizona. I am struggling to find a rental company that allows cross-border rentals. We did think about hiring one in Canada and then another in the US. But we are not sure how difficult that would be: to drop off a car on one side of the border, cross it, and then pick up another car. Do you have any ideas? Maria S A I applaud your choice of destinations, meandering south through North America from the Canadian Rockies to one of the world capitals of sunshine in the shape of Phoenix. But I recommend you reconsider your proposed trip. Forget about a one-way rental from western Canada to the southwestern US. In the unlikely event you could find a rental company that would allow you to pick up in Calgary and drop off in Phoenix, the drop-off fee would be astronomical – into the thousands of pounds. Instead I urge you to continue west – from Calgary via Banff and Jasper national park through southern British Columbia to Vancouver. Leave the car in that beautiful harbour city (with at most a small drop-off fee) and treat yourself to the best Canada-US cross-border experience, the Cascades train to Seattle. From here, you will be able to fly cheaply and easily to Las Vegas. Even if the idea of neon glitz in the desert does not appeal, you will be able to rent a car with a modest drop-off fee to take you to your final destination. I can guarantee an enthralling journey that could include the Hoover Dam, Lake Havasu City (home of London Bridge) and a wealth of state parks and national forests before you arrive in sunny Phoenix. Q My daughter (aged 31) and I will have two and a half days in the city of Bordeaux at the end of next week. What are the four or five key things to see or experience? Bill M A Bordeaux wraps around a bend of the Garonne River in southwestern France, 300 miles from Paris. It does not rate as highly as it should as a destination for a European city break. The standout cultural attraction is MusBA – the Musee des Beaux-Arts (Fine Arts Museum), founded in 1801. Matisse, Picasso, Rubens and Titian are all represented. The most spectacular tourist draw is Cite du Vin, a swirl of glass and metal rising from the waterside. Inside, you can follow the trail of the vine from its origins in the Caucasus six millennia ago to the Medoc region – the triangle of territory between Bordeaux, the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic. You can get a spectacular view of the city, along with a tasting of wine, on the eighth floor. Gastronomically, Bordeaux is outstanding; the tourist office claims it has more restaurants per capita than any other French city. Atlantic seafood, Basque and Perigord specialities are accompanied by some heavenly wines. Visit the Capucins market to be amazed by the raw materials. Unesco recognises the waterfront architecture in the city centre – and also the startling angles of the Cite Fruges housing development in the southwestern suburb of Pessac. Le Corbusier created this community of 51 houses to accommodate workers in the 1920s. The location means it's a good final stop on the way to the airport, if you are flying home. For a view of the city from the water, take a 90-minute boat tour with Burdigala Cruises. If you have any time for a trip out of town, I recommend Arcachon. In late June this resort will look lovely and be relatively uncrowded, and clambering through the sand of the vast Dune du Pilat, just to the south, is an uncommon joy.

Why the Scottish Football Museum is one of the world's best
May 1976, Scotland v England at Hampden Park. In the 49th minute, with the score 1-1, Joe Jordan rampages down the left wing and crosses to Kenny Dalglish. As a nation holds its breath, Dalglish shimmies past an England defender and fires a shot. To everyone's surprise, the normally reliable Ray Clemence lets the ball slip between his legs and trickle into the net. From Kirkwall to Kirkcudbright, Scots respond with the kind of collective roar usually reserved for the likes of Bannockburn. This seminal moment in sporting history is played endlessly in a video loop at the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden, which Live Football Tickets has just named the third best football museum in Europe. Bettered only by museums in Greece and Serbia, the Hampden museum was streets ahead of the National Football Museum in Manchester, which limped in at ninth. Another historic win for Scotland. For the full Hampden experience, the museum manager, Andy Kerr, leads hour-long tours behind the scenes, through players' and match officials' dressing rooms and into the tunnel leading to the pitch, followed by as long as visitors like in the museum. • Scottish Football Museum honours women's game The original Hampden was built in 1903, and three decades later a world record crowd of 149,415 crammed in to watch Scotland beat England 3-1. It was demolished in the 1990s to make way for a downsized modern stadium. The dressing rooms are smart and functional rather than luxurious, allowing players representing club or country to focus on what they are here for. But they are helped to feel at home with national and club emblems on the walls of their respective rooms. The atmospheric climax is walking through the tunnel towards the Hampden Roar, which must make a few hairs rise. I can only imagine the thrill. Every year two teams emerge hoping to win the oldest association football trophy in the world, the Scottish Cup, which has pride of place in a glass case here at the museum. It is a handsome trophy crafted by silversmiths in 1873 for 56 pounds, 7 shillings and 11 pence, now estimated to be worth an eye-watering £1 million. For this reason it never leaves the stadium. After being presented to the winning team and paraded in a victory lap, it is returned to the museum for safekeeping and the team is given a replica. The stars of the collection are undoubtedly the portraits of dozens of players, managers and personalities. Dalglish is prominent among them, along with Denis Law, 'Slim Jim' Baxter, Graeme Souness and Alex Ferguson. • Five of the best heritage museums in Scotland There are surprising names among lesser-known lights of the game, notably Robert Smyth McColl, who scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 victory over England in 1900. He became known as 'Toffee' Bob a year later when he founded a newsagent with his brother. There was also a licensed-to-kill secret agent by the name of James Bond, aka Sean Connery, who played for Bonnyrigg Rose juniors for a couple of seasons in the 1950s. 'Big Tam' is remembered for a fashionable brown corduroy jacket and an entourage of doe-eyed local girls, though he was offered a trial by the Manchester United manager Matt Busby, which he wisely declined for an acting career. A set of 1903 iron and wood turnstiles leads to a motley collection of historic football strips, medals, posters and clunky leather boots that look as if they were designed for coalminers. Speaking of which, the exhibition From Pit to Pitch: A Story of Coal Seams & Football Dreams, running until the end of the year, investigates the mining communities across central Scotland that incubated great footballers and managers, including Bill Shankly, Jock Stein and Busby. One exhibit brought back fond memories of my early career as a trainee sports reporter, showing a section of the old press box with a phone booth that adorned the roof of the old stadium. I still remember climbing a spiral iron staircase and the smell of an old wooden corridor leading to our eyrie overlooking the field of dreams and much of Glasgow, as far as Ben Lomond.
