Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne's ups and downs during their 40-year marriage
Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne's marriage was put to the test through many ups and downs over the last 40 years before Ozzy tragically died at age 76.
'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,' his family said in a statement to The Post on Tuesday. 'He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.'
The couple met in 1970, but they didn't get together until after Ozzy split from his first wife, Thelma Riley, with whom he shares three of his six children.
Ozzy, 76, married Sharon, 72, and they quickly started a family together — but their relationship became jeopardized after Ozzy attempted to murder his wife and then had an affair.

However, Sharon chose to stay with the rockstar. She supported him with his health issues that included his Parkinson's diagnosis, three operations, stem cell treatments and Hybrid Assistive Limb treatment in the years leading up to his death.
'Sharon is like my soulmate — sometimes I love her, sometimes I don't love her, sometimes I'm angry with her, sometimes I'm crazy about her, sometimes I'm very jealous of her, sometimes I wanna f—ng kill her,' Ozzy said about Sharon last year.

'But through it all, at the end of the day, I love her more than anything in the world,' he added. 'Put it this way: I couldn't live without her; I don't wanna live without her.'

The couple tied the knot on July 4, 1982 in Hawaii. Ozzy finalized his divorce from his first wife just months before the wedding.

1989: Ozzy is arrested for trying to kill Sharon
Ozzy tried to kill Sharon while under the influence. He allegedly told her, 'We've come to a decision that you've got to die,' before he lunged at her and tried to strangle her.
However, Sharon was able to press 'the panic button' and the police quickly arrived and arrested him for attempted murder.
'It was probably the most frightened I've ever been,' Sharon once said about the incident.

Sharon did not press charges against her husband, who spent six months in a medical detention.
March 2002: Ozzy and Sharon's reality show premieres
'The Osbournes' premiered on MTV on March 5, 2002. The first season of the show, which followed the lives of Ozzy, Sharon, Kelly and Jack, was the most-viewed series ever on MTV at the time.
The series ran for four seasons and ended in March 2005.

April 2013: Ozzy and Sharon deny they're divorcing
After rumors began to swirl about Ozzy's sobriety and marriage, he released a statement admitting that he relapsed but denied he and Sharon were divorcing.
'For the last year and a half I have been drinking and taking drugs. I was in a very dark place and was an a—— to the people I love most, my family,' he wrote on Facebook. 'However, I am happy to say that I am now 44 days sober.'

Ozzy continued: 'Just to set the record straight, Sharon and I are not divorcing. I'm just trying to be a better person.'

May 2016: Ozzy and Sharon split after his affair
News broke on May 8, 2016 that Ozzy and Sharon broke up amidst rumors that he had an affair. Sources said at the time that Ozzy moved out of the couple's home, but they might get back together.

July 2016: Ozzy and Sharon get back together
Three months later, Ozzy and Sharon's marriage was back on.
On 'Good Morning America,' Ozzy called the separation a 'bump in the road' and said the marriage was 'back on track again.'
It was later revealed that Ozzy's affair was with his former hairstylist Michelle Pugh and lasted for four years. Sharon contemplated suicide when she learned of her husband's deception, but she took him back.

May 2017: Ozzy and Sharon renew their vows
After surviving the cheating scandal, Ozzy and Sharon renewed their wedding vows in Las Vegas on Mother's Day 2017.
'For me, this was actually our real wedding day,' Ozzy said in an interview afterwards. 'This is the one that I will remember. Sharon and I have been through so much, and this honestly feels like a new beginning.'
March 2021: Ozzy supports Sharon after her exit from 'The Talk'
Sharon left 'The Talk' on CBS in March 2021 for defending Piers Morgan's scathing criticism of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Oprah interview. Sharon got into a heated on-air fight with her co-host Sheryl Underwood, who suggested Sharon's defense of Morgan may itself be racist.
'I'll tell you, she is possibly the most unracist person I've ever met,' Ozzy said about his wife at the time. 'I'm not just saying that, you know?'

Feb. 2023: Sharon opens up about Ozzy's health issues
Since Ozzy revealed his Parkinson's diagnosis in 2020, Sharon has been open about her husband's health struggles.
After he canceled his tour in Feb. 2023, Sharon told The Sun: 'Ozzy says to me that he can't do anything as good as performing. I get heartbroken when I hear him say that and knowing he cannot go out and do what he is meant to do. But he will get there.'

A wheelchair-bound Ozzy performed his final show with Black Sabbath at Villa Park Stadium in Birmingham, England on July 5, less than three weeks before he died.
The gig featured additional performances by Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Slayer, Tool, Pantera, Gojira, Alice in Chains, Halestorm, Lamb of God, Anthrax, Mastodon and Rival Sons.
Sharon, who was at the concert, revealed she disinvited a band that wanted to make money off the event for her husband.

Broadway is in a bizarre uproar over the race of an actor playing a robot
Broadway has enjoyed a quiet, relaxing and peaceful summer. But show people can't have that! They always need, as Betty sang in the recently shuttered 'Boop! The Musical,' something to shout about. And their something has finally arrived in the form of a piping hot controversy at this year's Best Musical Tony Award winner, 'Maybe Happy Ending.' It's a doozy. Some members of the theater industry are hollerin' 'It's a scandal! It's a outrage!' over the race of an actor who's been cast to play — believe it or not — a robot. 'Maybe Happy Ending,' by the writing team of Hue Park and Will Aronson, is a sweet little science-fiction romantic-comedy that's set in Seoul, South Korea, during the year 2060. The main characters are Oliver and Claire, played by Darren Criss, who's half Filipino, and Helen J. Shen, who's Chinese. Oliver and Claire are robots. 5 There's a controversy brewing over at Broadway's 'Maybe Happy Ending.' Getty Images But the nuts-and-bolts duo have become defunct, so they embark on a quirky adventure to find Oliver's old owner. It's perhaps the nicest show to ever come to Broadway. Or it was. Until this latest fracas. The happiness dimmed when the wonderful, Tony-winning Criss's replacement was announced: actor Andrew Barth Feldman, the fantastic 'No Hard Feelings' star who's also Shen's boyfriend. He's white. Uh oh! In private, many on Broadway are largely OK with that. The most common refrain I've heard is: 'Well, they're robots.' But social media, as it does best, has poured gas on the fire. 5 Andrew Barth Feldman takes on the role of Oliver in September. WireImage Playwright and actor BD Wong, who was a strong voice in 1991 against British actor Jonathan Pryce playing the Eurasian Engineer in 'Miss Saigon' (Wong was absolutely right about that), wrote an essay slamming the choice. And the Asian American Performers Action Coalition came out against it, too. What do the creators have to say? They didn't write the roles to be culturally specific. Because they're robots! Robots don't have a culture. Well, except the Terminator, of course. He loves schnitzel and strudel. 5 'Maybe Happy Ending' won the Tony Award for Best Musical. Christopher Sadowski After the backlash, Aronson and Hue — kind and humble as it gets — explained on Instagram that they set out to create 'a modern 'Fantasticks,' able to be comfortably performed by anyone, anywhere — yet distinctly set in Korea.' Fair enough. Oliver and Claire, they said, are 'products created by a global company' who are 'ethnically undefined.' That makes a lot of sense. Because the characters are robots. The production said in a statement to the Times, 'We are proud to have created a show where every role can authentically be portrayed by an Asian actor, although the roles of the robots were not envisioned to always be cast that way.' 5 Darren Criss won a Tony for his performance. Aronson told the LA Times back in March that during an early workshop, the parts were taken on by Denée Benton, who's black, and Corey Cott, who's white. See? There's lots of flexibility when casting robots. Look, it's Hue and Aronson's show. They wrote it. Who's to tell them what they can and cannot do and what their intentions were? 5 'Maybe Happy Ending' is the rare musical about robots. (Although I've seen plenty of shows where it sure seemed like they were). It's an extremely unusual circumstance, and hardly one to draw broad conclusions from. In works about Asian humans, like the Imelda Marcos musical 'Here Lies Love,' something like this would never happen anymore. Feldman, who was nothing short of sublime in last season's 'We Had A World,' starts performing at the Belasco Theatre on Sept. 2. The uproar should die down well before that. And then fall on Broadway can resume being 'Happy.'

Louis Sachar meant to be a lawyer before writing 'Holes,' 'Sideways Stories from Wayside School'
Louis Sachar really intended to be a lawyer. But, in between starting law school at the Hastings College of Law in 1977 and graduating in 1980, he published his first book, 'Sideways Stories from Wayside School.' The zany, often surreal compendium of classroom antics went on to become a young adult classic, spawning a four-book series and a TV show. Advertisement 4 Louis Sachar, the acclaimed writer of young adult books, intended to be a lawyer. Alex Labry 'I kept thinking, 'Boy, I really need to get a law job,'' Sachar, 71, told The Post in his soft-spoken West Coast drawl. To date, 'Wayside' has sold over 15 million copies, according to Publishers Weekly, and it's never been out of print since it was first published in 1978, save for a brief period after the original Chicago-based publisher folded. While the debut is a clear fan favorite, the East Meadow, Long Island-native's most acclaimed book is 1998's 'Holes.' Advertisement The story of a boy who is wrongly accused of theft and sent to a juvenile detention center in Texas won a National Book Award and a Newbery Medal, and Sachar adapted it into a Disney movie that grossed over $70 million. Now the 71-year-old, who lives in Newport Beach, Calif., is attempting something new: his first novel for adults, 'The Magician of Tiger Castle,' out Aug. 5th. It's a Renaissance-era fantasy story starring a spunky princess named Tullia and her fatherly court magician, Anatole, who uses every trick he knows to help her escape a forced marriage. What gave you the idea for 'Sideways Stories from Wayside School'? I was going to college at Berkeley, I was a senior, and I just needed a course to take to fill out my schedule. There was this little girl standing in the middle of the Berkeley quad handing out sheets of paper saying 'Help, we need teacher's aids at our school! Earn 3 units of credit.' I thought, well, that sounds easy and could be fun. And I really had no interest about kids at that time, I was trying to get through college. It turned out I ended up being assigned to this 3rd grade classroom and I'd go for an hour every day and I just loved it. It became my favorite thing to do. Then I got hired to be what they called their noontime supervisor and the kids all called me 'Louis the Yard Teacher' [who is a character in 'Wayside.'] So I thought I'd try writing a children's book after I graduated college and left the school. I never thought I'd continue writing more. Advertisement 4 'Holes,' which is set in a juvenile detention facility, is Sachar's most acclaimed book. The Wayside School books are funny and light, but the subject matter of 'Holes' is more serious. What inspired that book? I had written, I think, 16 books by then, and they were all about kids in school, and I just didn't want to write about kids in school anymore. And I got the idea of kids in a juvenile correctional facility, and I thought, 'kids will love reading about that.' I had moved to Texas from San Francisco, which was a big change both in culture and temperature, and just trying to plant a bush in my backyard, just digging a hole was a lot of work. I guess that's where I got the idea that the kids are digging holes out in the heat. What did your daughter [Sherre, now 38], think of your books growing up? She always had conflicting feelings about my books because all her friends in school were fans of mine. Her friends would say, 'Oh, your dad is Louis Sacher.' And she always didn't know if they liked her for her or because I was her father. Or she would get good grades — I didn't know this at the time, I found it out later — when her teachers would tell her she was a good writer, she thought it was just because she was my daughter that they were telling her that. What made you want to write a book for adults at this stage of your career? 4 Sachar's 'Sideways Stories from Wayside School' spawned a four-book series and TV show. When I first started it, I thought it was going to be a young adult book. I figured it would teach young adults a little bit about the Renaissance. I chose Anatole as a sort of quirky narrator to tell that story. As I wrote and worked on it day after day, Anatole just kind of became the center of the story, and it's not a good idea to have a 40-year-old in the center of your book for young people. Advertisement Any fond memories of growing up in New York as a kid? My dad worked in the Empire State Building on the 87th floor. It was a real treat to go there. I remember him talking about how somebody, for like a $1 bet, sat on the ledge of the window. Somebody in his office sat there, legs dangling over the edge of the 87th floor. I thought, 'That's fun.'
